Have a look at who they thought would finish from 24th to 1st below, some will surprise, others not so…
24) BIRMINGHAM
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Blues to finish in 24th place (relegated) for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Seven dogfights in the space of nine campaigns mean Blues have been circling the drain for some time – following delayed activity due to off-field uncertainty, it’s hard to see a squad thin on senior options going unscathed this time. A traumatic season likely awaits.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 18th place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 20th.
23) READING
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Royals to finish in 23rd place (relegated) for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Points deductions were both scourge and saviour of Reading last term: their own meant a dice with the drop, and Derby’s meant survival. With no communication from the boardroom, however, and Josh Laurent and Swift departing, 2022-23 could be a rockier ride.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 4th place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 21st.
22) ROTHERHAM
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Millers to finish in 22nd place (relegated) for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Replacing Smith will take some getting used to: while the Millers have good midfielders, their style revolved around their complete targetman. Peter Kioso and Jamie McCart are excellent additions, but are they enough to avoid a fourth Championship in a row.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 6th place for the 2021/22 League One campaign – instead they finished 2nd.
21) BLACKPOOL
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Tangerines to finish in 21st place for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Appleton is a terrific coach, but he’s unlikely to establish the same connection with the Tangerine Army as his predecessor. Narrowed build-up help Jerry Yates and a fit Shayne Lavery, yet slim recruitment for the Seasider’ stylistic shift suggests an awkward campaign.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 17th place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 16th.
20) WIGAN
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Latics to finish in 20th place for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: With a popular manager and an even more popular chairman, the Latics are a tight-knit bunch, but few of their players have thrived at this level before and survival is the objective. Reducing the 101 yellow cards picked up last term – League One’s second-most – would help.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 12th place for the 2021/22 League One campaign – instead they finished 1st.
19) CARDIFF
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Bluebirds to finish in 19th place for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: No Gareth Bale, then, but bringing in nine new faces in June means Morison can get his new-look team ready early. Adams and left-back Jamilu Collins look the pick of the bunch; any progress, however, may well be restricted by the inexperience on the pitch and in the dugout.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 12th place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 18th.
18) BRISTOL CITY
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Robins to finish in 18th place for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: City can’t afford to ship 77 goals again; coup Kal Naismith must prompt re-organisation. It’s the attacking play – starring Semenyo and Weimann – that will keep Pearson’s team comfortable, if recruits Wilson and midfielder Mark Sykes dovetail as intended.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 21st place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 17th.
17) HULL
The FourFourTwo magazine have predicted the Tigers to finish in 17th place for the 2022/23 campaign.
FFT VERDICT: Hull are now shopping in loftier markets as the ‘Turkish Simon Cowell’ Ilicali seeks a positive first season as owner in the top half. keep Lewis-Potter (who is on Brentford’s radar) and defender Jaco Greaves is vitally important: they are the soul of the Tigers.
The FourFourTwo magazine predicted the club to finish in 20th place for the 2021/22 Championship campaign – instead they finished 19th.
