Jeff Stelling in awe of long range wonder goal by Wycombe’s Lewis Wing at Portsmouth

Jeff Stelling was left in awe of a long range wonder goal by Wycombe’s Lewis Wing at Portsmouth on the final day of the season.

The 27 year old saw Oluwayemi off his line, and decided to lob him from 40-yards out, sending the away end wild.

It was his ninth of the season – meaning he is now level with Mehmeti as the club’s highest this campaign.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park with Portsmouth securing an 8th place while the Chairboys are 9th.

After Marlon Pack had levelled following Garath McCleary’s opener, Lane cancelled out Lewis Wing’s stunning long-range strike to give Pompey the point they needed to finish above their visitors.

Pompey dominated the first half but it was Wycombe that opened the scoring at the 31st-minute mark, a poor pass from Josh Oluwayemi, McCleary sprinted forward and sent the ball past the goalkeeper.

Pack headed in from a Michael Jacobs corner after a second set piece in as many moments.

In the second half, Wycombe’s Lewis Wing, who had nowhere to go, scored from 40 yards or so out in the 54th minute to give Wycombe the lead.

With 18 minutes left however, Pompey levelled the scoreline when Lane netted.

On the goal, Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield said, as per Bucks Free Press: “We know about the talent and ability Wingy possesses and he’s been incredible all season.

“He’s been a big player for us and he has produced moments of quality that have stood out.

“He just has that and whilst it was amazing goal, we’re not that surprised as he produces moments like that all the time in training.”

On the game, he continued: “It was a very entertaining game, nothing like an end-of-season match.

“We might have felt a bit hard done by near the end when we had our third goal ruled out for offside, but they had several good chances too.

“So a 2-2 draw with plenty of entertainment is a nice way to end the season.

“We did not look at this like an end-of-season game as I wanted to approach it in the right way.

“The lads applied themselves in training all week after a couple of disappointing results, and to me and my staff, the process in wanting to improve is very important to me.

“We live our lives by it as we want to make sure we can be the best that we can be whenever we step out.

“And of course, we want to improve but we showed lots of quality.

“The lads did that today [May 7].”
