Swindon Town fans are feeling more optimistic following the appointment of 42 year old manager Michael Flynn, confirmed on Monday.
The Robins bring in ex-Walsall and Newport boss Michael Flynn as their new boss as replacement for the sacked coach Jody Morris.
Flynn will be in attendance for Swindon’s final game of the League Two season at home to Crawley, who have avoided relegation.
He joins the County Ground outfit who have picked up 58 points from 45 games played and are 17 points behind the playoff places.

CLUB STATEMENT:
“As we bring the curtain down on the 2022/23 EFL Sky Bet League Two season and gear up for our final fixture here at the County Ground against Crawley today, we’d like to provide an update on the appointment of our next manager.
“We are delighted to announce Michael Flynn has agreed a deal with the club to take the role and lead us forward, signing a two year contract.
“This was a thorough and fast-moving process as we had very specific requirements for this role, and Michael quickly became the leading candidate.
“We wanted to appoint a manager who is experienced at League Two level, and Michael’s knowledge of the current squad, the division itself and potential new recruits is very comprehensive and impressive.
“He has a record of recruiting well and has already identified areas he wishes to strengthen with a list of targets, and he will have our full support as he rebuilds the squad.
“Flynn joins Swindon having managed over 300 games at League Two level and has twice led sides to a playoff final.
“Throughout his managerial career he’s also had great success in cup competitions, which includes reaching the FA Cup Fifth Round with Newport.
“If you look at his record in terms of win percentage, league finishes, cup runs and player sales with extremely limited resources, we feel he has done an excellent job on a consistent basis.
“He has the highest qualifications in the game as a holder of a UEFA Pro Licence with a clear identity of how he wants to play, along with a track record of developing and improving players, alongside his extensive contacts, knowledge and enthusiasm, we’re hoping he can add promotion with us to his CV.
“We feel we have the nucleus of a good young squad here, and by adding experience and leadership, we believe we can really challenge for promotion next season.
“We are convinced Michael is the right man to lead us and give us the best chance of achieving our goal, so please get behind him and the team next season and carry on supporting our great club, as you have since the day I arrived and a for a long time prior.
“Let’s win promotion and push our great club closer to where it should be, COYR!”
Michael will officially begin his role at the club after today’s final League Two fixture with Crawley Town at SN1.
He’ll also be assisted by Wayne Hatswell, who will join our existing coaching team of Gavin Gunning and Steve Mildenhall.
An official press release with further details will be provided shortly.
As mentioned, Swindon fans are feeling more optimistic following the appointment of 42 year old manager Michael Flynn…
@AidanAS2001: Good to see we’ve finished it early so we’ve got the whole summer to rebuild around him. Also a bit of experience aswell compared to the last couple managers we’ve had
@dougcope: Hangon a minute! I was settling in for a nice long 4-6 week period of speculation and frustration with lots of stone upturning and due diligence… surely we haven’t made an appointment swiftly?! 😲 Welcome Mike! 👏🏻
@Mossa152: Walsall fan here. Don’t be put off by his performance with us. We are a toxic club and everyone seems to fail since Dean Smith. He was doing great for us around Xmas but we lost 2 of our best players and never recovered.
@Neilhoughton82: I was sceptical when I first heard his name mentioned but by the sounds of it he’s in full control ie recruitment and playing style . He’s got experience been to 2 po finals. He’s what we need imo
@loose_as: Good positive move, don’t know much about Flynn/Hartswell but they are reds now so get my full backing. Pleased to see GG/SM remain at the club. I’d like to see GG get his badges and maybe get a chance in the future. Come on you reds.
@ashstfc1984: Good to see the club have acted quickly and given the job to someone who knows the league. Hopefully we hit the ground running next season 🙏🏻 an interesting summer incoming 👀 #STFC #COYR ❤️🤍❤️🤍
@SwindonSparkle: Welcome to SN1 Mike, wishing you all the best at #STFC
@AidanAS2001: Good to see we’ve finished it early so we’ve got the whole summer to rebuild around him. Also a bit of experience aswell compared to the last couple managers we’ve had

@DaddyDannyDill: That’s quite an impressive statement and one that I didn’t think he was capable of. It looks as though MF is also going to be responsible for transfers. I’m enthused now!
@LouELad1: Lets back him & see what he can do. At least its not been last minute & he will have a chance to build something pre-season
@the__dart: Great and quick appointment. Look forward to seeing a new squad being built and new team in action next season
@stfcjosh: Happy with that, lets back him and get behind him, least Clems learnt and acted quickly to get someone ❤️
@Michael_Benke: I really like it and we know what we’re getting. Experience at this level and looks like he’ll be fully backed with a big say on signings which is good. Won’t always be pretty but more teams get out of L2 playing Flynn’s style than not which is all that matters #stfc
@Jake__Kimberley: Hope he does well with them and I wish him good luck. Shame it didn’t work out for him with us
@lewis_sparey: A swift appointment which gives us the best possible chance at building a squad over the summer. Proven at league 2 level, everyone saying tippy tally football won’t cut it they’ve now got they’re man who can churn out results with good proper up and at them football #stfc
@DMCG1991: Good luck Flynn. Can’t really judge him on the Walsall spell as nobody does well here because we still have a board in place who are experts at failing every year and that feeds down to the management and playing squad.
@BennettKaru: Speedily resolved. I like the appointment but the style of player we have contracted might be a challenge. No mention in the statement about working with a DoF/technical director, and that Flynn recruited well. Could be an interesting season
@ConnorCarpente6: take that 👏
@tommymezza: Experienced, knows the league, done well on a tight budget. Back him properly, could be a good appointment #stfc
@CraigDean80: Looks like Flynn will have a big say on recruitment which is massive. Seems like lessons have been learned, so fair play to the club, I’m cautiously optimistic. I also don’t care a toss about his style of football, just want to play however it takes to get out of L2. #stfc
@clifford12120: Think this a pretty decent appointment and seems to be a clear move away from the academy team that the club has become the last few years. The pessimist in me sees nothing less than this all going wrong though 🤣 #stfc
@timofthetown: Can’t argue with the speed of this appointment 👏👏 I’m on board. Bags of experience and a cup pedigree 👊👊⚪🔴 #stfc
@Ryan__Jones9: Very much sounds like he’s in control of his own recruitment as well. Definitely an appointment I can get behind. Just get us out of this wretched league.
