Match of the Day running order revealed

The Match of the Day running order has been revealed ahead of the programme, after what has been a busy and controversial afternoon.

You can see the highlights of all of those played so far along with all the talking points, replays and analysis from 10:35pm on BBC One.

Presenter Gary Lineker will as always be joined by pundits Danny Murphy, and Micah Richards, who no doubt will have a lot to rant about. If you miss the show, you can view it over on the BBC iPlayer.

Watford head coach Claudio Ranieri: “At the end of the match, we should have had more goals than West Ham, but they scored and we didn’t. We must help each other to find the right solution individually and also as a team. It’s not possible to continue this way.

“Sooner or later we’ll score goals, but we need to stop conceding goals.

“I don’t want to make excuses, but when you have the players for one day to prepare, it’s not easy as a mentality to get everyone to the same level. It’s a tough moment, not only for the moment but for the whole world. We have to improve ourselves, and we must do that without conceding goals. That’s the problem.”

West Ham manager David Moyes: “I’m demanding high levels of our players and I want that to show in how we play.

“We did it today in our goals, our play can be better and has been better, but we’ve got a toughness about us and today the biggest thing for me was to play a game 48 hours after the last one, be ready to go again and score four goals away from home.

“Watford have had Covid but they’ve had a period to recover too. A lot of teams would love a couple of weeks off, you wouldn’t want Covid, but it’s a chance to spread your games out.”

3) CRYSTAL PALACE v NORWICH

Goals from Odsonne Edouard, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jeffrey Schlupp punished hapless Canaries; Norwich will finish 2021 bottom of the Premier League table; Crystal Palace without Wilfried Zaha or Conor Gallagher

Player ratings

Crystal Palace: Guaita (7), Ward (7), Andersen (7), Guehi (7), Mitchell (7), Hughes (8), Kouyate (7), Schlupp (8), Ayew (7), Edouard (7), Mateta (7).

Subs used: Benteke (6), Tomkins (6)

Norwich: Gunn (6), Byram (5), Gibson (5), Sorensen (6), Giannoulis (5), Lees-Melou (6), Gilmour (6), McLean (5), Tzolis (6), Idah (5), Placheta (6).

Subs used: Rowe, (6), Sargent (6), Williams (6)

Man of the match: Jeffrey Schlupp

Crystal Palace assistant manager Osian Roberts: “It was a good day for us. Performance wise and result wise, it was really important for us today, but especially after the result on Sunday and then coming back to play at home.

“We made a good start to the game and we had good energy. The early goal sets us up nicely and the important thing is you build on that and don’t go flat. We managed to do that and it was an excellent first half from us.

“It was then a professional, disciplined performance in the second half to see us through.

“I’m not sure on Conor yet [for Saturday against West Ham], we’ll have to wait and see. There is a combination of injuries, Covid and suspension meaning players are out. At this point in time, I’m not in a position to be talking about individual players and disclosing any information that I’m not privy to anyway.

“Patrick is doing well. He’s delighted with the result, we’re in constant dialogue with a good communication strategy to make sure we’re able to follow his instructions during the game and throughout the week. We’re waiting day by day to see when he’ll be back at the training ground and at the helm.

“We’re working in a way where we’re not reliant on one or two players to be match-winners for us. It’s important that everybody contributes attacking wise and defensive wise. I’m delighted that the other players stepped up today, particularly JP Mateta who has been waiting patiently for his opportunity… The players stepping in today have done great for us again.”

Norwich head coach Dean Smith: “The result and the scoreline hurts. I didn’t think it a 3-0 if I’m honest, but the manner of the goals we conceded was poor.

“We conceded a soft penalty. Ken held his hands up, it might not be given in other circumstances. Does he make contact? Yes, but once he plants his foot, he doesn’t do enough to send the lad over. But I can understand why it was given so I’ve got no complaints.

“It was naivety in the box for the third goal. They take five or six touches without anybody getting anywhere close to them and Schlupp smashes it across Gunn.

“What we had when I first came in, I was quietly optimistic, but it’s been decimated at the moment and that’s where we were today… We’re lacking a lot of leaders in our group who unfortunately at the moment, are injured or ill.

“I said to the players at half-time, you need to go out and show some character and pride in the second half. I didn’t think the first half was a 3-0 first half, it was just the manner of goals that were disappointing and unfortunately, the result is the only thing people will talk about.

“Could we have scored a goal today? I think we could, we created more than enough chances than we have done in a lot of other days, but at the moment, we’re just falling short.”

4) SOUTHAMPTON v TOTTENHAM

Tottenham are frustrated at St Mary’s by 10-man Southampton; Harry Kane penalty cancels out James Ward-Prowse’s opener; Antonio Conte is the first Tottenham manager to go unbeaten in first seven league games in charge of the club

Player ratings

SouthamptonForster (6), Valery (8), Bednarek (8), Salisu (6), Walker-Peters (7), Perraud (6), Stuart Armstrong (6), Ward-Prowse (7), Diallo (7), Long (7), Adam Armstrong (6).

Subs:Redmond (n/a), Broja (6).

TottenhamLloris (6), Sanchez (6), Dier (6), Davies (6), Emerson (6), Winks (8), Hojbjerg (7), Reguilon (4), Alli (5), Kane (8), Son (7).

Subs:Doherty (6), Gil (n/a), Lucas Moura (6).

Man of the match:Harry Winks.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: “We had a little bit of luck with the long ball [for Kane’s disallowed goal], but we had some good moments offensively in the second half. Everything was working today. We played in this shape one time against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup so we knew what we needed to do.

“The lads were convinced and from the first minute, the lads put everything out onto the pitch. The lads are becoming more and more flexible as you never know what games are going to throw up.

“We’ve never spoken about the points we’ve dropped because we know we always start well. In a few weeks, I’ll be told we dropped two points against Tottenham but we see this differently. We took a point away to Man City so we’re super competitive and have young lads who are getting better.”

On the absence of Tino Livramento with a knee injury and Che Adams testing positive for Covid-19: “I hope it’s not so tough the injury [for Livramento] and I found out at 10pm last night that Che had tested positive. It required a few phone calls during the night. Unbelievable.

“They all knew they were playing on Friday as we set up two teams for the two games so they could prepare for it mentally. We were clear we had to play in this way, and I’m very happy it worked.

On Salisu’s red card and penalty incident: “We’re happy with the response from the players as we’ve told Sali that he doesn’t need to make the tackle and that he could leave it to the goalkeeper.”

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte: “They were very good and defended really well. The first phase wasn’t easy but at the same time, we can do much better and we can move the ball quicker and in one-v-one situations. To play after 44 hours is not easy for any team and I think I am seeing a bit of fatigue in my players.

“For this reason, we make some times not the right decision in the final pass or in our finishing. We can do much better but I know that it’s not easy to play 44 hours after the previous game.

“Harry scored twice – one a penalty and then the second goal but I don’t want to comment on the VAR decision. They are there to do their best.

“For sure [a missed opportunity], and you have to try to exploit this situation to try to get three points. We knew very well to play Southampton in this stadium is not easy. At one point in the game, a draw would’ve been a positive for us but we felt the fatigue and our mind wasn’t very clear to do the best of the situations.

“I tried to change things in the second half and I also took Reguilon off as he was on a yellow card and it was much better but we couldn’t find the solution for a second goal.”

5) NEWCASTLE v MAN UTD

Substitute Edinson Cavani cancelled out Allan Saint-Maximin’s first-half goal in an entertaining draw at St James’ Park that left both teams unable to move up the Premier League table

Player ratings

Newcastle: Dubravka (6), Manquillo (7), Schar (7), Lascelles (7), Krafth (8), Fraser (7), Shelvey (7), Sean Longstaff (7), Joelinton (9), Saint-Maximin (9), Wilson (7).

Subs: Murphy (7), Almiron (6), Gayle (6).

Man Utd: De Gea (7), Dalot (7), Varane (6), Maguire (5), Telles (6), McTominay (6), Fred (5), Fernandes (6), Rashford (5), Greenwood (5), Ronaldo (6).

Subs: Cavani (8), Sancho (6), Matic (6).

Man of the match: Joelinton

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe: “We’re disappointed, we felt we deserved to win. I don’t think we deserved to concede. How De Gea saved that shot from Almiron, I don’t know. But hopefully we’ve seen the beginning of a new team. But for a bit more luck, we could have won the game.”

Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick: “I did not like it at all. We were trying to get better at controlling games. Today we did not control the game, apart from very few moments, at all. It was all about energy, about physicality, and who wins the second balls. In all those areas we were not at our best today. In the end, we got a point, that is the good thing. But the overall performance has to get better.”
