Jhon Duran scores absolute screamer as Everton bottle 2-goal lead again to lose 3-2 at Aston Villa

Jhon Duran scores an absolute screamer as Everton bottle a 2-goal lead yet again to lose 3-2 at Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

This came weeks on from the same result against Bournemouth, before the international break, putting yet more pressure on Sean Dyche.

After all Aston Villa’s dominance in the first half, Everton were the ones to take the lead on 16 minutes with ex-Everton midfielder Onana down on the floor rolling around clutching his ankle, wanting a foul for the challenge on him from McNeil, who nicked the ball, went forward, Villa defenders backed off and he sent his strike into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Everton were 2-0 up on 27 minutes, Calvert-Lewin headed the ball home, VAR checked for offside, but he was onside and the goal was given.

It was game on with 36 minutes on the clock, Digne in space on the left, picked out by Onana, sent a ball up to the far post with Watkins leaping to nod home.

On 58 minutes, a ball was played into the path of Watkins to level the scoreline.

Then with 15 minutes to go, Duran unleashed a thunderbolt into the top corner,Pickford had no chance.

Sky Sports Jamie Carragher: “Duran, Duran! Pickford did not even smell it. What a strike from that man, wow..

“You do not see goals like that anymore, the ‘keeper is at full stretch, but he is nowhere near it! Boom!”

Calvert-Lewin then nearly got Everton level, too strong Torres, went in on goal then rattled the crossbar. Calvert-Lewin too strong Torres and he went in on goal. His shot beat Martinez but the ball rattled the crossbar.

Everton have become just the second side in Premier League history to lose back-to-back games having led by 2-plus goals in both after Bournemouth in October and November 2022.

Aston Villa have come back to win six Premier League games having trailed by 2-plus goals with only Man Utd (14), Tottenham (9), Arsenal and Man City (7 each) doing so more often in the competition.

Meanwhile, this was the sixth time Everton have lost a Premier League game having led by 2-plus goals with only Tottenham (9), Aston Villa and West Ham (7 each) losing more such matches.

Aston Villa: Martínez, Bogarde, Konsa, Torres, Digne (Maatsen 69′), Onana (Barkley 45′), Tielemans, McGinn (Philogene 90′), Rogers, Ramsey (Durán 69′), Watkins (Buendía 84′)

Subs: Diego Carlos, Barkley, Durán, Buendía, Gauci, Philogene, Nedeljkovic, Maatsen, Young

Everton: Pickford, Young, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko (Garner 26′), Gueye (Mangala 64′), Iroegbunam (Beto 81′), Harrison (O’Brien 64′), McNeil, Ndiaye (Lindstrøm 81′), Calvert-Lewin

Subs: Mangala, João Virgínia, Beto, O’Brien, Doucouré, Lindstrøm, Garner, Armstrong, Dixon

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, speaking to Sky Sports about Jhon Duran’s winner: “It takes a moment of magic like that, and Jhon has come up with it. Everyone knows what he can do, and when he’s got the opportunity he shows it. It’s one of the best [goals] we’ve seen.”

On his own form: “There’s such a quick turnaround from the Euros. A lot of the boys are getting back up to fitness. I still don’t feel 100%. I’m disappointed a didn’t get the hat-trick – I should be coming off with the match ball – but I’ll settle for the two.

“I’m not at 100%. I took some time off during the international break. I don’t want to miss too many matches, though.

“We were obviously unlucky against Arsenal. We’re delighted we got [the win] today. Now we focus on the Champions League, which everyone is looking forward to.”

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, speaking to PLP“It was a shock [to go two goals down], we were controlling the game.

“I think the first strike of the game it went through legs and they go 1-0. The second with the free-kick they go 2-0 up. But, it shows how far we have come as a club and we got three points.”

On Jhon Duran’s goal: “I have seen it from behind and I saw the ball moving – it was unstoppable.

“It was a great strike, we have been trying to held Duran in the Premier League and if he can keep the consistency he can be a really big threat.

“He can be one of the best strikers in the world, but he needs to keep his feet on the ground and to work hard.

“He has one of the top strikers [Ollie Watkins] in England playing in front of him.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports: “We’re certainly taking some knocks at the minute. Every mistake seems to be a goal, and every chance we don’t quite capitalise on.

“Unfortunately we were on the wrong side of the margins again today. It’s a tough one to take, for different reasons than the last game. We’re down to a low squad anyway, so it’s been a challenge – without a shadow of a doubt.”

On Vitaliy Mykolenko’s injury: “He said he felt ill, so we had to take it off.”

On Everton’s start to the season: “We were terrific in the last game. It’s one of those things. Today, we make a mistake and they capitalise on it. I said to the players, the killer instinct in both boxes is what’s vital. The key moment was to go 3-1 up. We didn’t and we made a mistake, and they capitalised on it. We have to keep going.

“We’re making high-quality chances. At the minute, we’ve got to score as many as it takes to win a game. That’s been a challenge since I’ve been at the club. We can’t keep leaking goals like that.

“We’re having to manipulate the team. We have to keep believing in each other. You’ve got a responsibility to deal with it – and that’s what we have to do, including me.

“[The players] are an honest group. They’ve worked very hard and been through a lot. We are where we are, so they’re very disappointed. We have to respond. Before you know it, Tuesday will be upon us.”
