Southend United boss Kevin Maher bemoans controversial Boreham Wood penalty and gets an ‘apology’ over other recent incidents.
Zak Brunt’s second half penalty saw Boreham Wood claim their fifth consecutive victory in a match of two spot-kicks against the Shrimpes.
Boreham Wood found the breakthrough after being awarded a spot kick and Brunt slotted home to go one up on the 75th minute.
Southend then had a chance to level shortly after when they were given a penalty following a handball in the area, only for Ashmore to keep out Jack Bridge’s shot.

Kevin Maher was frustrated at the familiar manner of his side’s defeat to Boreham Wood, saying as per the club website: “It’s similar to what’s gone on in the last few games. I’m incredibly proud of the players because I thought the football we played at times was brilliant but we just needed to find that end product.
“The first goal was always going to be massive because they want to kill the game. For a team that travelled to play the top of the table on Saturday, I thought the way we played, the energy and quality we showed was outstanding.
“We’d dealt with their threats ever so well up until that point. We were the ones taking the game to them and I thought we were clever with Murph [Rhys Murphy] dropping in to give us a spare man.
“His movement’s very good, he just needs a little bit of sharpness. It’s just getting that goal, and once they get a goal, they’re going to shut up shop.”
Southend say the penalty itself was given for the second tangle between Ollie Kensdale and the attacker, after their man had won the ball the first time round.
Maher gave his views on the decision: “I spoke to Mike Jones from PGMOL yesterday and he said the one at the weekend [at Wrexham] should’ve been given as a foul. The red card against Barnet should’ve been given, and I guess I’ll get another apology.
“From where we were, you could see Kensdale get a touch on the ball.
“We know we’ve got to be better than relying on decisions but it seems like everything’s going against us. We’ve got one our end which was handball because his arm’s away from his body, so we take that, but it’s very frustrating.”
