Chris Davies apologises to fans and takes responsibility after Birmingham’s 6-1 defeat to Brentford in the Carabao Cup Second Round.

Nathan Collins scored twice, while Callum Wilson, Aaron Hickey, Mikkel Damsgaard and Igor Thiago all got one each to put more pressure on the Blues boss.

The home fans inside St Andrew’s made their feeling known, venting anger at the players, booed them off, with calls for Davies to leave.

Birmingham’s Chris Davies said, as per Sky Sports:

“My message to supporters tonight is ‘sorry’. It’s not very pleasant and I can understand how frustrating it is for them.

“It was a very tough evening for us, a painful evening, and incredibly disappointing to lose a game 6-1 at home.

“There were many situations where we were just not good enough to compete and I take ultimate responsibility for it – and the players will have to do it in their own minds.

“We were beaten by a team a long way ahead of us in every aspect. Was 6-1 a fair reflection? Probably.”

Christoph Klarer said: “Really painful evening, we couldn’t match the quality and we didn’t put up enough of a fight.

“Yeah, that’s what I need to say honestly, was really painful to fall apart like that in our own stadium where we shared so many good memories over the years. Yeah, it’s really painful and I can only yeah apologise to the fans.

In the difference in quality between the two sides: “Yeah, I agree. But we were never going to match them in terms of individual quality, but we need to put up more of a fight. We we had to make it harder here at St. Andrews, it was too easy to score against us.

“And yeah, we got punished by a really good team, but the score is deserved for them because they the golfing quality and was that much different. But uh like I said, we certainly need to be better in every aspect of the game.”

On being underdogs: “We’ve held our own against likes Newcastle and Leeds previously. Something just seemed off today. Something didn’t click and that’s the disappointing thing cuz we’ve matched Premier League opposition here on stadium before.

“So to lose like we did today is is really really painful and yeah certainly not good enough from us.”

On one to review over the next few days: “Yeah, everyone needs to look at themselves, are you doing enough as a player? Are you giving everything uh every day in training and on match match day? I think that’s the most important thing.

“But yeah, like I said, we’ve got so many games coming up fast. You don’t want to turn one bad game into to a bad week or a bad month. So, we need to put it behind us and put up a fight on Friday.

“We need to put more of a fight. The basics need to be better and that’s yeah, what I expect of the lads.”

On staying together: “Yeah, I think we need to take the criticism coming our way today. I think we deserve it, but I think we need to stick together as a club.

“Like I said, I take full responsibility for that performance today. As captain, it wasn’t good enough. And yeah, we need to gain the trust of the fans again with with our own performances and we’re in charge of that.”

Brentford’s Keith Andrews said:

“I didn’t really blink an eyelid making so many changes.

“There is a huge narrative around cup games with coaches making changes but with the squad we have, there are fine margins between who plays and doesn’t play.

“We needed to compete really hard to play the game we wanted. I thought overall we produced a really good performance.”

With KH’s silent treatment recently and Davies’ poor football/team selection, all the hard work KH has done over the past two and a half seasons is rapidly becoming undone. We are going backward.
