National League managers among favourites for job at Southend

We continue our look at the top six favourites for the Southend United managers job…

SOL CAMPBELL

Odds according to Sky Bet: 10/1

Sol Campbell was recently the manager of League Two side Macclesfield Town, but last week resigned from the role after not being paid for the final four months he was at the club.

He miraculously managed to keep the Silkmen in the Football League, despite taking over when relegation seemed an almost certainty, and went onto post a 26.7% win ratio.

His work at his previous club has been noticed by Tony Cascarino, who told talkSPORT: “To keep them up was pretty much a minor miracle. I’ve lauded Phil Parkinson at Bolton when he got promoted when he was under a [transfer] embargo.

“He went down and he’s still their manager. He’s in a similar situation [to Campbell], imagine coming in here and none of us have been paid and we’re having to do a show.

“Sol had only lost two of his last 10 games. So when I heard the news midweek, and it was apparently by both parties mutual consent, I was stunned with the circumstances that Sol had thrown himself into.”

GARETH AINSWORTH

Odds according to Sky Bet: 8/1

Gareth Ainsworth has been Wycombe boss since 2012 and guided Wanderers to promotion in 2018, and to their highest ever position of 1st in League One in September 2019.

He is a former player of Lincoln, he made 83 appearances and scored 37 goals. Other clubs to have played for are Northwich, Preston, Cambridge, Port Vale, Wimbledon, Walsall, Cardiff, QPR and Wycombe.

Ainsworth is a very attack-minded manager, and likes his teams to play aggressively and with a high press.

PHIL PARKINSON

Odds according to Sky Bet: 5/2

Phil Parkinson is currently unemployed after resigning as manager of Bolton Wanderers with the club in crisis at the time. They were in administration since May, were handed a 12 point deduction for their first season back in League One and were forced to postponed one of their fixtures due to welfare concerns for their young players they had no choice putting out each game.

Parkinson has previously managed Bradford City, Charlton Athletic, Hull City and Colchester United, all between 2003 and 2016.

He’s also played for Southampton, Reading and Bury.

HIS MANAGERIAL HONOURS:

Colchester United
.
League One runners up: 2005–06 season

Charlton Athletic
.
Reached the League One playoffs: 2009-10 season

Bradford City
.

Reached FA Cup quarter finals: 2014-15 season
Reached the League One playoffs: 2015-16 season

ADAM BARRETT

Odds according to Sky Bet: 2/1

Adam Barrett is a former Southend United player currently a First Team Development Coach at Millwall.

He had two spells with the Shrimpers one between 2004 and 2010 and the second between 2015 and 2017.

Other clubs to have played for are Leyton Orient, Plymouth, Mansfield, Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Gillingham and Wimbledon.

He is tipped by former players Anton Ferdinand and Ben Coker to take the job, saying he’s perfect for it.
