Footballer who played for just £1 a week leaves National League North club after European interest

Footballer Adam Nowakowski – who played for just £1 a week – leaves National League North club Bradford (Park Avenue) after European interest.

The fan favourite, club legend and all round nice guy, confirmed on Monday night that he would be leaving them.

Avenue’s home fixture with AFC Telford United marked Nowakowski’s last game for the foreseeable future.

CLUB STATEMENT:

We can confirm today that fan favourite, club legend and all round nice guy, Adam Nowakowski is leaving the club for the foreseeable future.

Adam leaves to take up a position abroad with Nestle where he holds down a full time career.

The club wishes to pay our thanks to Adam, who has been an incredible servant, particularly over these last few seasons, playing for us for just £1 a week!

On his departure, Mark Bower said this of the ex Harrogate and Darlington player: Adam is a legend here, to not only start, but to continue playing for a quid a week is an amazing gesture. For me, he has been a real stalwart of this club, can play in a variety of positions and always gave me, the staff, the lads, and most importantly the fans, 100%. I am sure he will be missed by everyone at the club, the first team and the fans. He will always be welcome back at Bradford (Park Avenue) and we will hold his registration so that if he does become available we can bring him back.

Clubman of the year, Neil Fawcett was equally as enthusiastic about Nowakowski: What a player Adam has been for us over the years with his commitment to the club

Some of the banter on the team coach will stay legendary, away trips won’t be the same without the king on his throne!

Another fan, Lewis Sale said: Adam has been an integral part of the squad in his two spells at the club. His experience, personality and quality has been vital, both on and off the field. And, agreeing to play for a £1 a week is evidence of the person ‘Nova’ is. He’s an unforgettable and irreplaceable character and will be sadly missed, but I’d like to wish him all the very best and success for the future.

Adams team mate, Oli Johnson said: I’ve played with Adam since 2016 so he’s been a constant in my time at BPA. He’s the strangest guy I know but also one of the best. It won’t be the same without him. Good luck going forward mate!

Tonight marks Adam’s last game for the foreseeable future, we hope you are down here to send him off!

Everyone at the club wishes Adam well, best of luck Nova!

Bradford (Park Avenue) saw their 2019/20 season cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, however the Football Association decided not to have any clubs at Step 3 to 7 promoted or relegated, which acted as a lifeline for Bradford Park Avenue who stay up following a finish at the bottom of the table, taking 20 points from 33 games.

A club statement posted on the 8th of August 2020 read: “The Avenue are delighted to have signed what must be the best value for money player in any league in the country for the new season!

“In an act of incredible generosity and demonstration of his enjoyment of being in a Bower/Boshell dressing room, Adam offered to help the club during these testing times by signing for us for the 20/21 season for just £1 a week.

|The current pandemic could effect our ability to generate income on match days through stadium attendance limits, club house revenues, reduced numbers of away fans wanting to travel, plus raffle and program income.

“We have been incredibly successful in attracting corporate sponsorship to the club, our incredible fans continue to be hugely generous, and this act of selflessness from one of our players is truly amazing.

“Adam offers us huge benefit from a playing and dressing room impact, loved by the other players for his infectious personality and by Mark and Danny for his attitude and versatility. Able to play through the spine of the team in defence, midfield and attack, Adam’s versatility will give us options tactically, that our small squad will need during certain games and certain times during games.

“Adam, can we simply say, you are gentleman and many thanks.”

Mark Bower said at the time: “Adam’s been a really important player for us for the past two seasons playing in several positions and always having an impact in games.

“His versatility and personality have made him a really popular member of the squad both within the dressing room and amongst the supporters.

“He has gone above and beyond in committing to us next season and we are delighted that he has done so.”

Adam Nowakowski also added in the statement at the time: “I’m pleased to have signed for Mark and Danny for another season at Bradford (Park Avenue), I enjoy the style of football that they play and they always create a great dressing room.

“On top of that I wanted to give something back to non-league football that has been so good towards me over the years. The pandemic means that there lots of financial unknowns this season, not just for the Avenue but all non league clubs, so I decided to offer to sign for the club on £1 per week to help support the club during this difficult period.

“I cant wait to get started and I know all of the squad are looking forward to seeing supports return (under safe government guidelines) following a long period without football. #GreenWhiteArmy.”

He did it again for the seasons that followed, but now his time in non league as come to an end. Below was his last interview…
