Oxford United have fans amused with ‘sensational’ announcement video on Josh McEachran extending his stay with the club.
Josh McEachran has been a key player for them, and is now staying for longer with the U’s, who won promotion to the Championship for the first time in 25 years.
And the way the club made the news known to fans was simply brilliant and it features John Terry. Right at the end of the clip as seen below, it shows a snippet of his chat on the Up Front with Simon Jordan YouTube channel.
In it, he reveals he led a mutiny at Chelsea against former manager Andre Villas-Boas and his decision to seat him in economy on a long-haul flight while the club’s younger players were placed in first class.
‘We get on the plane and I’m sitting in economy on a 13-hour flight,’ Terry said on Up Front with Simon Jordan.
‘And we’ve got Josh McEachran, Nathaniel Chalobah, a couple of other young players all in first class. And this was part of AVB going “no player is bigger than me, everyone’s the same”.
‘It turns out Lamps is flying out in first class and I’m flying back in first class. So if you fly out in first, you come back in economy, but basically it wasn’t good enough.
‘So, I’m going on the plane “no, we’re not going anywhere until these young players go back in economy and the first team players, that have built this club to where we are today, go back in first”.
‘We’re on the plane, people were up and down, AVB comes up “what’s the problem?” I go, “well, we’re not going anywhere until the young players move”. And to be fair to the young players, they’re going “this is really uncomfortable, we’ll go back”. And I’m going “no, it’s not your decision, he has to own it”.’
Terry said he and the other senior players wouldn’t have allowed the plane to take off with them on it, and admitted Villas-Boas ‘failed instantly’ to make a positive first impression.
‘This is one of his first things in front of everyone,’ Terry added.
‘In the end, it spun. First team players go first, younger players go economy. That’s how it should be. These younger players are striving to be where we’ve got, and he tried to make a statement.
‘He came in and he failed instantly, because I promise you the plane wasn’t going. If it was going, it would have gone without myself, Frank and Didier.’

CLUB STATEMENT:
Oxford United are delighted to announce Josh McEachran has extended his contract with the club, which will see the midfielder remain for the 2024/25 season.
McEachran signed for United at the start of last seasonβs promotion campaign, playing 24 times in the league and 34 times across all competitions.
The 31-year-old played a pivotal role as the club clinched promotion to the Championship for the first time in 25 years, featuring in one of the play-off semi-finals and in the victory over Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley.
Starting his career at Chelseaβs youth academy, McEachran has a wealth of experience throughout the English football leagues and in Europe, and he will look to continue to bring his qualities to the team in the Championship.
Speaking to the club after resigning, he said: βIβm absolutely delighted to extend my stay at Oxford United.
βBeing a local boy from Oxford, I know what this club means to everyone in the area, and it was amazing to see the city get behind the team in what was such a special season.
βNow, I canβt wait to take part in the Championship with Oxford and see what we can achieve.β
Des Buckingham, Oxford United Head Coach, said: βWe are delighted to have Josh remain at Oxford United. Josh played an important part in our team last season, particularly in the run-in as we pushed for the play-offs and then on to Wembley.
βHis ability and experience were crucial and we will be looking for Josh to bring those qualities again for the 2024/25 campaign.β
Ed Waldron, Head of Recruitment, said: βWe are really pleased to have Josh with us for at least another season.
βOver the past 12 months, Josh has not only shown what a good player he is, but heβs also a fantastic person and quickly became a key figure in helping build the culture we want at the Club.
βHeβs spent the majority of his career at Championship level or above and we believe he can bring a lot to the team for our first year back in the Championship.β
