Max Rushden makes a cheeky jibe at Newcastle United following their formal complaint about referee Paul Tierney at the weekend.
Eddie Howe’s side reportedly hit out about the refereeing standards in the Premier League following their defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Reds ran out 3-1 winners against Newcastle last Thursday at Anfield, but Newcastle have been left unhappy with some of the decisions in the match.
They felt Liverpool’s opening goal shouldn’t have been allowed because Isaac Hayden was down on the ground with a head injury as play continued.
Then in their 4-0 home defeat to Man City on Sunday, the North East outfit were left wondering why, despite a VAR check, they weren’t given a penalty when goalkeeper Ederson collided with Ryan Fraser in the box.
Newcastle were also not pleased with a decision in their 4-0 defeat at Leicester City that saw them give away a spot kick.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have lodged a formal complaint to the Premier League over the standard of officiating in the top flight.
The report goes on to say that they are seeking clarity over several decisions, including the one that contributed to Liverpool’s win last week.
Before Diogo Jota’s goal was allowed to stand, the Reds were losing 1-0 thanks to a goal from Jonjo Shelvey.
Not long after that, Liverpool doubled their lead with Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet before Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long-range effort in the closing stages sealed the comfortable victory.
Liverpool themselves felt they were on the receiving end of some questionable decisions in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Referee Paul Tierney was criticised by Jurgen Klopp for several decisions, including a penalty appeal on Jota, a challenge from Harry Kane and an Andy Robertson red card, however the FA has since reviewed Klopp’s post-match comments about referee Tierney and will not be taking any further action.
As mentioned, Max Rushden makes a cheeky jibe at Newcastle following the formal referee complaint, tweeting: “Can the referees make a formal complaint about Newcastle’s footballing standards?”

TWITTER REACTION:
@MattBarpea: It’s a fair point
@Bob_Helpful: As a season ticket holder there, I’d happily join the refs in some kind of group action if that is an option
@abnettNUFC1988: Can we complain about you journalist standards?
@wrighty1707: @maxrushden is a grade A knob and you can tell he works for TalkShite
@CiaranMcQuaid2: Another genius who think good refereeing is only for good teams and shit teams should just put up with it. The last 2 weeks or so have been an absolute scandal.
@TimNiceButDim3: It’s more important to make a complaint about their moral standards
@wardy22589: Used to like you
@Fightmilk4BBB: because we aren’t a top six team like the mighty spurs we can’t complain about the standard of officials. take you bias agenda to the government or the Premier league who allowed it to happen, just baiting fans who have been shit on for years, thought u were better than that man
@MickMaldini: Doesn’t matter about @nufc footballing standards, its about a fair crack at whatever is to come, and that has not happened for3 games running when blatantly obvious the decisions were wrong. So wrong it seems colluded. And for that matter its for a referee/var to fairly officiate the rare moments that @nufc can progress in a game. So forgetting your comedic little soundbites, i think you know this. Let ls play fair max, used to like yee.
@BobbyDialUp: You’re gonna regret this one 😂😂😂😂😂
@Bristol_jack79: Wait till Newcastle are in the championship there even worse!
@AllanMawson: Here we go again
@Hayley_Harra: Eh? Having a shit defence doesn’t mean we automatically lose our right to challenge the standard of refereeing. We need all the help we can get at the minute and nowt is going our way. No point in VAR if it’s not used #NUFC Happy Christmas!
@WillHay108: Is that relevant? A bad decision is a bad decision and all teams should want to fight against poor standards of refereeing. Poor attempt at a “gotcha” though, very lazy.
@agbnufc_: So we should just accept terrible decisions because we’re pretty bad? What a ridiculous way of looking at it. UK media never cease to amaze me.
@Nikos_NUFC: Yeah lets just accept corrupt referees because we aren’t very good at football. Typical anti #NUFC agenda.
@ForeverAYellow: Max is right like
all the decisions are wrong – but it isn’t bias or cheating, it’s just a bit shit.
