Sky Sports duo Simeon Gholam and David Prutton gave a preview heading into the next game of the regular season, predicting the results of every fixture; listen to the podcast below or via any of your regular podcast providers.
LEEDS v SHEFFIELD UNITED
Simeon: Leeds somehow held at Sunderland last time out. I’m sure Illan Meslier will have been dwelling on it as much as anyone, and he’ll be desperate for this game to come around. Sheffield United, of course, as we just talked about, will be paying tribute to George. Their next 2 games are away from home, then they’re back at Bramall Lane next weekend. But for now, in terms of football, at least they are unbeaten. Can that run continue into a 10th game on Friday night?
Prutton: Cracking game in the off, ain’t it, to get the champ back up and running? As you say, it’s feeling it’s been ages. Plenty of time for Leeds to stew on that. Plenty of time for Sheffield United, of course, to concentrate on that on that unbeaten run and and and quite obviously tempered with that horrendous news about George Baldock. So it’s I’m hoping this game becomes something that the result potentially, not irrelevant but not important. The approach by everyone involved in this hopefully is absolutely in the right manner. You’ll have 2 teams going absolutely at it, attacking the game like George Baldock that would attack a football match. And I sincerely hope that both sets of fans get stuck into what that is and if that offers them 90 minutes away from thinking about, how luckily devastated things have been, then it it offers that little bit of miniature salvation. You’ve got a team that’s unbeaten. You’ve got a team that’s got a wonderful defensive record, and you’ve got a team in Leeds United that were so close to being, right near the top of the league come the international break, but for that mistake by Meslier. So, it’s set up to be a cracker. Any game that’s, Elland Road, under the lights, especially on a Friday night, is is wonderful. Memories of last season where they played Leicester and weren’t good, were they, for 60 minutes, 70 minutes, but won and then they were singing all the way around at the end, and it was just the most wonderful atmosphere. So, atmospherically, I hope it lives up to the billing, and the kind of football, as we said, in the image of a man that we’re all gonna miss. Played in a way where for 90 minutes, it’s football that really does matter. Before and after, we know it doesn’t, but 2 teams giving it a role.
Simeon: This is a chance for both teams to go top the table for at least to head in to the rest of the weekend, Leeds would need to win by 3 goals. Sheffield United just need a point. Our Leeds fan, Noah, says, Sheffield United are a big job of this game, so we’ll need to perform. Leeds had a good start, but as Sheffield United are unbeaten, they may well be types of contenders. We’ll snatch a goal back near the end, and I’m thinking 2-2. Leaves aren’t beaten in each of their last 15 Yorkshire Derbies in the Leeds since a 2 nil home loss to Sheffield Wednesday in January 2020. It’s the White’s longest ever such run against their Yorkshire rivals. What’s the score going to be?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2

OXFORD v WEST BROM
Simeon: Oxford, another of those sides in this league, brilliant AT home, not so good away. 10 of their 12 points so far when picked up at the Kassam. Although, they all got a win in 4, in all games home and away in the Championship. West Brom, no wins in 3, no goals in their last 2. They are struggling in that regard, and this is a tough trip for them as they try and reclaim some form after the break.
Prutton: Yes. They were top of the table and and looking pretty comfortable, weren’t they? Which just goes to show the wonderful nature of the Champ, you get a week where things don’t quite go according to plan, and then everyone’s asking questions. So currently sitting 4th with an Oxford side, you mentioned, obviously, that run of 4 away from home and then the recent run of 4 both home and away. But 10th so far has been I think it’s been a tremendous return. So much like what what Des Buckingham’s done with that side. Obviously, we mentioned, Liam Manning and the kind of foundations that he’s put in, and how that’s kinda progressed. But they’ve they’ve been a brilliant addition to the Championship. Was it first time, the second tier for best part of 30 years? I must have said that so many times over the course of years.
Simeon: 1999.
Prutton: So it’s been a joy to see them back. So, really, you’ve got West Brom side going to a team that, as we’ve seen, can do good things at home the opening day of the season against Norwich City, of course. They were great. Just it’s definitely one of the cars that’s gotta be wary of. I’ve just got the feeling we take away the sense of the international players, but sometimes in an international break, if you’re not in that kind of setup where you are playing internationally, there’s a there’s depending on the manager, you get a a block of time off. Carlos Corberan, as a striker, is the type of fellow that said to the West Brom fans, Have a week off, lad. Say a little bit. I think they would have been worked and worked and worked and drilled, and you’re gonna see a reaction from a 3 game winless run.
Simeon: 2 very contrasting Oxford fans for you. Our Oxford fan, TJ says, I have full faith in Des Buckingham. What’s an amazing manager and a great squad he has. We’ll be at the Kas Stad. True yellows will know why we call it that. I don’t know why they call it that. So if someone could tweet me or Instagram me and let me know, that’d be great. Watching some great football. I’ll say 2-1 Oxford United win. Our more negative Oxford band, Cam says expecting a bit of a pasting this weekend. Damage control, maybe still, we’re at home, so that’s a positive. Not sure on the score. He hasn’t given us a score, so based on this prediction, I’m gonna predict it for you. Can you confirm a 4-0 West Brom win? This is the 1st league meeting between these two sides since March 1999.
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 West Brom
CARDIFF v PLYMOUTH
Simeon: Cardiff, still without a permanent manager as we record this in the middle of the week. Feel like they’ve wasted a good chunk of the international break on that. They might have a manager by Saturday. Who knows? We don’t really, can’t tell the future. Riza is still in interim charge. He’s picked up a win and a draw so far. Plymouth, just a point on the road all season, something that certainly needs to improve under Wayne Rooney, but they have been so good at home lately. They almost doesn’t matter. Important game for both this, you feel, for different reasons. Well, the same reason they both wanna try and win, but you know what I mean.
Prutton: For different reasons. What one doesn’t wanna win, one doesn’t wanna win. Yeah. That there’s a there’s a real stark contrast, isn’t it, with regards to what we’re seeing from Plymouth on the road. Losing away at West Brom, winning at home against Luton, losing away against Burnley, winning at home against Blackburn. So Wayne will know there’s something that needs to be remedied there, albeit potentially from the stands. Will he be? I presume, from…
Simeon: Got sent off last time, didn’t he?
Prutton: Me knowing what it’s like to get sent off as a player means you’re you’ve gotta get away from the pitch and in the, dressing room. And I presume for manager, you’ve gotta get away and in your, office, but he quite gleefully stated that he saw the winner from the tunnel. I don’t get anyone into trouble, but I know it’s Wayne Rooney, but you still once you’re off, you’ve gotta go off. So yeah. They are so good at home and the atmosphere down there. I’ve been playing down there a very long time ago. It was always it was always a boisterous place to go, but he’s got it rocking like we’ve not seen in a very long time. So fair play to him. And for Cardiff, Severside Derby coming away with a draw. Millwall after that win against, Millwall, which is absolutely much needed, but still, as you’re saying, 3 points adrift. They need to sort out who’s in charge moving forward, but it won’t be an easy game against Plymouth.
Simeon: Our Plymouth Argyle fan, Ross, says this weekend is an excellent opportunity for a rare away win. I’m cautious though as Cardiff has shown improvement over the last couple of games, and we have been terrible on the road ever since promotion. I think we can edge this one, though, and he’s got a 2-1 Argyle win. Plymouth are looking to win consecutive league games against Cardiff for the first time since September 1993. What’s the score going to be at the Cardiff City Stadium?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1

LUTON v WATFORD
Simeon: Luton are 21st in the table. Watford are 6th. Not many would have predicted that a couple of months ago, I don’t think. So it’s a big game miss for both obvious reasons and all the other reasons. And the fact they both wanna win and try to sell it as any other reason on the fact that it’s another game which both teams wanna win, and they don’t like each other very much.
Prutton: Yes. Big the bigger question mark, of course, around Luton and and the direction that they’re going currently, point above the bottom 3. They found it tough readjusting to life back in the Championship, but this is I hope there’s a bit of perspective used in this because the Luton team that climbed out the Championship way overshot its expectations. Now it’s a former Premier League team. The straight line is they must be up their challenging, but it’s not as straightforward as that. With what Tom’s doing with Watford, yeah, lots to like about that. They’ll go into this. Boyd off the back of getting back to winning ways against Boro. Obviously, they’ll bear in mind games, the likes against, Preston and and Norwich, on the road. So, I’m looking forward to this one.
Simeon: Our Luton fan, Samuel says, Luton have had a poor start to the season, and Watford seemed to be on form so far this season with Tom Cleverley taking charge. Says, come on, you Hatters, and then predicts a 3-1 Watford win. Our Watford fan, Nick the Hornet says, it’s a big one against that lot up the M1. Luton obviously had a poor start, but our away form has been dreadful as well. And I will go for a 1-1 draw. So no one predicting a Luton win. Watford have lost the last 2 away league visits to Luton without scoring a goal in the process? What’s the score going to be at the Kenilworth Road?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2
PRESTON v COVENTRY
Simeon: Preston had a decent result last time out before the international breakers. They held Burnley to a goalless draw at their place. They’re still 19th in the table. However, heading into this one, one point and a place above Coventry. However, they were beaten at home by Sheffield Wednesday last time out. They just cannot get going, can they?
Prutton: No. And you’re gonna feel for Preston. They had a perfectly good goal rolled out against, Burnley in a game that hasn’t lived long in the memory. Thank god. There is, I mean, we saw, Paul Heckingbottom go in. There was a, corner turned, and then there was that kind of, follow period before winning, against Watford and then that big point against Burnley. So I think they’re generally moving in the right direction. Again, it’s perception, isn’t it? Because of where they were and the fact that they’ve planned a little bit, we said they’re going in the right direction for Coventry. I think you’re absolutely right. Almost a bit of treading water, one step forward and and potentially one and a half steps back. So there’s been a change in personnel, not just on the pitch, but in the dugout as well, of course, for Coventry. So maybe there’s a bit of teething problems there.
Simeon: So, our Coventry fan who refers to himself as LFC fan, says, I honestly think he’s a season holder for Coventry, and I’ve seen their bad performances at home. So I think this will be a draw against Preston. He’s got a 1-1 draw. Only Derby and Plymouth have won fewer points away in the championship this season than Coventry City, who are winless in 7 on the road. What’s the score going to be?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-0 Preston

HULL v SUNDERLAND
Simeon: Hull had shown some really positive signs with 3 wins on the against Stoke, Cardiff, and QPR, scoring 10 goals, then they got tonked at Norwich just before the international break. Sunderland bundled their way to draw against leads before the break. We talked about that a lot at the top of the show. We don’t have to do that again. They start the weekend at top of the table, but it is unlikely they will be there by kickoff unless a lot of things go their way. This should be a fun game. 2 attacking sides who really go at it.
Prutton: Yeah. There will be. It’s a game I’m really looking forward to. Hull were great, of course, for 3 games on the bounce then got chastened, shall we say, by Norwich. Sunderland, that I mean, the point out of absolutely I mean, almost literally nowhere, it could be something that could be, of great magnitude coming into the season. So it’s an intriguing Sunday dust up between these 2 very likeable sides, 2 managers that are brand new, of course, to the Championship, and one’s doing spectacularly well. One’s doing well. So I know it’s what it’s well balanced this one.
Simeon: Finlay Anderson, our Sunderland fan. It says, I think most Sunderland fans are still not over that remarkable equaliser against Leeds before the break, and it keeps a sense of optimism intact. Just a sense of optimism from the top of the league. Our away form in September wasn’t the best losing 2, but I think we can pick up 3 points here and he’s gone for a 2 nil Sunderland win. Sunderland are unbeaten in 6 league visits to Hull since losing 1 nil in November 2013 under Gus Poyet. What is the score going to be at the MKM Stadium on Sunday?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1

BLACKBURN v SWANSEA
Simeon: The rest of the Saturday 3 PMs now, we’ll start with Blackburn Rovers versus Swansea City. Swansea won 1 nil at Ewood Park in the Championship last season. They have never won consecutive way league games there. What’s the score going to be at Ewood Park? Blackburn to win too well.
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Blackburn
MIDDLESBROUGH v BRISTOL CITY
Simeon: Middlesbrough versus Bristol City. Middlesbrough are with us in the last five league games against Bristol City since a 2-1 win back in August 2021. What’s the score going to be the Riverside Stadium?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1
MILLWALL v DERBY
Simeon: Millwall versus Derby County, Our Millwall fan, ‘Millwall on top’, says Millwall will win 3-1 because Millwall are the best after Millwall.
Prutton: Wow. I mean, if he’s older than 11, I’ll be I’ll be amazed with that.
Simeon: Our Derby fan, Derby1234 says, I think Darby gonna win this weekend and get out away record up in his home for a 1 nil Rams win. Millwas are winless in their last 3 home league games against Darby since the 2 one win in August 2018. What’s the score at the Den?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-0 Millwall
QPR v PORTSMOUTH
Simeon: Queens Park Rangers versus Portsmouth. Our QPR fan Hayden says after not the best of results the past few games for either side, I do reckon we will get 3 points. It’s going to be 3-1. Pompey are winless in their last 12 away league visits to QPR. Haven’t won there since September 1961. What’s the score then to be?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-0 Portsmouth
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY v BURNLEY
Simeon: Burnley fan E Franklin says, I think we will start shaking concede first, then get a good few goals from Koleosho, Brownhill, and Hannibal, and he’s gone for 3-1 Burnley win. Burnley have lost only 2 in the last 13 league meetings with Sheffield Wednesday which both came in one season in 2008-09. What’s the score, to be at Hillsborough?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2
STOKE v NORWICH
Simeon: Stoke City versus Norwich City. Our Norwich fan Theo says Norwich have had a good run of form, hoping the international break hasn’t affected it. Also, away from home, we can be a bit shaky, and Stoke shouldn’t be underestimated at the bet365 stadium. And it should be a good game. He’s one for a 3-1 Norwich win with Sainz to score twice, and Josh Sargent score 1. Stoke are winless in their last seven league games against Norwich City since a 1-0 away win in October 2018. What’s the score going to be at the bet 365 stadium?
David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Norwich
