WEST BROM v MILLWALL

Simeon: West Brom have pulled four points clear of the bottom three. They’ve been on a decent run of picking up points under James Morrison. Millwall, an up-and-down Easter weekend. They obviously beat Middlesbrough in emphatic fashion on the Friday and then lost it home to Norwich on the Monday. Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Millwall perhaps all head into the weekend on 72 points. But Ipswich have two games at hand and a better goal difference. Yes. Than the sides below them. So they’re very much in pole position. But Millwall will get back to second place at least overnight with a point or three here. But obviously coming up against the West Brom side who are in pretty decent nick at the moment.

David: Well, they needed to, didn’t they? Get themselves pulled away from or attempted to beat obviously Valley Undersea to be away from the danger zone. Intrigued to see what Millwall’s reaction will be given a great good Friday and then disappointment that came with playing the Norwich side. I mean, I’m sure we’ll chat about this in due course. Are we looking at a Norwich team that could result in fair win depending gate crash off the back of a terrible start to the season? But yeah, West Brom, one of many big clubs down there but one of the few seemingly that are attempting to pull themselves out of the trouble and get themselves… and let’s be honest, with the squad that they’ve got another underperforming squad in this division that’s at the wrong end of the table. It shouldn’t be down there. Managerial changes, of course, haven’t helped. But yeah, it feels like it will be one of those potentially transitional, slightly worrisome seasons at times. But seemingly, they’ll get the job done.

Simeon: Strangely, Millwall, you just feel they have that underdog spirit mentality. I don’t know if it’s just a bit of a cliche about them but as soon as they went second, they felt like things kind of changed a little bit and there was a little bit of extra pressure that maybe wasn’t there before. And even then, when they took the lead against Norwich the same kind of thing happened.

David: Well, we’ve all seen that though over the course of it. The only ones that have really reacted to it, I think, has been Coventry. So Coventry, when they faced Boro after Boro shoved them down to second, they reacted and then went on a wonderful run that’s pulled them away from there and almost to the brink of promotion. You look at Boro getting up there and tailing off, Millwall have done the same. It’s now the big question whether they can do what we know that they’ve done before with the same manager. So yeah, no, I’m intrigued with that. And I’ve got a lot of time for the way that Alex has handled Millwall and what he’s done with him. So it’ll be in absolutely no doubt that he needs to get a reaction from his players and maybe being on the road off the back of Monday’s disappointment helps him.

Simeon: West Brom are winless in the last nine league games against Millwall. They’ve beaten them since February 2020. What’s the score going to be at the Hawthorns?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Millwall 2-1 win

COVENTRY v SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY:

Simeon: Coventry can theoretically go up on Saturday. Obviously, part of it is dependent on Millwall dropping points, which you’ve said they haven’t. But if Millwall do drop points, Coventry can go up if Middlesbrough then also drop points. A draw will also be enough for Coventry if Millwall and Middlesbrough both lose. So if Millwall drop points on Friday night, Coventry win, then Coventry will go up if Middlesbrough then drop points in their 3pm kickoff at home to Portsmouth on Saturday.

David: Yeah, I mean, it’s quite clearly when, not if, isn’t it? Let’s be honest. It would take something pretty catastrophic for them to mess it up from here. But I think they’re just been so good. So watching them on Friday, they were fantastic. Even though they had to really go at it from Derby County’s point of view. And I want to say fantastic. Maybe if you’re a bit into the aesthetic of football, maybe some of that was slightly different from how effective they’ve been over the course of the season. But they had to find a way to win. They did. And against Hull City, found a way not to lose. So nicely set up for the weekend, isn’t it? And if it happens off the back of an Easter weekend where everyone’s been going at it hammer and song, then more credit to them.

Simeon: Sheffield Wednesday, of course, to the opposition. They’re on minus five points now. They’ll really want to get to zero points in the season. Battled hard for a draw against Leicester on Easter Monday, it’s hard to see them get anything here, if we’re being perfectly honest.

David: It is. I mean, the thing that really does make you think about Wednesday is obviously the absolute show with everything off the pitch and what it’s done to the club and what it’s done, obviously, to the status as a Championship club. There’s still a squad there, yes, I know it’s a mixture of young lads and some of the big hitters have moved on, but there is experience. There’s still a squad there that should have won more games than they have. I understand the feeling around it. I get it. And having been at clubs where this has been a situation and everyone from the outside looking in goes, ‘oh, we need to concentrate and get some results’. I mean, haven’t won in the league since September against Pompey, that is away from the catastrophe off the pitch, that is utterly catastrophic on the pitch as well. This is not me kind of heaping misery on Wednesday because they’re long-suffering fans have been through this before. And it’s an assault on the senses following that football club. And I mean that in all wonderful senses and when things aren’t going so well, situations as well. But yeah, to have not won in that sense, just to give the fans something to cheer. I don’t know. Am I being a bit harsh there?

Simeon: No, I kind of agree with you. My feeling is if they’re getting beaten, you know, six or seven every week, you’d think, hey, this is a team that are just ferociously and equipped to deal with this division. Like, you know, what do you see occasionally in those kind of those lower leagues? You know, you get those stories, everyone from the Sunday league team who’s like got a minus 700 goal difference or something. But the fact they’re in a lot of games, I think they should have more points. They should still be bottom of the league. Don’t get me wrong, even with the deduction. But I don’t think any team with even a semblance of a squad should have only won one game all season and none at home. I just don’t see how that’s possible in a league like this.

David: I do agree with that because it’s, and again, that’s not me overtly kind of criticising the players. It’s just making the point of surely people are, and I’ve not had the chance to get in depth with any Wednesday fans recently, but surely they look around going, yeah, but we can at least win some games or the odd game, even though everything is catastrophic around us. So because what they need to be very, very careful of is taking this form into the League One. Don’t they? Because the expectation of them in League One is to do what other teams have done, which is bob back down, blast back up again. But if there’s more points deductions on the way, I don’t know. It’s just a really eggy situation there with a lot of people that should have done fundamentally better.

Simeon: Coventry won five in the last six league games against Sheffield Wednesday, though that did come in this fixture last season. So there was a time not that long ago when Sheffield Wednesday were beating Coventry. It feels like a very long time ago now. What’s the score going to be?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Coventry win 2-0.

NORWICH v IPSWICH

Simeon: Norwich on a really, really good run of form. They’ve probably left it just about too late for the playoffs, but they’re not going to be short of reason to put in a performance on Saturday because obviously this is a real chance to strike a blow to Ipswich’s promotion hopes and also retaliate for the defeat of Portland Road earlier this season. This should be a fun game. Shouldn’t it perhaps with lots riding on it in all kinds of ways?

David: Yeah, and I don’t think it’s lost on anyone the massive favour that Norwich did Ipswich last weekend by beating Millwall for then Ipswich obviously to do their job and climb to second. So I think what you’ve seen with Norwich is a team that’s been fundamentally transformed under Philippe Clement. It’s something that we’ve mentioned many times over the course of the last few months. And Kieran’s team doing what he always kind of said, even though I remember the first time around and we were all kind of going, of course you’re looking at the division, of course you’re looking at the results, but he’s quite clearly said, no, we’ll concentrate on us because the maths that year worked and the maths this time round also works, doesn’t it? He’s basically saying we win our games, then we’re all right. And he’s absolutely categorically correct. So it’s no, and again, given the facts, as I said, that Norwich had given them a bit of a leg up last week, they’ll be absolutely dying to put a pin in it this time around.

Simeon: Yeah, you say that Ipswich, I do think they’ve also been a little bit fortunate. I know you can only play the seasons in front of you. But I mean, if this was last season, the points tally they have, they’d be well off then. Sheffield United would be running off as champions pretty much the way they went about it last season. And now it just shows us all about what the teams around you are doing as well.

David: But then it’s not an exact science, is it? You know what I mean?

Simeon: No, there has been talk of Norwich potentially running into the playoffs. I believe you touched upon it earlier. I think obviously the problem is, is that the team in sixth for the moment is Southampton, who are just absolutely relentless at the minute. So they’re probably looking at Hull City and I don’t think they’ll be able to do quite enough to catch Hull City in fifth. I mean, that will be their problem. But you know, you can just keep winning games and see what happens. Norwich are unbeaten in the last nine home league games against Ipswich. They haven’t lost to Ipswich at Carrow Road since a 2-1 loss in February 2006. It should be mentioned, of course, Ipswich do have those two games in hand, but they have to play Norwich this season, they still have to play Southampton this season, they still have to play Middlesbrough this season. So this promotion race is a long, long way to run. What’s the score going to be at Carrow Road?

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2 draw

QPR v BRISTOL CITY

Simeon: It’s 12th v 11th and it’s two teams with not much to play for between now and the end of the season. Obviously, QPR will want to finish positively. Roy Hodgson has started well, back-to-back wins over Easter in charge of Bristol City, so he’ll obviously want to keep that going. Bristol City are unbeaten in their last eight away league games against QPR with their last two visits finishing level. So what’s the score going to be at the Betrayed Loftus Road Stadium?

David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1 draw

BIRMINGHAM v WREXHAM

Simeon: Birmingham have drifted away in the last few weeks and there’s been a bit or quite a lot of dissatisfaction at St Andrews. A win here, though, would mean a lot against the Wrexham side who were pulled apart by Southampton on Tuesday night to be leapfrogged out of the top six. I mean, they were absolutely pulled apart. I know they got a goal back at one point and had a decent 15, 20 minutes, but the game really got away from them towards the end. Birmingham, obviously, this was a big perceived rivalry from last season and Birmingham, of course, with a bit of pressure on Chris Davis after an unsatisfactory couple of months, will want a good result there. It’s potentially a bit of a pin in Wrexham’s playoff hopes.

David: Yeah, definitely. It’s a game that’s nicely teed up, as you say, from both angles and I think Wrexham will be licking their wounds. I mean, I can’t believe, I think for one second, that Phil Parkinson wasn’t anything other than furious with the result against a very good Southampton side who are buoyant, to say the least. And from Birmingham City’s point of view, their look at what they’ve seen in a consolidatory season in the Championship means that I’d like to think that they would be gearing up for something pretty special next time around. A reaction needed from Wrexham, a good strong end to the season from Birmingham City’s point of view, as you say, with Chris as well at the helm. I mean, there was that incident at the weekend where, potentially, on another day, you come away with a draw from Ipswich when balls are spotted across lines or staying in bounds. But yeah, pressure’s on them as a home side, regardless of where Wrexham find themselves on the table. Birmingham are now unbeaten in the last six league games against Wrexham, which is a run stretching back to 1980.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-2 draw

CHARLTON v PRESTON

Simeon: The rest of the Saturday, 3pm now, we start with Charlton Athletic versus Preston North End. Charlton probably need a point or two to guarantee safety, but they are pretty much there. Preston mid-table, what’s the score going to be at the Valley?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Charlton will win 1-0.

LEICESTER v SWANSEA

Simeon: Leicester City start the weekend a point adrift of safety. Swansea mid-table, what’s the score going to be at the King Power Stadium?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Swansea to win 2-1.

MIDDLESBROUGH v PORTSMOUTH

Simeon: This result could be crucial in Coventry’s chances of being promoted this weekend. They also have their own promotion hopes. They’re trying to rebuild after just a point over Easter weekend. They led Millwall and Swansea and only got a point from those two games. Portsmouth, a point clear of the bottom three, albeit of a game in hand on the sides below them. Two points over Easter weekend.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 2-1 Middlesbrough

OXFORD v WATFORD

Simeon: Oxford are one of those sides below. Portsmouth are a point adrift of safety. Watford are in mid-table.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-0 Oxford win

SHEFFIELD UNITED v HULL

Simeon: Sheffield United are in mid-table. Hull start the weekend in fifth, still looking good for a playoff spot. What’s the score going to be at the Bramall Lane?

David Prutton’s score prediction: Hull City to win 2-1.

SOUTHAMPTON v DERBY

Simeon: Southampton jumped into the top six in midweek. Derby are three points behind them in eight and they’ve played a game more. You feel a win here for the Rams is needed if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

David Prutton’s score prediction: Southampton to win 2-0.

STOKE v BLACKBURN

Simeon: Stoke in mid-table. Blackburn are edging towards safety. They are six points clear of the drop zone, heading into the weekend. Good job Michael O’Neill has done there so far. He’d get a win on Saturday or Wednesday.

David Prutton’s score prediction: 1-1 draw
