Sean Dyche risks punishment after VAR criticism and talks empty seats as Everton lose to Brighton

Sean Dyche risks punishment after VAR criticism and talks empty seats as Everton lose 3-0 to Brighton in the league opener.

The Toffees boss has kicked off the new season by taking issuing with VAR, despite receiving warnings that such criticisms could undermine the integrity of the Premier League.

Dyche expressed his frustration after seeing a penalty decision overturned after referee Simon Hooper had initially awarded a penalty early in the second half, believing that Dominic Calvert-Lewin had been fouled by Brighton captain Lewis Dunk.

However, after reviewing the incident on the monitor, he reversed his decision with Everton 1-0 down at the time.

Recent directives from officials had suggested that Stockley Park would aim to intervene less frequently this season.

Player ratings (as per Sky Sports):

Everton: Pickford (7), Young (5), Tarkowski (7), Keane (5), Mykolenko (6), Gueye (5), Doucoure (6), Iroegbunam (8), McNeil (7), Harrison (7), Calvert-Lewin (5)

Subs: Holgate (6), Ndiaye (6), Beto (6)

Brighton: Steele (7), Veltman (6), Van Hecke (6), Dunk (7), Hinshelwood (6), Milner (6), Wieffer (7), Mitoma (9), Minteh (8), Welbeck (8), Pedro (8)

Subs: Webster (6), Gilmour (6), Sarmiento (6), Adingra (8), Ayari (8)

Player of the Match: Kaoru Mitoma

Everton manager Sean Dyche:

“A big decision on the penalty, I can’t really work it out.

“We go to these meetings, we have literally been told the bar is going to be incredibly high for the referee to make a decision, he makes a clear decision from a perfect viewing point and lo and behold he is called over to overturn the
decision.

“You are like, ‘What is the point having a high bar then?’ We are all confused by it.”

“It was a horrible game as a manager when you are doing everything you ask and concede a pretty soft goal from our point of view, a soft pass and they counter and we are 1-0 down against the run of play.

“We then concede from a poor decision from a pass and then get someone sent off and the whole feeling changes.

“Unfortunately we had these moments early last season, head scratchers. The first half was a good performance. We got punished for mistakes.

“Youngy knows he should head that and not bring it down [for the sending-off]. Those turning points and decisions are massive.”

He said to BBC Sport on empty seats: “It feels like reality at this football club, if you’re not doing well and you’re not winning that’s what happens.”

Premier League chief football officer Tony Scholes and referees’ chief Howard Webb had held meetings with managers earlier this summer warning that attacking VAR decisions would reduce confidence in the league.

The Premier League Match Centre tweeted on the decision: ‘The referee awarded a penalty to Everton for a foul by Dunk on Calvert-Lewin.

VAR recommended an on-field review as he deemed Calvert-Lewin’s foot landed on Dunk’s foot and there was no foul. The referee overturned the original decision with play restarted with a drop ball.’

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler said it was ‘clear’ the initial penalty call was wrong and should have been overturned.

He said: “When it’s a clear, clear ‘false’ decision, it should be overruled. It was a clear, clear false decision because, in the end, I think Lewis Dunk didn’t even hit the opponent, and I think (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin stands on his foot when I saw the situation, so it can’t be a penalty, and that’s why we have the VAR.”

On the game and performance, he added: “It was a good result. It was a tough game, especially the first minutes were really intense.

“It was a loud atmosphere and I think in some moments were suffered but we suffered together, and we defended quite good and then after that time we tried to control the game. We had very good chances and it was helpful for us to control the game and have ball possession.

“A clean sheet is so important to win games in the Premier League and everyone was responsible today to defend their own box, they showed the attitude, and they showed the character as players so I’m very happy for them, it was a good start, but we keep working and it’s important to stay humble after a win like this.”

Here’s what fans had to say as Sean Dyche risks punishment after VAR criticism and talks empty seats as Everton lose to Brighton…

@LuvEvertonForum: Dyche needs to be a bit more humble sometimes. His comments there won’t go down well with fans, especially given the efforts from so many.

@JustinMichaX: We left as soon as we saw Mason Holgate standing on the sideline waiting to come on 😩

@phillgaming47: Not our fault your a fucking dinosaur F off to championship with your negative tactics playing Keane and Young stupid ginger d*ckhead it’s on you you picked the team and chose to play Keane and Young the performance and tactics were unacceptable.

@Troy89221957: The team sheet screamed I’m happy with a draw & young v Mitoma was a car crash waiting to happen . Every blue was absolutely deflated before a ball was kicked , because of the players left on the bench . That’s on you dyche & nobody else 😡

@RaymonBluington: Fans left because we had better players he left benched. Chose to go defensive two nil down and ten men when we had attackers ready to go. We’re now have a right back crisis first game in and he should have took Doucoure, DCL and McNeil off at half time. Same mistakes, same result

@SoloLoMejor1878: The fans pay for the ticket they can do whatever that want.

@BobbyC_1878: He is one cheeky fucker! If he thinks that is anywhere near acceptable as a manager of any club he needs to fuck right off. Tactically he is a dinosaur and his football is predictable and easy to play against

@EvertonHel: Sort it out then – knob head!!

@leadline84: Dont play a shit side with shit tactics then

@JTDulany: I understand that Dyche is speaking for the players to a point, but individual errors were as much to blame and paying fans should be able to express their frustrations, so long as they’re not being racist etc.

@BlueBoyzNetwork: If we had a board in place that had an actual spine. I’d sack him simply for this. The flags, coach greetings, we have been dragged through the mud. So if we want to leave after you completely mess up tactically so be it.

@irishevertonian: Having a dig at the fans this early it’s only gonna go 1 way for you Sean. He shouldn’t have been in charge of us after that winless streak last season.

@TheGaryLambert: If his tactics and his players got it right, then there’d be support even if we got beat. That was on him today – and reacting like that after the match on national TV is not going to help the relationship he needs to harness. We win when they compete, today they only turned up.

@PeteClappo: Should be refunding fans paying to see players like Keane and young run the club into the ground

@ianfarrant01: First 14 minutes we pressed well as a team. Sadly your fav front 4 can’t score for toffees. Now if he started Lindstrom and iliman might have actually got the first goal.

@aharry79: I think he’s the best man for the job currently for Everton but you don’t go up against the fans – although who’s in charge that could fire him? (Genuine question)

@daytripper80: People earning a few quid a week and go the match more accountable then the people paid to be at the club it seems.

@toffee5000: I hope he is effectively saying he doesn’t blame them.
