Newcastle mock Arsenal from fans’ chants to cheeky post-match interviews and tweets

Newcastle took to mock Arsenal from fans’ chants to cheeky post-match interviews and tweets after sealing a place in the Carabao Cup Final.

Anthony Gordon went full Erling Haaland, fans reminds Mikel Arteta of his comments about how different the ball is after defeat in the first leg, with Newcastle having the last laugh.

The home crowd inside St James’ Park could be heard singing “Mikel Arteta, it must be the ball” and “He’s going to cry in a minute.”

The Carabao Cup semi final second leg saw goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon extended the Magpies’ aggregate advantage and sealed their place in the Wembley final on March 16th.

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon on Sky Sports: “It feels amazing. A proper team performance and we got the win. Our fans are never in question, they make it so difficult for the opposition and we did it the right way.

“We had a game plan we thought would work. Everyone knows we press. It is important for us to stay humble now. It will be a big occasion but it’s so far away.”

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “We felt good going into the game after the result in the first leg but we knew the first goal was always going to be massive. If they got the first it would have got really tense I imagine, so I’m glad we got that.

“Everyone knows we don’t change much. We are always going to press and try to put teams under pressure. The gaffer altered it a little bit, I played inside a bit more, and they struggled with it on the counter attack because they’ll couldn’t really pick me and Murph up and Alex [Isak] does what Alex does. I think the gaffer deserves all the credit.

“I have been involved in some great moments with the club, in the Champions League where we have won big games here [at St James’ Park], but that game was probably my best moment so far. It was probably the biggest game of my career so far, a semi-final, and it will be my first club appearance at Wembley. I’m so excited.

“I live for those moments and these games, it is where I am at my best, when there is the most pressure.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to Sky Sports: “We had momentum in the first half and didn’t capitalise. They scored immediately after and the momentum shifts. We needed a goal early in the second half and we didn’t get that and the opportunity passes.

“They have been more efficient than us in the boxes and that is the difference in the tie. You need to be on the day very efficient that is what takes you close to winning trophies and today we weren’t, Today is painful and tomorrow a different day.”

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes on Sky Sports: “Unbelievable performance from everyone and we must thank the fans as well. Here we go, another final for the club and hopeful we can win this one.

“I felt anxious before the game, big game, Arsenal a top, top team but when we play like that we become an amazing team.

“Play like that and we can dream big. It would be amazing to get a trophy, it is my dream to do this.

“Isak is the best striker these days for me. For me, the manager is amazing. He deserves the credit.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to Sky Sports: “It was a great night for us. It was a tough game but tactically we were good. The intention was to be aggressive and sometimes when you do that it doesn’t always work. Today it did. I thought it helped to solidify our plan. We had to retreat at times but we were always in the game.

“The work [on the game plan] started on Monday, which is quick. The Champions League last year helped us to work on those two-day turnarounds. We do tweak things depending on the opposition. We felt we needed more height in the team, we wanted solidity at the back and we had to change in order to win the game.

“The players followed the instruction to the letter, they deserve the credit. Fabian [Schar] had big distances to cover in his job, tracking Declan Rice whether he dropped low or went wide or went central. At times he went right across the pitch. He is a good athlete and is very capable of doing it.

“We wanted to get pressure on them [William Saliba and Gabriel] and in order to do that we had to get bodies in the right areas and press high – that is how we decided to do it.

“You know you are playing against elite players and one mistake can make things difficult. We had to be ourselves, be front foot. If not then it can quickly be 1-0 and 2-0 and then you are on the back foot.

“We had to work on set plays as their set play threat is so high. In the reverse fixture there were some moments where we got a bit lucky. Again our team selection was based on having height, especially without Joelinton, we needed Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Sven Botman. We defended the set plays really well today.

“It is huge [to get back to Wembley]. The first appearance there was a bit unexpected, but the club we want to be we have to be there regularly, so it’s not a surprise. We are there on merit, our run has not been easy this year, we’ve faced four Premier League teams, so we have done the hard yards.

“Hopefully we can learn from the last experience and improve our performance.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m really pleased. We had a really long wait between the ties, a long time to think about our lead and had a lot of discussions but I am just delighted with the way we played. I’m delighted with how we handled the occasion and managed the performance, so pleased to be through to the final.

“We wanted to be ourselves. Attack, press high, everything we always want to do, we tried to do and implement it. Arsenal are a very hard team to press, there’s a lot of movement and rotations of players, but the players executed it excellently. I was really pleased with that aspect of our game today.

“I thought we counter attacked very well today too. There was a lot of energy in the side, it was much better than the weekend against Fulham. A great win.

“We have come a long way since then [the 2023 final v Manchester United] – the Champions League does that to you, it is so testing and unique. Naturally for the big games a lot of the players have been there before, and we are used to the quick turnarounds and work smarter.

“There is a good feeling about the squad. We are tight on numbers but big on energy. I would love to think we can go to Wembley and perform better than we did previously.”

Newcastle defender Dan Burn talking to Sky Sports: “It was a good reaction from the weekend and just buzzing to be back at Wembley. You have to trust the manager and what he tells you to do.”

Team-mate Kieran Tripper, also on Sky Sports: “Arsenal do game management a lot and we did the same. If we stick to the game plan we will go far as a team. It means everything to reach the final. We have had the experience before.

“The first time there was a lot of emotion and now we know how to handle that. The ticket stuff was carnage and it takes a lot of the energy out of you.”

@GarySmithJnr: I don’t particularly like Newcastle, but seeing Arsenal get humbled is brilliant. 🤣

@TheGunnersD3n: Seriously don’t mind losing but it’s a total disgrace to have played over 120 minutes without scoring a single goal against Newcastle. That’s atrocious we are far better than that. #CarabaoCup #NEWARS

@BuzzingGunners: Fair enough 🤣 We have no rivalry with Newcastle, hope they go on to win the cup. Better team than us.

@chuckdavie: Not even worth dissecting it. Looked knackered, damage done in poor first leg. Well executed game from Newcastle, kudos to them. 10 days off for Arsenal now, use it wisely and come back focused 🔴⚪️
