Pep Guardiola gives his response after a fan calls him out for making football boring while out in New York as part of Man City’s USA tour.
It seems there is some criticism of Pep Guardiola’s style of play with Manchester City, who last season won their tenth top-flight league title – and the sixth time in seven seasons to have won the Premier League, continuing the Spaniard’s remarkable record since taking charge of the club back in 2016.
But as years gone by, and more recently, some people are finding it boring. The debate about whether his approach to the game makes it more or less exciting is likely to continue going into the 2024/25 season, with Man City favourites to win the league again, and there is speculation as to whether he would continue at City beyond that.

Pep can be heard saying in the first clip: “Football is not just pass, pass, pass.
Fan: “What happened to flair right?”
Pep: “No, of course”
Fan: “People tell me you have to pass, pass, pass.”
Pep: “No”
Fan: “Like they blame you”
Pep: “No, they blame me? Yeah that’s good, blame me, blame me no problem.”
Fan: “I need the flair”
Pep: “Yeah do whatever you want”
Pep also said that he may extend his stay at City, saying he’d love to manage at the Club World Cup next year, but is yet to make a final decision, with more talks to be had on whether it’s right for him, the players and the club.
"I'm not ruling out extending the contract if it's the right decision" 👀

@_The72 gave their opinion upon seeing the video of Pep and the fan: “Safe to say Pep has inspired a generation with his play style, which has been more risk averse. He’s definitely not the only one with that play style – teams can setup and play in so many ways to win games, so blaming Pep is harsh.
“Football has become incredibly analytical and that has had huge benefits, but it means teams prepare for games so meticulously nowadays. In turn, moves the game away from flair players and encouraging moments of individual brilliance and risk taking.
“Pep’s City team can put in such controlling performances that some will call boring at times, but they also play some electric stuff. At their best, they’re a great watch.
“To blame him alone is unfair, the game is just more risk averse as a whole. At the end of the day, it’s his task to win, and he does that a lot.
“What do you think? 🤷♂️”
This isn’t the first time that Man City have been told they’re boring.
Pep Guardiola reacts after Gary Neville’s comments about Man City being ‘boring’ to watch
Mark Goldbridge quits stream early with rant on officials, Man City and ‘boring’ Premier League
After Guardiola’s side beat Copenhagen 3-1 in a Champions League last-16 first leg, Gary Neville said he avoided it, with the manager then informed of this when speaking with the media.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville said: “I didn’t switch City on on Tuesday night. I felt a bit bored … It’s a bit of hornet’s nest because I think to call City boring would be wrong because the football they play is outstanding. I thought they were boring and found it difficult to watch them but since [Erling] Haaland’s gone [there] they are a bit more imperfect. I like them a lot more with the four big defenders and Haaland up front. But is there a bit of a boredom thing with City?”
“I am going to tell you something – in the future you will not forget: it looks easy, but it’s not,” Guardiola said at the time.
“Remember that sentence: it’s easy but it’s not. Thank you for the compliment [Neville]. What can I say? It’s so fine. Everything is so difficult in football. You have to do so many things to try to win games [for so] many years.
“What these players have done for many years and this season as well is admirable. Of course we [are given] credit. We are admired. I am pretty sure of that. The people in the world of football know how difficult it is.
“The opponents respect us. Always I said the same. Sometimes [for] people it is not enough what we are doing, but I know how difficult it is, from my experience as a manager in other clubs and when I was a football player. If people don’t appreciate it, it doesn’t matter. It’s not a big problem. [But] I think they do appreciate it – the world of football.”
This is how fans reacted while Pep Guardiola gives his response after fan calls him out for ‘making football boring’…
@Jamie7993: All subjective isn’t it. Personally a big fan of the way he sees the game and think you could point to a number of different managers to call boring before Pep. He was brought up believing in a way to play and he executes it unbelievably so fair play
@Spike_City: He is a fantastic coach. My issue with modern football is the lack of players who go past players. English Academies are churning out robots who all do the same. The euros showed us this. Spain played with two wingers who had the ability to go past people. They won it!.
@ChelseaHQ_: Blaming someone for winning is pretty funny lol.
@_MCFCLad: Pep never asked anyone to copy him
@CiaranMcCartan4: Doku has most take ons in Europe Also a player than I didn’t rate but was forced to change my mind on, the guys an all time great manager how tf can he ruin football 🤣
@TheCockerel82: Of course he’s right. However, you can’t deny Peps methods have proven VERY successful.
@ytalksfootball: People blame Pep, I don’t blame him. He found a way that works and allows him to win constantly. Instead of copying him, how about others find a way to beat him instead? More people need to be original and stop playing the victim like Pep has held football hostage or something 😂
@nut_by_nature: There’s a saying that goes, if you can’t beat them, join them
@ytalksfootball: I never hold to that. There’s always a way. No one is immortal. Football is a sport and it evolves. Pep evolved and found his own way just like others before him did. About time others start doing the same and stick to their identity instead of copying. I’ll give you another saying: The copy is never as good as the original
@Strictly_LFC7: The fan isn’t wrong. It’s one of the biggest myths in Football that Pep Guardiola plays exciting football. His City team is incredibly boring to watch. No variance, just pass the ball around, cross the ball & use world class players to win him games. 😴
@joebalthazaar: Haha yeah funny question mate yeah just play it off. He needs to answers for his crimes to football, at EVERY level. His parasitic ideologies have even infected my 6-a-side league.
@ClaireMulcahy17: Well I’d say doku on the ball suggests otherwise
@Cyru5kd7: The guy could have acc made his point better instead of telling pep ppl blame him 🤦🏻♂️ He acc had a chance to have a conversation with him and instead just started having a go at him
@SemperFiSpurs: Not Pep’s fault, blame those who copy Pep
