Number of times Scottish Premiership teams have been selected by Sky Sports in 2020/21

We’ve taken a look at the number of times Scottish Premiership teams have been selected by Sky Sports in the 2020/21 season.

All 12 teams in the division was picked by the TV broadcaster (in the league) up until the end of the campaign.

There was however a lot of fans that fumed at how many times the Old Firm clubs were selected, whilst the other teams were ignored. The stats here really go to show just who Sky’s target audience really are.

In 2018, the SPFL struck a five-year deal for Sky to become the sole broadcaster having shared rights with BT Sport.

The deal, which started for this term, is for up to 48 top-flight leagues games to be shown each season. Sky Sports ended up showed 41 of a possible 48 Scottish Premiership matches.

Sky failed to take up their full allocation, leaving football fans were frustrated with the lack of coverage of the relegation battle in the final weeks of the season.

Hamilton’s big encounter with Ross County during the week wasn’t broadcast and neither was any of the final day action from the bottom six.

Sky Sports declined to comment when The Scotsman asked why the broadcaster did not show 48 games.

When approached, the organisation said that they had shown more Scottish football than ever before with all 12 teams featured in the first month of the season when 13 fixtures were live.

In a “major deal” between Sky Sports and the SPFL, all Premiership matches were made available to season ticket holders via club channels this past season.

A similar deal will continue into next season with all games not shown by the broadcaster available on PPV (pay-per-view).

Sky Sports showed the two-legged Premiership play-off final between Dundee and Kilmarnock, the first-leg took place on Thursday at Dens Park with an 8.15pm kick-off and then the second leg on Monday just gone.

The SPFL acquired the rights to the quarter-final and semi-final of the play-off back from Sky last summer and agreed a deal with the BBC earlier this month for the broadcaster to screen those games for the next five seasons.

Rangers have been shown live on Sky Sports a total of 20 times when it comes to their unbeaten Scottish Premiership campaign.

Celtic were shown live on Sky Sports a total of 18 times when it comes to their dismal Scottish Premiership campaign.

How did the others fare?

Aberdeen – 8 times
Hibernian – 8 times
Kilmarnock – 6 times
Motherwell – 5 times
St Johnstone – 4 times
Hamilton – 4 times
Dundee United – 4 times
Ross County – 3 times
Livingston – 3 times
St Mirren – 1 time
No Rangers or Celtic – 7

Plenty of SPFL fans have took to social media to demand that Scottish football gets back to the BT Sports days.

There was plenty of reaction as the number of times Scottish Premiership teams have been selected by Sky Sports in 2020/21 is revealed…

@Gogsie6: I wonder how much profit the club’s made from their club TV channels this season? Would be interesting to see if they could work and market those into a sustainable model and get sky fucked

@CraigJShields: It really is a joke, especially when they’re not using games they’ve paid for.

@craigj1976: Absolute joke. This is what going with Sky gets you.

@BatuMack: I don’t like sky. But they give money to the game. Not many people want to watch Killie v St Mirren, that’s the honest truth of it. Rangers and Celtic are the only reason we have a TV deal.

@afinebalance43: They could show all 48 games and have a game every week in the same slot. That would boost the viewing figures straight away. It a disgrace they have 48 games all over their marketing the show far fewer. It’s a rip off

@Daniel_RHughes: Of those 7 games, 6 nvolved Aberdeen or Hibs. Smaller clubs totally fucked over. Sky’s coverage is a total joke.

@HBullpen: No real issues with the dominance of 2 teams, they bring the money in. But nothing yesterday? And 7 games short? Has it worked well for the “smaller” teams earning cash this year via their own TV deals and would more on Sky have affected that?

@philskelly: Only one St Mirren game? No big fan of the buddies but that is ridiculous

@saints_fan_2004: Yeah a dead rubber game which meant both sides didnt have any reason to full on fight, potentially showing why they decided not to show any more games

@MattyJann: It’s almost like the most entertaining games get shown the most? Bastards!

@Mcgrandles71: Our best season for 3 decades and 1 game on Sky. 🙈🇾🇪
