Man of the match: Ivan Toney.
Leeds manager Jesse Marsch:
“I was calm even when Brentford were given the penalty, even though I didn’t see it right away but normally when the phrasing is ‘clear and obvious’ and it takes that long to watch it and look at it then, for me, it’s not clear and obvious.
2) NOTT’M FOREST v BOURNEMOUTH
Bournemouth score three second-half goals to beat Nottingham Forest and give Gary O’Neil his first win; Philip Billing, Dominic Solanke and Jaidon Anthony turned the game around after Forest had led through Cheikhou Kouyate and Brennan Johnson
Player ratings
Nottingham Forest: Henderson (5), N Williams (6), Worrall (6), S Cook (6), McKenna (5), Lodi (7), Yates (6), Kouyate (7), Lingard (5), Johnson (6), Gibbs-White (7).
Subs: Awoniyi (6), Colback (6), Dennis (n/a).

Subs: Fredericks (7), Anthony (7), Moore (n/a), Stacey (n/a).
Man of the match: Dominic Solanke.
Bournemouth interim head coach Gary O’Neil: “Just delighted for the boys really. We asked them at half-time to believe and go again. To respond at that point after the week they have had says everything about what this group is about.
“They are an incredible group – so committed, so relentless. They never know when they are done. Two games on the trot they have literally emptied the tank for me.
“Everyone at the club deserves it, everyone who has supported me over the last few days.
“They are delighted, they need a rest, as do I, they have been on a rollercoaster of a journey since this time last Saturday.”
Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper: “I didn’t see the second half coming. I thought we were very good in the first half, and good for the two-goal lead.
“The first goal, we didn’t defend well enough before the ball went in the net. That has then set the tone for the second half, and we’ve not managed that very well.
“The second goal was from a set-piece. We should do better.
“Then there was a mistake from Scott for the third goal. That’s the first time he’s put a foot wrong since I’ve been here.
“But let’s not hide away from the fact that we’ve thrown away a win. We’ve not done it in a very good way. We’ve conceded three goals at home, and there’s nothing good about that.”
3) CHELSEA v WEST HAM
Chelsea get back to winning ways thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell; West Ham furious after VAR denied Maxwel Cornet’s late equaliser for Jarrod Bowen’s challenge on Edouard Mendy; Chelsea up to fifth while West Ham languish in 17th
Player ratings
Chelsea: Mendy (4); Fofana (6), Silva (8), Koulibably (6); James (7), Gallagher (5), Kovacic (6), Cucurella (6); Loftus-Cheek (5), Sterling (6), Pulisic (6).

Subs: Cornet (7), Ogbonna (n/a), Benrahma (7).
Man of the match: Ben Chilwell.
“The goalkeeper comes to take it and fumbles it out of his hands,” said Moyes. “Then he acted as if it was a shoulder injury. I’m amazed that VAR sent the referee to the screen.
“I thought when I saw it, ‘Even if he goes to the TV, there’s no way he’s overturning this’. It was a ridiculously bad decision.
“I think I question VAR today as much as the referee. The referee should have stuck to his own guns and been big enough to do what he said.
“I’ve had a chance to look at three or four angles, which they have, so there is no excuse for VAR. Today there is no excuse for that not to be a goal, none whatsoever.
“The sad thing is that this is the level of our elite refereeing at the moment. The goalkeeper tried to do the same thing with the first goal as well, he tried to fake an injury for the first goal as well.
“They’ve got new people in charge. I’ve lost faith in them today.”
4) TOTTENHAM v FULHAM
Tottenham beat Fulham 2-1; Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane scored as Spurs dominated but Aleksandar Mitrovic pulled one back with his sixth goal of the campaign in the closing stages
Spurs boss Antonio Conte:
“For sure, I liked the performance. If I have to find a situation that we need to improve, it is to be clinical because when you create so many chances, you have to score. We scored, but the goals were disallowed and we hit the bar.
“I loved to see my players play the ball with personality and to see the three strikers working very hard for the team with the ball and without the ball. They give us a lot of quality and a lot of danger for the opponent.
“When I see this type of performance from my players, [Heung-Min] Son included, I’m not worried, I know that these strikers are going to score many goals.
“It’s important to have great enthusiasm and to be excited for the team but at the same time, I have to be realistic.
Player ratings
Tottenham: Lloris (7), Romero (7), Dier (7), Lenglet (7), Emerson Royal (7), Bentancur (7), Hojbjerg (8), Sessegnon (8), Richarlison (8), Son (7), Kane (8).
Subs: Kulusevski (6), Perisic (6).
Fulham: Leno (8), Tete (7), Adarabioyo (7), Ream (7), Robinson (6), Palhinha (6), Reed (6), Pereira (6), De Cordova-Reid (6), Kebano (6), Mitrovic (8).
Subs: Mbabu (6), James (6), Cairney (6), Willian (6), Vinicius (6).
Man of the match: Richarlison
Spurs boss Antonio Conte:
“For sure, I liked the performance. If I have to find a situation that we need to improve, it is to be clinical because when you create so many chances, you have to score. We scored, but the goals were disallowed and we hit the bar.
5) ASTON VILLA v MAN CITY
Manchester City missed the chance to go top of the Premier League; Erling Haaland gave the visitors the lead with his 10th goal in six games; Aston Villa equalised through Leon Bailey to avoid a fourth consecutive league defeat
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: “Good game. We conceded just one goal from one shot on target in 90 minutes. We were not precise in our final third touches and our simple things, especially in the first half. We had chances to score a second when the game was in our hands but we didn’t.
“We were better after the goal. But we were just not precise enough in the crosses, we missed a few situations and that’s why we could not score.
“They [Villa] defended well, they are well organised and physical. The way we defended we created enough chances to score goals, we defended well apart from one action.
“[Kyle] Walker injured, he asked to be substituted. I don’t know why.”
On season so far: “Many games to play – it’s always tough, every game is tough home and away, we know this.”
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard speaking to Sky Sports: “Very proud – the players have come together today. They put an incredible amount of effort into the game, followed instructions. City are always going to have moments and we had to ride our luck, this is what we wanted out of the game and this is the game plan we gave them.
“Sometimes you’ve got to put more legs in the team, sacrifice certain technical levels, you have to take some space away and people in the team who can gain the ball and move forward with speed. We went with Leon [Bailey] and [Jacob] Ramsey because we felt we would have areas to break into, we did it better in the second half but we wanted to be more organised because of [Erling] Haaland and others capable of finding space.
“We praised the players after the first half for out of possession stuff but said we need to be more aggressive on the regain and believe in ourselves more but to concede against City and the players didn’t sink I was really happy with the response and the body language.”
What happened with the Coutinho goal? “I saw a legitimate goal but obviously I am biased. The referee did the same at the other end with [Ezri] Konsa on the keeper, he was desperate on the whistle which went against us twice in the game.”
6) WOLVES v SOUTHAMPTON
Wolves beat Southampton to claim first Premier League win since April; Daniel Podence scored only goal of the game when he scuffed a shot past Gavin Bazunu from Matheus Nunes’ cross; Southampton managed just one shot on target in underwhelming performance
Player ratings
Wolves: Sa (5), Jonny (6), Collins (7), Kilman (6), Ait-Nouri (7), Nunes (8), Neves (6), Moutinho (6), Neto (6), Kalajdzic (5), Podence (7)
Subs: Guedes (5), Traore (N/A), Hwang (N/A)
Southampton: Bazunu (6), Walker-Peters (7), Bella-Kotchap (7), Salisu (7), Perraud (6), Ward-Prowse (6), Diallo (6), Elyounoussi (6), Aribo (6), A. Armstrong (6), Adams (5)
Subs: S. Armstrong (6), Djenepo (5), Edozie (7), Maitland-Niles (6), Mara (N/A)
Man of the match: Matheus Nunes
Wolves manager Bruno Lage, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “It’s important for us, but the most important is what we are doing in each moment. Players are arriving, we don’t have time to train and have to put them straight into the games. We try our best to have our best strategy and they’re performing well.
“We scored one goal and after that we were very brave in the way we defended. We’re very happy. I told the players it’s one win, we have to build on it. We need to practice. The team that finished pre-season and the team we have now are so different.
“I had a feeling when the fans started singing at the start about ‘Bruno Lage ball’. I told the players we have to go outside and give everything. The big attitude and the big energy comes from the fans. That’s why I was there at the end of the game to take all the support from them.”
On Sasa Kalajdzic’s half-time withdrawal: “He felt something. Nothing special, but we went with Guedes.
On Raul Jimenez’s injury in the warm-up: “With Raul it is normal fatigue. He didn’t do pre-season and played straight away. With a good pre-season, he’d be able to play without problems, but not without pre-season. Today it was impossible for him to run – chronic fatigue. Because of that we started with Sasa.”
7) EVERTON v LIVERPOOL
Everton produce a battling display to frustrate Liverpool in 242nd Merseyside derby; Jordan Pickford and Alisson both shine in stalemate as Conor Coady sees close-range strike disallowed following VAR review for offside
Player ratings
Everton: Pickford (8), Patterson (7), Coady (7), Tarkowski (7), Mykolenko (7), Davies (7), Onana (7), Iwobi (7), Maupay (7), Gray (6), Gordon (7).
Subs: McNeil (6), Gueye (6).
Liverpool: Alisson (8), Alexander-Arnold (6), Gomez (7), van Dijk (7), Tsimikas (7), Elliott (6), Fabinho (7), Carvalho (6), Salah (6), Nunez (7), Diaz (6).
Subs: Milner (6), Firmino (7), Jota (n/a), Robertson (6), Matip (n/a).
Man of the match: Jordan Pickford.
Lampard was delighted with Pickford’s display, saying: “He was absolutely superb – especially the save in the first half from Darwin Nunez. We had been as comfortable as you could possibly be against Liverpool up to that point in the first half.
“He gets his fingertips to that and then in the second half he makes a string of saves that were of a world-class level. He did it for us in the back end of last season. He gets scrutiny because he’s England’s number one and I understand that.
“But when you deliver like he did today, everyone understands why he’s England’s number one and why we appreciate him so much here.”
8) NEWCASTLE v CRYSTAL PALACE
Newcastle see Tyrick Mitchell’s own-goal ruled out by VAR for foul by Joe Willock on Vicente Guaita; Newcastle had 22 shots to Palace’s 19 but neither side could find the net at St James’ Park
Player ratings:
Newcastle: Pope (8), Trippier (7), Botman (7), Schar (7), Joelinton (7), Targett (7), Isak (7), Fraser (6), Almiron (7), Willock (6), Longstaff (6).
Subs: Wood (n/a), Murphy (6), Anderson (6), Burn (n/a).
Crystal Palace: Guaita (8), Ward (6), Mitchell (6), Guehi (7), Ayew (6), Eze (6), Zaha (6), Mateta (6), Schlupp (6), Andersen (6), Doucoure (6).
Subs: Olise (6), Clyne (6), Edouard (6).
Man of the match: Vincente Guaita
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe: “It was one of those games for us where we performed really well. Lots of aspects of our performance were very good, we created chances in all phases of our play – build-up, counter-attacking, set-plays – we just couldn’t get that final bit of quality just to seal our good work. It wasn’t to be today.
“Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves that I can recall. I’m not sure it was a day for defenders because it was quite an open game, it was a tough physical challenge for us today off the back of playing on Wednesday and the game at Anfield was incredibly tough physically.
“To go again today in the level we did was hugely promising. The players emptied the tanks and gave everything physically, it was a very good performance.”
