Alessio Dionisi says sorry and calls of unity after Watford lose 5-1 to Peterborough in the Second Round of the Carabao Cup.

James Clarridge turned in an own goal, Harry Leonard scored twice, while Bolu Shofowoke and Harrison Jones got one each. Mamadou Doumbia could only get a consolation for the Hornets.

Alessio Dionisi put out a young Watford side, giving four defenders their debuts, and making 11 changes to the side who played out a draw against Wrexham at the weekend.

Alessio Dionisi said, as per the club website: “It was important that we used today to prepare for the next match against West Ham.

“We did not play well, but it was an opportunity for six academy players.

“For me, these players played at their maximum.”

Dionisi with a message to supporters: “Let’s stay together. In this moment we are not ready for two competitions. It’s clear.

“We are sorry for the supporters for this result, but tomorrow we will not think about it any more.”

He added: “Payero arrived late, Kayembe arrived after the World Cup, Zemura arrived late, and it is important to prepare for the Championship.

“We are not happy about today, but that is normal when we play with six young players.

“Before the match we wanted to win, but football is like this.”

Looking ahead to the next game: “We have a good mentality which is good for our future.

“If we work all together, we believe positive results will arrive.”

Peterborough’s Luke Williams told the club’s media: “So pleased with them, how hard they worked and how much threat they posed going forward. They stood up to the quality of the opposite, it was everything really.

Interviewer: “When you’re in the dugout, when they have a performance like that, and for all of the players out there, you must sit there very proud because not many teams will come to a place like this and score five goals, regardless of the team they put out.”

Luke: “The incredible feeling of pride. Pride in front of me, the pitch, pride behind me, the way the guys were, the way they’ve been the whole summer. Yeah, a huge sense of pride there.

“And I think the players that have just joined us, I hope that they feel like they’ve been looked after by a group of players that have really worked very hard over the summer and they look like very much part of the team already. think that’s fair to say.”

Troy Deeney, while on punditry for Paramount Plus, was asked where did it all go wrong?

He replied: “Great question, feel it highlighted that the reason I feel they’re to be in a relegation battle this year as it currently stands because you take out your starters, you try and give some of the secondary players some time, some minutes and unfortunately they’re just kids and kids can’t just learn on their own.

“You can’t just have a group of kids and say right go and play against the Peterborough team that are very good. They have a young squad as well, but their younger players have played a season, two seasons of men’s football.

“A lot of the Watford under 23s have only played against other under 23s. We used to call it reserve team football in our day. Whatever you play against these guys and you’re not really physically fit, the speed, the tempo, you just get found out and that’s what happened today.

“So, yeah, the reason I’m a little bit concerned is because ultimately any injuries, any suspensions, these are the guys that are going to have to step in. And unfortunately, they’re just not at the level.

“You know, I got a bit of, I want to say critique from people online, I’m told for the first game, I thought they over celebrated. They drew against Wrexham. Now they’ve lost. So in the first three games, it’s one, one drew one lost one.

“And there’s people getting all the way up and I’m just trying to say just just be careful because we still need to get in my opinion, four or five players in just to be able to stay up this season.

“If you want to compete now, you’re talking six to ten players, but I just think they’ve had a good start. It always happens because the transfer window is open. People are playing. People want to come in, know, all that expectation still there.

“But by the time the window closes, if this is the squad is currently constructed. It’s going to be a long season.”
