Subs: Salah (6), Fabinho (6), Thiago (6).
Man of the match: Naby Keita.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe: “I don’t think we quite got going. I thought we made a bright start to the game but we’re slightly disappointed with our own performance.
“Individually I don’t think we hit our top levels, which meant collectively we didn’t quite hit the levels we have recently. We probably didn’t quite have that sustained pressure we were looking for. The second half was better without that big chance ever really coming.
“There were one or two bright sparks, but it’s slightly disappointing compared to our previous levels. I’ve seen progress from where we have been, but on the other side there’s a lot of work to do.”
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: “I thought it was a top-class game in extremely difficult circumstances. Playing this kind of football.
“That’s why I’m really happy. You want to win football games and in the best case you deserve to win, and we did today 100 per cent against a team in great form in a great atmosphere.”
He added: “It was incredibly difficult for the boys today, to be honest, it’s clear. We played two and a half days ago.
“Coming here, a team in form, six home wins on the bounce, great weather, everybody in a good mood, pretty much everything was prepared for another home win.
“The only group who wanted to avoid that was my players. It was an outstanding football game, to be honest. In the circumstances, it was a top-class performance.”
On making five changes for the game: “I don’t think about the next game, but I know you cannot ignore that. My job is to use the squad when they are available and that’s what we do. Today we thought it was the right thing today because we needed legs in this game.”
2) LEEDS v MAN CITY
Rodri, Nathan Ake, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho goals give Manchester City a 4-0 win at Leeds as they return to the top of the Premier League table, above Liverpool; Leeds woes overshadowed when Stuart Dallas stretchered off before half-time
3) WATFORD v BURNLEY
Burnley complete devastating turnaround at Watford to boost their survival hopes and put more pressure on Everton.
Player ratings:
Watford: Foster (7), Louza (6), Pedro (7), Kamara (6), Sissoko (6), Femenia (6), Samir (6), Sarr (6), Dennis (6), Kabasele (6), Kucka (6).
Burnley: Pope (7), Taylor (7), Cork (7), Tarkowski (6), Brownhill (7), Weghorst (5), McNeil (7), Roberts (7), Lennon (6), Vydra (6), Collins (6).
Subs: Lowton (n/a), Barnes (6), Stephens (n/a)
Man of the match: Josh Brownhill
Watford assistant manager Ray Lewington: “You saw the fear factor that exists at this place. I don’t know why because the crowd were terrific today. It’s a consequence of losing so many games that I think with the finishing line in sight we started to get deeper and deeper, and you just can’t do that.
“You can’t play Russian Roulette trying to defend your penalty area, it’s impossible. We showed our naivety and as a consequence we lose two goals in the last 10 minutes. It’s just the fear factor, we’ve seen it so many times this year and this was probably the extreme today.
“Confidence was low when we got here. They were down the bottom and hadn’t won for a long time, you could see it. We tried to get them better organised and they have done better in games, but we’ve missed some chances that you can’t do in the Premier League and let in some sloppy goals. It’s not a great recipe. We’re playing for our pride now.”
Burnley caretaker manager Mike Jackson: “We improved from what we were doing in the first half. I don’t think we started the game as well as we could do. At half-time we spoke as a group saying we needed to do more, if everybody lifted it 15, 20 per cent we thought we could get back into the game.
“We knew they might be a little bit fragile in the second half. At this stage of the season it’s about finding a way to win games and I’m delighted with them again. They keep fighting, they keep working, they keep being honest and you’ll get your rewards in the end.
“I don’t know where it puts us, I don’t look at the table, that might sound a bit mad, but I don’t. We move onto the next game now.”
4) ASTON VILLA v NORWICH
Norwich are consigned to Championship football next season after suffering defeat at Villa Park while Burnley win at Watford
Player ratings
Aston Villa: Martínez (7), Digne (7), Mings (7), Chambers (6), Cash (6), Ramsey (7), Iroegbunam (6), McGinn (7), Coutinho (7), Bailey (6), Watkins (7).
Subs: Luiz (6), Buendía (7), Ings (7)
Norwich: Krul (6), Byram (5), Williams (6), Hanley (6), Aarons (5), Gilmour (6), Normann (6), Rashica (6), Lees-Melou (6), Dowell (6), Pukki (6).
Subs: Rupp (N/A), Sargent (N/A), Rowe (6)
Man of the match: Danny Ings
Norwich manager Dean Smith: “I’m disappointed because it wasn’t a performance we should have got relegated on. I thought it was a good performance. We quietened the crowd.
“They probably scored against the run of play – a ball over the top and a slip: Brandon slips and Ollie scores. Unfortunately, that’s cost us in an awful lot of games this season – little individual mistakes.
“I felt we should have had a penalty just after that and didn’t get one, but I don’t suppose I’ll get a phone call from Mike Riley.
“The Premier League is tough. I was at Aston Villa a couple of years ago and we got promoted and we spent £125m to try and stay in the league. The key to it, for me, is when you play against the teams in and around you, that you feel you are going to be competing with.
“In the big games, against [teams like] Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea, you try and scrap to get something out of those games where you can. We all know there is a gulf in quality between the top three and the rest of the league. Ultimately, we’ve come up short.
“We’ve got a great base to go with, good foundations. It’s a well-run football club. The last two times we’ve been in the Championship, we’ve won it. That’s what we have to aspire to again now. “
5) WOLVES v BRIGHTON
Brighton condemn Wolves to their fourth defeat in five matches; Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring from the spot, with Leandro Trossard doubling the lead before Yves Bissouma rounds off the scoring
Player ratings
Wolves: Sa (7), Semedo (6), Boly (5), Coady (5), Ait-Nouri (5), Dendoncker (5), Moutinho (6), Neves (6), Saiss (5), Hwang (6), Silva (6).
Brighton: Sanchez (7), Cucurella (7), Dunk (7), Veltman (7), March (7) Caicedo (7), Mac Allister (6), Mwepu (8), Bissouma (7), Trossard (7), Welbeck (8).
Man of the match: Danny Welbeck.
Wolves boss Bruno Lage: “When you come from this performance that we gave for the 90 minutes, there’s nothing much to say. We didn’t come to play, we just watched Brighton play.
6) SOUTHAMPTON v CRYSTAL PALACE
Crystal Palace come from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s; Oriol Romeu gives hosts lead with thumping header in first half; Eberechi Eze scores after the interval before substitute Wilfried Zaha secures the three points in stoppage time
Player ratings
Southampton: Forster (6), Walker-Peters (7), Salisu (6), Bednarek (5), Perraud (6), Romeu (7), Ward-Prowse (7), Redmond (6), Tella (6), Adams (6), Long (7).
Subs: Broja (6), S Armstrong (6), Elyounoussi (n/a).
Crystal Palace: Guaita (6), Clyne (7), Anderson (7), Guehi (6), Ward (6), McArthur (7), Gallagher (7), Schlupp (7), Eze (7), Ayew (7), Mateta (6).
Subs: Zaha (8), Olise (6), Hughes (n/a).
Man of the match: Wilfried Zaha.
Patrick Vieira said: “I really enjoyed it because going in 1-0 down at half-time, we didn’t deserve that, and we came back in the second half a bit quicker in our passing and we managed to score those two goals.
“The game against Leeds was in our legs, especially Wilfried, and the plan was for him to come on and I think it’s important for players to understand that we are a team and everyone has an important role to play.”
Vieira adding: “It was a long journey for Ebs and I’m really pleased for him because being out for seven months is really challenging.”
“When you see how we concede the first goal, how easily you give it away, we are in some positions at the moment lacking quality,” said Ralph Hasenhuttl.
“Not only for the players who have started, but also for the players that are coming on.
“Always when we are in the position to make this next step we fail, and maybe we fail because we are not good enough.”
