Darrell Clarke speaks for the first time on the decision to become the new manager of League Two club Tranmere Rovers.
The 48 year old has signed on a two-year deal, having last managed Bristol Rovers, who sacked him in December after his side picked up a tenth straight defeat that saw the club drop into the relegation zone.
Despite that, most fans are happy with the appointment by Tranmere, who avoided the drop on the final day of the 2025/26 season, hopeful that he has turn their fortunes around and has more of a say.

The club said in a statement via the website: “Tranmere Rovers are delighted to announce the appointment of Darrell Clarke as First Team Manager on a two-year contract.
“Clarke, who has almost 700 games in charge in the dug-out, began his managerial journey at Salisbury City and quickly built a reputation for delivering results, guiding the club from the Southern League Premier Division to the National League with two promotions in just three seasons.
“He moved to Bristol Rovers in 2014 and led the Pirates back into the Football League in 2015, before securing a back-to-back promotion to League One in the following year.
“A move to Walsall followed in 2019 before Port Vale appointed him in 2021. Clarke went on to guide the Valiants to promotion to League One the following year ā the fifth promotion of his managerial career.
“After more recent spells with Cheltenham Town, Barnsley and Bristol Rovers, Clarke arrives at Prenton Park with a track record of building competitive, resilient teams.
Darrell commented: āIām thrilled to be joining Tranmere Rovers. This is a club with real history, a passionate fanbase and huge potential, and I canāt wait to get started.
“I know how much this football club means to its supporters, and my focus is on building a team that works hard, competes with intensity and gives the fans something to believe in every time they come to Prenton Park.
āThe Chairman was very open with me about the fact that there is a big recruitment job to do because we have fewer players under contract than usual at this time of year, but I see that as an attraction because the job is much harder when you are inheriting a large number of players who are already under contract but may not fit with your style or be the type of characters you want in the building.ā
Chairman Mark Palios said: āIām really pleased to appoint Darrell. We had a number of experienced managers with impressive CVs apply for the role, but it became clear in our conversations that Darrell understood the Club, relished the challenge ahead and has the determination to make a real impact. He will bring a strong work ethic and high standards into the building, and I believe that will translate on the pitch into what the SWA want to see ā committed, fit players who will do what it takes to win.
āAlthough Darrell is still only 48, he brings almost 700 games of managerial experience, five promotions and a reputation within the game as a driven, accomplished leader. We look forward to seeing him lead the SWA into an exciting new chapter.ā
An interviewer asked Darrell Clarke – “How does it feel to join the club?”
DC: “Thank you very much, Mark. Listen, it’s a massive privilege for me to manage Tranmere, you know, with a with a club I’ve come up against with an unbelievable support base.
“So, first of all, I’d like to to thank the owners, Mark and Nicola, for giving me the opportunity to do that, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Interviewer: “And what was it about Tranmere specifically that made you want to join?”
DC: “I just think it’s a club with massive potential. Listen, it’s been a tough few years. I understand that, but I think with a support base that we’ve got, the stadium is an opportunity to get up to the level and you know, hopefully one day be competing to to get out of League One, but uh it’s been been tough few years for the football club. I understand that.
“But I think it it fits both parties to be honest, you know, I’ve obviously had experience of getting teams out out of League Two, but also an opportunity at a club where [snorts] it seems like a fresh start for both of us. You know, we we’ve not got too many players left over from from last season. There’s that capabilities of of building a really strong squad that can that can compete.”
Interviewer: “As you alluded to, you’ve achieved two promotions to League One before, but as the chairman said, last season was difficult for the club. Horrible question, I know, but what’s the aim for this season?”
DC: “Yeah, listen, my aim is always always to get promoted. That’s that’s the way I work. That’s the way I like to set standards from day one from from in the building. I don’t understand it is a big job. I I haven’t come into this job without my eyes wide open.
“But it’s a job that I’m really excited to get my teeth into. I think we have to put the past behind us pretty quickly. I think we, you know, it’s up to me to get a team that the the the supporters can get behind and enjoy the football. That’s that’s very important. And, you know, when you do that and you get that bit of momentum, anything can happen. So, be working hard to do that. We’ve got a lot of work to do over the course of through the summer to get the recruitment right, we have to be patient with that. However, it’s something, like I said, to to look forward to and uh hopefully uh come the start of the season, we can start building that momentum and have a have a successful season.
Interviewer: “We’ll touch on player recruitment in a moment, but I know you managed Nathan Smith and James Plant before. You gave James his senior debut. Are you looking forward to reuniting with them?”
DC: “Yeah, listen Nathan obviously Nathan and James I know know pretty well but not just them looking looking at the the whole squad but it’ be you know Nathan was part of a promotion team from with me at Port Veil. He’ll know him and James will know the standards that I set. They know me very well and they’ll they’ll know exactly and that message will be passed to the squad pretty quickly as well to be honest with you because you know it’s important that those standards are met from day one and and working with two players of Nathan and James they can they can pass on the message to the boys of what I’ll be expecting for when for when for when we’re ready to return for for pre-season.”
Interviewer: “And what sort of attributes do you look for in a player? Nathan appeared in every game for us last season. He was a threat in both boxes. I’m sure that’s something you value?”
DC: “Yeah. I mean, all players have different skill sets, but one of the non-negotiables for me is is the that desire, you know, is I’m not asking for a lot of my players to make sure that they’re giving me everything in every training session and every match that they play in. So, that desire to compete, to want to do well for the football club and and then that when that happens, they do well for themselves.
“So it’s it’s making sure that the players understand that you I try and deal with a lot of non-negotiables and not loads of them but that desire and application to turn up to work every day to give their all then that we’ll see the results then come on a Saturday.
“So looking forward to building that looking forward to building that in the group that we’ve got and also building that with the new players that we’re bringing to the club.”
Interviewer: “You spoken to some of the staff this morning. How are you looking forward to working with them?”
DC: “Yeah, now I’ve spoken to staff, so as soon as you come into into a new club, it’s getting to know things, working things out, and you know, I’m firing and asking a lot of questions. I already know a hell of a lot about the the squad and the players that we’ve got in there and and know where we need to be aiming on the recruitment side of things.
“And yes, it’ll take a bit of time, but I’m excited in the rebuild. And I want everybody to get behind it, bit of patience, and we’ll get our rewards. And I think my career shows that over a period of time is is that when I’ve been trusted to be able to build something, I’ve been successful and that’s what I’m aiming to bring here.”
Interviewer: “It’s still only late May, but does that play recruitment job start now?”
DC: “Started yeah, it starts straight away and things move quickly in football, but something I always keep on the radar anyway. You know, I’ve mentioned it before in the past is when you’re out of work, what you are doing is you’re recruiting for your next job.
“So I’ve been watching a lot of games, a lot of players and and making sure that when opportunities come like this one’s come for myself now that that we’re ready to move forward in the right way on on the player recruitment side.”
Interviewer: “You mentioned the uh size of Brenton Park before uh one of the biggest stadiums in the division, one of their biggest average attendances in League Two last season, what you make of the atmosphere there?”
DC: “So we got to get our fans going. Listen, like I said before, we there’s no painting over it. It’s been a disappointing few years and we have to earn our supporters confidence and support, you know, that’s up to myself to get a team on the pitch that can do that, you know, and then the place will be buzzing, you know, because football clubs are only really going well when you’re winning football matches. And I know how passionate the support base are. I know what they’re about having come up against them on, I know what they’re they they want their team to look like. So, the hard work to start building that starts now.”
Interviewer: “And finally, do you have a message for those supporters?”
DC: Just believe, be patient, a little bit of patience, which is which is unheard of a lot in football. And I’ll try my best to make sure that I produce a team that they can get behind. And hopefully we’ve got better better times to come ahead.”

@ZaaanderSmith: A solid appointment that is for where we are as a club right now. Hes a proven manager in this league and even has a promotion on his CV. With the names mentioned he is definitely the best one. Darrell Clarke’s SWA!
@_theleonkearney:Ā Very neutral on this but shows how much we are in limbo as a club. It’s not jump off your seat worthy, it’s absolutely not a poor appointment. He’s been promoted out of this league before, but also had a stinker last season with BR. Anyone under Palios has a job on their hands.
@BoyseygolfSWA: Good luck to him. He will need it if big changes behind the scenes arenāt happening. Knows how to win promotion and hopefully raises standards significantly at the club. DC SWA
@bs4_gas: Good luck DC hope it works out for you.
@bigdikky5: Itās a very Meh from me this. Not my direction Iād of chose. But sale hasnāt happened so.. Il give him a chance. He has a blank slate of squad. And Iād expect all the ex Vale players out of contract to be rubbing hands at thought of Signing for Tranmere Vale #swa
@TrfcKeating: Surprisingly happy with this , but doesnāt look like the takeover is happening anytime soonš«£ #TRFC
@RobboSWA: Wow, another Port Vale connection. I like this appointment though, welcome Darrell!
@Stever62Roberts: The only way it’s going to work is NO INTERFERENCE. from the meddling at the top and a decent backroom staff possibly or it’s same old Same old š¤
@lennyb1983: Best we could probably wish for, and could of been A LOT worse. Now let him pick his own back room team #trfc #swa
@CraigPerkins17: Hopefully will bring higher standards to a massively underperforming club. Best of luck Darrell š SWA
@jade_short6: Doesn’t matter who was appointed fans will still bitch and moan. Wanted someone with experience, got it now crying about it 𤦠#SWA
@jnd_90: Thatās⦠an appointment. I genuinely donāt know if this is good or bad. Any indication of performance next season goes far beyond the manager though.
@paul_james7: Could have been worse I suppose, happy to give him a chance.
