‘How that’s given as a penalty’ – Sean Dyche calls out the ‘bizarre’ decision to give Man City a spot kick as Everton fell to defeat.
Dyche was left frustrated by the decision to award a penalty for a controversial handball after Nathan Ake’s effort was then considered to have hit the hand of Amadou Onana in the penalty area, leading to referee John Brooks pointing to the spot.
Julian Alvarez subsequently netted before Bernardo Silva grabbed a third to move Pep Guardiola’s side into the top four.
Dyche slammed the decision made by the referee, saying: ‘We can debate the penalty all day. It has been by managers on Zoom calls to say it’s a farce but that’s the way it goes.
‘That’s completely natural. He’s not putting his arm up to save it, he’s literally jumping in to try to block the ball. How that is given as a penalty is bizarre in my world but I must be from a different planet.
‘Tonight the linesman gives that and he’s 18 yards away so I don’t know who is giving what any more.
‘Who knows? All the managers are debating it. Someone needs to stand up at some point and realise that can’t be a penalty because he’s just throwing himself in front of it to try to block the ball, that’s it.’
“That’s completely natural… how that’s given as a penalty is just bizarre in my world!”

Ex-referee Mark Clattenberg spoke to Amazon Prime about the decision and said: ‘It changed the game, it was a big decision. When you block a shot on goal with an outstretched arm even though he’s trying to block the ball because its a shot on goal this is where referees will always look to penalise as a penalty.
‘Do I agree with it? I don’t but we’ve been discussing handle ball for many many years and we still no further forward of actually improving in, one week its given one week its not is it deliberate is it not.
‘Every week we’re debating it and the referees are just trying to apply the criteria, the laws of the game. If the referee didn’t give that penalty he would be criticised.
‘The law needs changing and it needs the coaches the players the referees to get round and try find a way to understand handball.’

Roberto Martinez also added: ‘For me, it is not a penalty at all. For me, football people know that it is not a penalty.
‘The celebration of City to get that decision told the story. It shows the hunger. It’s something that needs to be reviewed. But the law is something that doesn’t match the game.’
Before the handball incident, Jack Harrison gave Everton the lead before Phil Foden equalised for City.
Dyche wasn’t the only one unhappy, as Pep Guardiola criticised the decision to allow play to continue and not award an offside, which then saw John Stones pick up an injury.
He told Amazon Prime Video that Stones’ injury doesn’t look good, and the said in his press conference: “It’s his ankle. Sometimes you have seasons like that.
“Hopefully the damage isn’t big and he can come back soon. January will be less demanding.
“December has been really tough with important players injured but we are still there.”
“I said to Anthony Taylor but it is the same with the hands.
“You go to the Champions League and it is different.
“If it’s offside, it is offside.
“If there are doubts don’t do it.
“But if he’s offside, he’s offside.
“He had to make 25 yards and now he is injured and they say you’re right Pep but that’s the situation.”

This is how Twitter users reacted as Sean Dyche calls out the ‘bizarre’ decision to give Man City a spot kick…
@TheVillaPolls: If this is a penalty then how is the Odegard one not against Liverpool. His arm is in a natural position and close proximity
@TT_1007: Never a penalty considering how close he is. Hand is not in an unnatural position. Its subjective and had the Penalty NOT been given by Linesman it wouldn’t have been overturned by VAR!!
@OliOwen98: It’s going miles over the bar to say the least… it’s mad again how city are constantly favoured in the league… surrounding the ref is meant to be a punishment for the teams yet it benefits city time and time again 🧐
@kevinefcduffy: Never in a million years. Sadly, football over the last few years has become an inconsistent farce. What’s classed as a Red card or a pen changes week by week. Don’t start me on VAR. The worst thing to happen to English football
@LukeSlawinski2: Might aswell just boot the ball at the players hands if that’s a penalty
@healeytowers: It’s a pen before VAR but the new system it’s not… Or is it… Who knows… I’m beggining to think it depends who’s asking, as it changes every games (Ødegaard hand ball case in point) @premierleague @FA_PGMOL is broken or corrupt, either way it’s not working & we’ve lost faith
@LArmstrong15: Deliberately ambiguous ‘laws’ that mean officials and var are free to decide the outcome of games depending on what badge is on the shirt… knowing their lap dog boss will sit in a studio in a few days to tell them they are doing everything right…..as corrupt as the day is long
@dasbill7: Point blank, arm is in a natural position. Not sure what the defender is supposed to do here?
@Charlespurs: If the city players don’t confront the ref he doesn’t give it. Bows under the pressure. Very weak.
@matthewmole: Never a pen. Far too close to the everton player, ball going a mile over the bar, the game is massively weighted in city’s favour
@uden88: No different to the shaw or Odergard ones against Liverpool that weren’t given, if it’s in city’s favour they get it, the officials in this country are not fit for purpose
@BenidormToffee: One yard away and it’s blasted at Onana, nothing at all he could do to get out of the way. Not a chance that is given at the other end
@juliuscaesario: It depends what two teams are playing and in which team’s favour the decision is for
@AlexNoctaris: Ridiculous how that now counts as a pen. But it was always going to be rigged for City anyway, so oh well.
@JordD55: Don’t think I could be more 50/50 about a decision than this. Hand is up when it doesn’t need to be, outwith the ‘silhouette’ as they used to say but yet it’s so close to him and hand isn’t ridiculously high. No matter what the ref gave (or didn’t) it would be controversial.
@SteRoberts18: Never a pen, even under the current stupid laws, however the premier league want a title race, so so be it. Should have been a number of bookings for city players as well there, how many surrounded the ref?
@terryflewars: Never… but it’s City so of course they will get it. They get favoured by far the most
Different teams, different rules.
