Jamie Redknapp feels sorry for Eberechi Eze having opener controversially ruled out

Jamie Redknapp feels sorry for Eberechi Eze having his cheeky quick thinking opener controversially ruled out on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo secured Brentford a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, but much of the talk is over Eze’s having his goal disallowed.

It was a quick-thinking free-kick which had caught out Mark Flekken at his near post, but referee Sam Barrott had already blown for a foul by Will Hughes before it crossed the line.

Premier League Match Centre (@PLMatchCentre) tweeted: “#BRECRY – 26’ The referee awards a free-kick to Brentford for a foul by Hughes on Collins. The whistle was blown before the ball entered the goal, so VAR cannot intervene and the referee’s call stands.”

Reacting to that decision at half time on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “You could’ve done better to just say the referee has had a nightmare. He really has. It’s a monumental mistake.

“He should let it breathe. I’m not sure it’s even a foul first and foremost. I feel so sorry for Eze, it’s genius what he does here.

” The referee is getting too involved. Stay out of it! Let the game breathe. It’s a brilliant piece of play. He could have blown afterwards if he wanted to. I feel so sorry for Eze, it’s a brilliant goal.”

Richards added: “It’s not a foul. He’s had a stinker. We don’t want to be too harsh on him. He’s made a mistake. I agree with Jamie, he should let the game breathe.”

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to Sky Sports: “Very disappointed, especially with how the game was going.

“The referee whistled no goal, a tight offside was called, their winner was twice deflected, it is very disappointing today. Many things we did very well but we also have to be critical and we conceded too many goals. We have to analyse, but we created many situations where we could have scored.

“Many things were positive but if you lose 2-1 it is a negative.”

On the goal from the free-kick that was ruled out: “It is over. It is what it is. We talk about what we can influence. In many situations we could do better. We are not in the rhythm we should be, no excuse it is the situation.

“The team did OK but it was not the best performance we can show.”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “When you lose it is always disappointing in a game like this. We don’t look for excuses or complain about anything. it is how it is. We had many opportunities to create chances. When you concede two goals it’s difficult because we have to score three. We will analyse it and have more compactness in defense. We are disappointed today.

“We are disappointed but it is how it is. It makes no sense to complain now. We won’t get this goal back for a draw. We had a great reaction after the 1-0 at half-time and played well in the second half. We scored but it was offside. We could have avoided the cross for their goal and defended better. I’m very confident that when we get into our rhythm then we will get into these games.”

On Marc Guehi: “Everyone can see he is completely focused on Crystal Palace and the game today. The last two days, we didn’t speak about transfers because we focused on the game so no news.”

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to Sky Sports: “Very, very happy, it’s remarkable the feeling you feel after a win. One of the reasons why I’m very happy is it’s the opening game of the season. Crystal Palace are a very good team and are very difficult to play against. It was an even game that we just edged. We really worked hard in the tough moments.

“I think we showed in the first two seasons that we had the skillset to hold on to a game and get over the line. We struggled last season. In the second part of the first half, we were better.

“Ivan is a very important player and a very good player. We spoke about it last year when people were asking if we needed another offensive player. I knew we had players who could make the difference with Bryan and Wissa.”

On Toney transfer: “I want it shut before the start of the season so I don’t have to answer these questions. It’s not that far at all.”

Are there other teams involved? “That’s the question where I’m saying no comment.”

Here’s how fans reacted, agreeing with Jamie Redknapp, who feels sorry for Eberechi Eze having his opener controversially ruled out…

@craigtbfc: “VAR can’t intervene” yet we still stood about for 2 minutes waiting for a VAR decision? A multi billion pound company that buys their officials from Wish

@EastStandDan: Sounds to me like the whistle went before the ball went in? I hope so because this whole “we’re gonna be stricter with contact in the box on set pieces” will be as big as disaster when they made everything a handball 🙈

@CPFC_GEO: Game would’ve completely changed if we had a competent ref, luck is genuinely never on our side

@tank_matt: One of the worst calls I have ever seen. This ref should nowhere be near the prem

@Juppopovic: Literally what is the point of VAR. The only reason it should be used is for when referees make a clear mistake. This is what happened.

@TransferChecker: I’m a Brentford fan and even I’m annoyed about the decision to rule out Eberechi Eze’s freekick. The ‘foul’ was a minor block, nowhere near the ball, and didn’t impact the keeper’s ability to save it. It’s a totally valid goal. These officials are destroying the Premier League.

@eaglesamSE25: Best league in the world hiring refs like this 🤦‍♂️ #gamesgone

@cpfcpatriot: Is there a reason that you employ inept people as referees?

@drewsy_1991: Start of the 2024-2025 season and already we have this utter nonsense with VAR. Get fucking rid of this shit.
