Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said: “It was a nice game of football – very intense. I’m very happy how we played, the quality and the effort. I think we deserved to win but of course, it was lucky to get a goal in the extra time. Coming from behind twice is very impressive. I’m very happy we turned things around but I didn’t expect anything else.
“We were very unlucky in the last two games but we were lucky today with very late goals to turn things around. Maybe it was exactly what we needed.
“It’s not easy to score two penalties in the same match. I was curious if he was going to take the second one as he could let Kai [Havertz] or Romelu [Lukaku] take it. But we believe in him, although it’s not easy. Full credit to him.”
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa said: “I think the fair result would have been a draw.
“Both teams played a beautiful game. For us to manage that they didn’t play well was very difficult, and to create danger against them, also.
“But, in a balanced way, we managed to achieve both things, which wasn’t enough for us to be better than them but we also could not be worse than them.
“I never give an opinion [on the penalties], whatever the referee decides is fine with me.”
2) LIVERPOOL v ASTON VILLA
Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty separates the teams on Steven Gerrard’s Anfield return with Aston Villa.
Player ratings
Liverpool Alisson (6), Alexander-Arnold (7), Van Dijk (7), Matip (6), Robertson (7), Fabinho (7), Oxlade-Chamberlain (6), Henderson (7), Thiago (7), Mane (6), Salah (8).
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “For 75 minutes we were outstanding. Then we go 1-0 up and the game opens up, let’s say it like this. They changed a little bit but we changed too much. We lose our rhythm and when you lose your rhythm in a game it is hard to get it back.”
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard: “The plan was to stay in the game for as long as we could. The idea was to get to 60 or 70 minutes and then throw things at them when the crowd got nervous and it opened up. The penalty changed that. I thought we were unfortunate.”
3) MAN CITY v WOLVES
Raheem Sterling reaches 100 Premier League goals with penalty in City win over Wolves; Raul Jimenez sent off for two bookings within 31 seconds; City have won seven on the trot and will end weekend on top of table; Wolves with no goal or win in four
Player ratings
Man City: Ederson (6), Cancelo (7), Dias (6), Laporte (6), Zinchenko (6), Rodri (6), Gundogan (6), Silva (6), Grealish (5), Sterling (7), Jesus (6)
Man City boss Pep Guardiola on BT Sport: “We were much better with 11 players and with 10 from Wolves. It is so difficult against a team who defend the way they defend.”
In post-match press conference: “Up against a team who didn’t want to play, didn’t want to attack. They defend so well and we deserved to get the win, we were by far the better team.”
Wolves boss Bruno Lage on BT Sport: “No penalty for me. That’s why it is very strange, the referee decision and the VAR decision. I protect VAR every time, it is very good for modern football. He put his arm out but where did it touch? Come on.”
On Jimenez’s red card: “He knows he cannot do that. I went into the dressing room and saw his face. But the first yellow, he didn’t touch the man and we have 10 men behind the ball. So it is a very hard decision and cost us a lot.
“We started the season like this. With that goal against Man Utd and a penalty against Tottenham – little things. I don’t want to talk about referees and VAR, but we need to go in the right direction because football is a beautiful game.”
4) ARSENAL v SOUTHAMPTON
Arsenal got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory against Southampton; Skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed out because of a disciplinary breach; Gunners put that to one side as goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Magalhaes secured win
Player ratings
Arsenal: Ramsdale (8), Tomiyasu (7), White (6), Gabriel (8), Tierney (7), Partey (7), Xhaka (6), Saka (7), Odegaard (7), Martinelli (8), Lacazette (7).
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta: “I’m very pleased. After a difficult period, we had two defeats where I don’t think we deserved to lose the games, but we did.
“We started the game a little bit nervy, you could tell that we were carrying that feeling still, but we finished strong.”
On the first goal: “It was [a ‘piece of art’] – that’s our identity, the way we want to play, it’s not possible to score all the goals like that. But that’s the direction we want to take.
“I am very happy. It’s a contribution from the whole game, what is required in every moment and then the execution and that’s what we’ve been lacking a little bit, because the intention is there, it’s just doing it more consistently.
“You could see that the team wanted to keep attacking, hit the post twice, a goal disallowed.”
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: “I think the signs before the game weren’t the best with players out with injuries. We tried in the beginning to be brave and play well. We concede in the first 15 minutes with their first chance. You could see the quality they had.
“We tried to score in the second half. But you can see the confidence they had after a second goal and a third goal. Overall, there was nothing to get for us today.
“I think the first goal was an easy goal how we conceded it. The other two were from headers. In the end, it was absolutely a deserved win for Arsenal. We have to pick up the points somewhere else.”
5) NORWICH v MAN UTD
Cristiano Ronaldo wins a penalty after being fouled by Max Aarons and dispatches it past Tim Krul; Norwich have a string of second-half chances, but fail to score; Ralf Rangnick remains unbeaten in the league since taking interim charge at Man Utd
Man Utd: De Gea (8), Dalot (6), Lindelof (6), Maguire (6), Telles (6), McTominay (7), Fred (6), Sancho (6), Fernandes (7), Rashford (6), Ronaldo (6).
Subs used: Greenwood (5), Bailly (6)Van de Beek (n/a).
Man of the match: David de Gea.
6) BRENTFORD v WATFORD
Bryan Mbeumo’s 95th-minute penalty gives Brentford late 2-1 victory over Watford; Emmanuel Dennis’ first-half header cancelled out by Pontus Jansson six minutes from time before last-gasp winner
Brentford head coach Thomas Frank: “We work so hard to try to achieve these moments. It was cruel against Leeds and this is the opposite. The feelings inside all of us are crazy, also the way the game went. Fantastic mentality from the players.
“I don’t think everything was fantastic today. I think in the first half we lacked decisive quality. We tried but it never came off. We talked in half-time that we needed more tempo, more energy, more presence.
“We knew if we kept going that maybe something would come. After we equalised, we never settled for a draw, we tried to go for the win, always, and that came off, which is fantastic.”
Watford head coach Claudio Ranieri: “It’s unbelievable because we were winning 1-0 and we had the chance to score the second goal and finish the match, but of course Brentford pushed a lot. At the end, we made three mistakes for the penalty. It’s unbelievable. We have to say Brentford deserved to win. Well done to them.
“We can learn but I wanted some points. We missed a lot of opportunities today and we know it was an important match but maybe the Brentford team were ready to do battle and some of my players no. Some yes, some no. We have to understand the Premier League is fight and quality. You have to be smart in every situation.”
