Darragh MacAnthony reveals why he’ll never consider appointing Roy Keane as Peterborough manager

Club owner Darragh MacAnthony reveals why he’ll never consider appointing Roy Keane as Peterborough manager after being asked on talkSPORT.

He joined Marcus Buckland on the radio station, doing a Q&A if you like, and spoke about the state of modern football and how Roy Keane would not fit in at the Posh, who recently lost to Oxford United in the League One playoff semi finals.

You can take a look at what he had to say below, with it getting over 50,000 views on YouTube alone, fair to say it also got quite a reaction from fans to…

Marcus Buckland: “Anthony’s been in touch once to know if you’d ever consider giving Roy Keane the Peterborough job.

Darragh MacAnthony: “No not for me love listening to ITV love all of that but no I don’t, I know he did phenomenal with Sunderland you know he won that promotion with them they went on a run where they won the league and got to the Premier League.

“But I think in we have to look at it this and it drives me out sometimes generations today have changed for footballers 10/15/20 years ago I said to Darren, my manager, the other day, Darren you could have said X to a player 15 years ago and he’d have no problem with it and and you’d give him a slap down the player’ come in the next day and train like magnificently.

“You do that to one of these young generational players now they are not going to use the word weak but they are a little bit fickle, a little bit fragile, and the player won’t show up the next day, his agent will probably ring in the PFA will be on they’ll be worried about his mental health, they’ll be worried about this, worried about that.

“It’s very different now the way you do with young people the way I bring my children up is very different to how a lot of people bring up their kids now, I’m trying to teach my children to have thicker skin trying to teach my children you know basically like this is the real world you’re in here and it’s not so nice and it’s not full of you know sunshine every day and I just think footballers now are a little bit different from 20 years ago.

“Roy Keane would frighten the life out of every player under the age of 23 in my opinion, in a football team, and the average age of our team is 22, so they’d probably all stick in transfer requests after two weeks so and he loses rag with them.”

Marcus: “So there’s no room left for these sort of…

Darragh: “I think there are certain horses for courses I’m not saying Roy Keane can’t manage again I’m not sure the money he earns in broadcasting he get paid the same to be a manager hence why his little hope of probably managing again

Marcus: “It’s a shame well he’s a great pundit but yeah great pundit great ex player I’m not sure it’s he’s a magnificent manager.”

Roy Keane goes viral with an explanation as to why his Ipswich team would win ‘f*** all’

This is what fans had to say, as Darragh MacAnthony says he’ll never consider Roy Keane to be the Peterborough manager…

@Jalipino_Jay: I’m sure Roy is incredibly disappointed to hear this revelation

@-chris1965: Bet Roy is gutted

@MartinRussell-mx7rq: Just how will Roy Keane recover from this

@purehyperbole5727: MacAnthony shows himself up by answering the question.

@cuzmundo1400: On behalf of Roy respectfully his gutted and disappointed

@tonylawlor8833: You don’t think Roy would want or take that job, Roy worked at levels above you McAnthony.

@yasheenmahabeer: With all Roy Keanes Premier League medals and Champions League medals and getting Sunderland back to the Premier League I’m sure his absolutely gutted

@anthonyclarke5579: I’ll get flack over this but…as a kid (15) I did a time trial and performed badly (got beaten by a girl). My old man had carted me backwards and forwards for the duration of the training course and more for many years. I was under the weather with a cold so I gave into myself. My dad came into the changing room and gave me a right bollocking, he told me to go again. I was a cry baby and told him I felt rough, I had tested his input and patience to the limit. My reward was a good crack in the mouth and a split lip. The upshot was I went and competed again in the next half hour, and performed over 10 seconds faster. Lesson learnt. My dad’s attitude to life saved me a lot of grief.

@patrickjamessimpson7268: Peterborough keep employing the same manager don’t they? That’s a lack of ambition and Roy Keane is all about quality and 100% effort.

@cyberdog1162: The guys only giving his opinion on keane as a manager, after being asked. Keane is a pundit now, and is better suited to that than management, he doesn’t have the mentality or capability to manage well in the modern game

@Jtggllkyhfff: So let’s not call them weak but they are weak. Hard men create easy times, easy times create weak men, weak men create hard times.

@pjnugent8198: It would never be boring if Roy was there.️

@joshmaddo583: I can’t imagine Keane being bothered about that but he is spot on.. this generation coming through are a bunch of snowflakes. Sancho was tweeting about Ten Hag and refused to apologise to him all because Ten Hag said Sancho hasn’t trained to the standard needed to be in the team .

@olifors7047: I think Darragh is spot on, tho I could obviously be wrong. After watching a lot of Roy Keane interviews or general football talk, I’ve always thought he was kinda stuck in the “old school”. I don’t get this feeling from Carragher, Henry or other ex players playing in Keanes day. There is of course something to take with you from the older days, but Im not sure it would completely work with todays youth; not because they are weaker or more sensitive, but simply they are different. Different times today, and I think Roy Keane is still stuck in his era of doing things.

@thehumblegent: I pray to God that Roy’s agent doesn’t hear this and let Roy know what Darragh’s said. It could absolutely destroy Roy. Thoughts with Roy.

@Homelander-compV: U can’t afford him

@paulpurves484: Darragh’s bang on .

@kyleys6294: Dmac will only employ yes men

@mrpotato442: Keane will be devastated to hear this.

@simontabony: Everyone sniping DM for his opinion but he’s not wrong. The prima Donna mentality moved from the prem down the leagues long ago.

@user-rn8si3bo5w: These players need a bit of Roy Keane.

@A544N85: He’s spot on

@joegugg4129: Nowadays players go to their agents if they can not handle criticism

@barrytaylor1842: I don’t think Roy Keane will be losing too much sleep over this. MacAnthony seems to be a poor man’s Simon Jordan, but at least Simon talks sense.

@Gareth-dq3lg: Roy is really worried about his comments lose sleep lol Roy is making so much money from sky and ITV

@nevillecharlton8260: I bet you Keano’s feelings are hurt

@interstellarbeatteller9306: Maybe that’s why Peterborough haven’t progressed since Darragh took over?

@monkey271070: Quick answer is….Roy Keane wouldn’t apply for manger of Peterborough

@gazurtoids1: Would never have Keane as manager because he’s too busy with Darren Ferguson on a managerial merry-go-round for the past 15yrs or more …..he will he won’t he will he won’t

@CampslewTraining: roy wouldnt take that job … behave urself….

@itstherefsfault7083: Roy be gutted, who is this waffler anyway

@jonnyhull7860: Keano gutted about this im sure hes not gonna lose any sleep peterbough are shite so why would he go if he wanted to manage again

@jackmack-ov7nd: Roy Keane is a failed manager and players at several clubs and the Ireland setup detested him. Those are facts. He was run from every club he managed. Don’t see why there are so many triggered fan boys below unable to accept that Keane is not wanted as a manger by anyone

@jayTPthepostman: He’s right tho ️ this is why we hear all this “lost the dressing room” nonsense. You can’t have the animals running the zoo ️

@KarLetroN: There is something wrong with your brain if you can’t see what Darragh’s point is regarding Keane.

@martincummings7886: Darragh is absolutely spot on as usual..!! Him and Simon Jordan are the only 2 in the Talksport media spinroom and personal agenda punditry that speak the truth..!!

@jamiepoole5193: Macanthony…. Wanna be hard man

@Holy000: We all know its because they wre both ego maniacs and it would end in catastrophe! Its clear after 1min of talking this guy is all show! Heal ur trauma dude lifes much easier

@GavCardRipz: Keane got us promoted to the premier league, has Peterborough been in the premier league? No they always go back to league one under your ownership . Bet his absolutely gutted you won’t employ hij

@slebon622: Hey Darragh you cant even afford to pay the Tshirt Roy has on.

@hotdogwalks: roy is class why would he go to peterboro lol silly man

@callummurray209: Unpopular opinion – darragh’s an upgrade on Simon jordan

@markproctor3100: Sounded to me as much of a dig at modern players as a dig at Keane But I’m sure Roy will be very upset

@user-ic1oe4li2i: MacAnthony, you better not bump into Roy Keane on a dark night on a country road. Because Roy would want to have a wee chat with you about your comments. Sticking with Darren Ferguson after loosing in 2 playoff has brought you lost of success I’m looking forward to Peterborough making the playoffs for a 3rd season and not making it to Wembley again. I’m sure Roy will will bitterly disappointed this season when you fail again to get out of league one
