Fans can’t help but talk about Callum O’Hare’s accent in his first interview as Sheffield United player

Fans can’t help but talk about Callum O’Hare’s accent in his first sit down interview as a new player for Sheffield United.

Many fans questioned where the Solihull born 26 year old would go to next after confirming his departure from Coventry City three weeks ago.

His contract came to an end at the Sky Blues, having played 182 games for the club, since his first joined on a loan deal back in August 2019.

He netted 22 goals and was part of the squad that reached the FA Cup semi-finals last season, going on to lose on 4-2 penalties to Manchester United at Wembley.

He also netted 10 goals during 2023-24 as Coventry finished 9th in the Championship, with just 9 points behind the playoff places.

There was reportedly a lot of interest in him this summer, but it’s Sheffield United who have signed him up, but to the surprise of many considering the Blades weren’t one of the reportedly clubs listed as a contender to sign him.

He has now sat down and spoken with their media team, explaining the decision to move, but it’s his accent that’s got everyone talking, as it previously has done with fans and a number of media outlets.

Twitter user @jack_2831 wrote: Born in Solihull and spent his whole life in the midlands. give over with that fake accent.

His tweet went on to get over 5,000 likes, and nearly 2 million views within 24 hours.

CLUB STATEMENT:

United have fought off fierce competition from a number of clubs to land the services of an exciting attacking player on a long-term deal.

Callum O’Hare, formerly of Coventry City, has penned a four-year-contract at Bramall Lane and arrives on a free transfer, with the deal concluded shortly after it was confirmed that Wales international Kieffer Moore had also become a Blade on Monday.

And, understandably, Chris Wilder is delighted with the double swoop and commented: “Like Kieffer, Callum is another player who has been on our radar for some time. I don’t think there is a club in the Championship, and certainly some teams in the Premier League, who wouldn’t relish the opportunity to work with Callum – quite simply he is a talented individual and we are thrilled he wanted to take the next stage of his career with us.

“Our punters will know a lot about Callum, he has performed well against us for Coventry in the past and I know they will have seen attributes which fit with what they expect a Sheffield United player to be like.

“I’ve spoken at length about the type of players we want here going forward and about getting the culture right. Callum ticks boxes with what we are looking for and we, as a staff, can’t wait to get working with him.”

The player himself echoed the sentiments of his new boss, as he looks ahead to life at S2. He added: “I am buzzing to be here. It is a big club; I had some interest from some other teams and other leagues but I just thought that this was the right step in my career so I can’t wait to go out there now and play.

“I have a lot of time for the players, fans and coaches at Coventry, they have been a big part of my life and my career, but I just felt that it was the right time to move on.

“I met Chris Wilder in Birmingham and from there I obviously knew what a top man he was. He kept in touch and since then the conversations kept flowing and I knew he was definitely the right person to work under.”

O’Hare joined Aston Villa at the age of just seven and progressed through the development age groups before signing his first professional contract with the club in 2015, making his senior debut two years later against Colchester United in the League Cup.

His league bow for Villa followed and O’Hare would make six first team appearances during the 2017-18 season. In January 2019, the Solihull-born operator went out on-loan to Carlisle United and scored three goals in 16 appearances for the League Two Cumbrians.

In August 2019, O’Hare joined Coventry City on a season-long loan, scoring four goals in 40 appearances in a Covid shortened campaign that saw the Sky Blues promoted to the second tier as champions.

Following his release by Villa in June 2020, O’Hare joined City on a permanent basis and in total scored 22 times in 182 appearances in all competitions for Mark Robins’ side, with his last goal coming in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United at Wembley.

As mentioned, fans can’t help but talk about Callum O’Hare’s accent in his first interview as a Sheffield United player…
