SWANSEA v WREXHAM
Simeon: Swansea beaten at Stoke last time out, ending their mini upturn under Vitor Matos. They’d won their last two games before that. And Wrexham fought back to hold Watford last Saturday. No wins in four for them now. And they’ve drifted back into the bottom half of the table, Wrexham. But yeah, this, this should be a big, a big fight again between two teams who last met in 2003.
David: Yes. Last met in the league in that space of time, 22 years. So it’s a huge one. Back-to-back wins for Matos against, what was it, Oxford and Pompey? I think there’s been, it’s been slightly misleading given the fact there was a change made, wasn’t it, at Swansea. But I don’t think it’s had a huge fundamental effect so far on where their season’s going. And Wrexham absolutely ducks to water to this Championship lark, aren’t they? And it’s been a joy to watch them. So I think this is huge. I think if you’re not au fait with this particular matchup, then you won’t really understand the rivalry, but I’ve got a feeling this is going to be an absolute corker.
Simeon: Two teams a long way apart. We saw Cardiff and Wrexham meet at the Carabao a few weeks back and you, you saw the sense of Animosity. North Wales and South Wales, there is a it’s a historic rivalry. I think Ben Tozer was explaining to me why it was so important. Lots, lots of reasons that are very, very important in, in Wales that I’ve, I’ve now forgotten, but lots of, you know… Yeah. I clearly took a lot of it. And that’s, that’s no reflection on Ben. That’s more reflection on how my brain works and retains information.
David: I presume it would be obviously geographical. I presume it’d be political. I presume it’d be economical as well. It’ll be all the things that go into making a rivalry what it is.
Simeon: First league meeting, as I’ve said, between these two sides since 2003, that was in the old division three. Swansea have just two points from their last nine games against Wrexham. And they haven’t beaten them since August, 1993 in the old division two. Their last second tier meeting was in 1981. And that was in the old, old division two. What’s the score going to be at the swansea.com stadium on Friday night?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Wrexham win

SOUTHAMPTON v COVENTRY
Simeon: Southampton somewhat contentiously, well very contentiously, beating the Norwich last week. Find themselves four points off the playoffs heading into the weekend. Coventry, big return to winning ways, well it’s a small return to winning ways in that they beat Bristol City 1-0, but it was a big return to winning ways in terms of how important it was in terms of results. They ahead into the weekend, five clear of Middlesbrough in second and 12 clear of Preston in third. It’s a remarkable position to find themselves in. But let’s start Southampton at Norwich last week. We caught a bit of flak perhaps because we kind of basically said Norwich don’t have a chance here and then they went and won. What we will say in response to that is it did take a missed penalty and Jovon Makama punching in the winner for them to lose this game. But yeah, Southampton, something to prove again going into this one and obviously they’ll want to put a marker down against Coventry as well perhaps.
David: Yeah, I think given what we saw from Southampton, I absolutely take what you’re saying about the missed penalty and the handball goal, but they were better than they have been consistently for a while. Norwich, I think a team that hadn’t done so well at home even though they were unbeaten in two coming off the back of a win at home, hadn’t broadly done very good at home up against a side that’s been free-scoring under Tonda Eckert. You kind of presume that might go the way of the form guard, it didn’t. And I think Norwich, as the Southampton boss said, were well worthy of the three points even though there was a bit of kind of consternation during the course of the game. So yeah, there’ll be a reaction needed, but I think from what we saw with Coventry, that slight bit of fallibility, I mean nobody thought they were going to go through the division all season just smashing teams to bits and scoring at will, and there’s always going to be a little tough period. I’m not saying it’s stretched on for any longer, nor has it caused them undue concern given how good Frank has been leading the team, but it’s a cracker of a game and possibly you’d look at that second half from Southampton and say that creative side of it wasn’t quite there, unfortunately, and there were whispers of it or suggestions of it in the game during the course of the week against West Brom where second half they could have let it go against the Baggies. So I would say Tonda’s going to take this as a warning sign and have them back to it at the weekend.
Simeon: Southampton have won all four games at home under Tonda Eckert and scored 12 goals in that time, so that’s an ominous sign for Coventry. Southampton are also unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions against Coventry, winning five of those. Coventry’s last win against Southampton came in 2008 in a game you surprisingly weren’t playing in, it feels like kind of era you would have been playing for one of those two teams, but you probably would have been in Leeds at that point, wouldn’t you?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2 draw

BLACKBURN v MILLWALL
Simeon: Blackburn, no wins in five now, start the weekend three points above the bottom three, albeit with a game in hand. Millwall, fourth heading into the weekend, although they were beaten at home by Hull City last weekend. So both sides with something to prove at Ewood Park here.
David: Yeah, I mean…
Simeon: As always for every team in the Championship every week to be fair, but you know, we’ve got to find slightly different ways to hype up 558 games a season, so here we are.
David: And I suppose as well, saying Millwall have got something to prove, sat fourth.
Simeon: After a humbling home defeat by Hull City.
David: Who was sixth. So yeah, I mean, that’s that huge upset for the coupon.
Simeon: Wasn’t quite a coupon buster, but you know.
David: Yeah, the Blackburn one’s quite intriguing because the season of fits and starts has given way to where they find themselves, because that perception at one stage that they’d kind of turned a bit of a corner with the form has been well and truly put to bed, given where they find themselves. Millwall have been fantastic. I think Hull City have got it in them to really surprise people, given the fact that the week before they weren’t so good and then they went and did that against Millwall. So there’s plenty of jeopardy in those top six spots. I just fancy Millwall on the road. They were good early season away from the new den, weren’t they? And I’ve got a feeling that this could be a pretty fruitful trip for them from South East London.
Simeon: I was quite surprised when I saw Blackburn no wins in five, because as you mentioned, I did feel like they had turned a corner in my head. They had turned a corner and it feels like they’ve turned back around that corner and start going the other way again.
David: They’ve gone around the other corner. In fact, they’ve gone around the block.
Simeon: Blackburn are unbeaten in their last nine home league games against Millwall. They haven’t lost to them since November 2012.
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-0 Millwall win

PRESTON v NORWICH
Simeon: Preston third in the table after beating Oxford, seven behind Middlesbrough in second heading into the weekend. Norwich, big win over Southampton last Saturday. We’ve already somewhat micro-analysed. They’re still three adrift of safety, however, heading to Deepdale. Let’s start with Preston. Really, really good shape, Preston, where they are at the moment. Obviously a bit adrift of the top two, but third is just at this stage of the season. It’s pretty remarkable.
David: Amazing. The top six has really got a really eclectic makeup, hasn’t it? Which has been great. And I think what Paul’s doing there with the team that he’s got, especially of course at Deepdale, given how good they’ve been, means that it’s a tough place for anyone to go. So it’s one where they go into it statistically, given where they both find themselves in the table with, I would say, the favouritism being on Preston North End.
Simeon: Norwich, you’ve seen enough from them in recent weeks to suggest they can get out of the situation they’re in. I feel like there’s a lot more optimism now than there was a few weeks ago, particularly after the result last week. Which, as we said, as you said, we kind of jested about how it came about, but they were worthy of the win, even though it did come about in the way it did against Southampton. And Tonda Eckert did say that as well.
David: Yeah, and Philippe Clement has talked about how he wants to turn them into a winning machine. Time will tell whether that will be the case. But I think there’s big clubs down there. I mean, bless em, you look at Sheffield Wednesday and the absolutely horrendous position that they found themselves in. But I think the rest of it’s pretty tight. Like I said, like we said, Norwich have got enough, but I’ve seen the teams in and around there showing that they’ve got enough to be out of it. It’s quite obviously it’s going to be a classic bun fight. So yeah, signs of optimism, but still very much in trouble.
Simeon: Optimism as well for Norwich because they’ve got a good record at Deepdale. They have lost just one of their last eight away league games against Preston and are unbeaten in four since February 2019.
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Preston win

David Prutton’s score prediction: Boro to win 2-1.
CHARLTON v OXFORD

DERBY v PORTSMOUTH
