Southend hit out at controversial decision from referee in defeat against Barnet

Southend United fans and manager Kevin Maher hit out at a controversial decision from the referee in defeat against Barnet on Friday.

Barnet picked up an important win against Southend at Roots Hall to boost their promotion hopes after Idris Kanu scored the only goal of the game in the 67th minute.

Smith nearly broke the deadlock when his looping head struck the woodwork before Nicke Kabamba’s subsequent attempt was blocked on the line.

Barnet bagging three points puts them within three points of third place Woking, while the Shrimpers remain 7th in the National League and in the final play-off spot.

One big call however that went against Southend saw Barnet defender Sam Beard be handed just a yellow for bringing down Henry Sandat with the scoreline goalless at the time (first half).

“There’s a big moment in the first half and it’s a sending off, I don’t know what he’s thinking,” said Maher, as per Echosport.

“We’ve watched it back, the referee will tell you the laws of the game and whatever he thinks but it’s a stonewall red card.

“You’ve got to get the big decisions right and we talk about them all the time, officials that aren’t good enough.”

“The performance didn’t warrant a defeat. The players gave everything and showed great quality at times on a difficult pitch.

“It just needed the first goal and the game’s different. I thought Henry Sandat was brilliant and Powelly worked his socks off.”

“We’ve got lots in the treatment room at the moment and that’s killing us because we need more goals on the pitch. We’re getting Chrissy Wreh back as quick as we can without too much training, and asking him to perform.

“It’s a top-of-the table clash, and you can’t afford to cut corners, but we’ve found ourselves having to do that with the injuries we’ve got.

“We just didn’t have the cutting edge tonight to open them up at the right time and then you’re liable to one on the counter.”

Though it seems there was another decision, which didn’t best please Barnet fans on this occasion…

This is what fans said with Southend taking to hit out at a controversial decision from the referee in defeat against Barnet…

@euniesufc: DISGRACE! Last man and stopped a goal scoring opportunity

@ConorSammon100: Standard officials @TheVanaramaNL

@JB_Allen: That’s a crazy decision, ref was having a good game until then

@hfitch121: The clearest denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity I’ve seen.

@harrisufc: That is the most clear cut last man take out you’ll see in football

@cjblues2505: Should have been a red card. Poor referree again

@Kaylalula: Obvious red.

@stevebarrell: Shocking decision from the ref.

@antsk: Yep! Last man, clear goal scoring opportunity

@sufcberry: It doesn’t matter in the national League, the officials use a different set of rules to every other division

@JamShaddow: I have been to many football games and seen many bad decisions but that might be the most tragic refereeing error I’ve ever seen

@samgoody23: That’s an absolutely disgraceful decision

@tommyharris57: 100% red for me. He was just about to shoot and the other defenders wouldn’t have been able to stop that!!

@BenMapp02: At the game as a neutral and admittedly down the other end but that looked like an absolute stonewall red card. Very poor decision.

@merlinsbeard66: Ref might as well be wearing an orange shirt tonight

@CharlieEliott: He was about to have a clear ping on goal! How’s it no red

@AlecHitchSUFC: Yeah, refs bottled that
