Aldershot Town confirm permanent appointment of new manager

Aldershot Town confirm the permanent appointment of Ross McNeilly as their new manager having been acting an interim in recent weeks.

The 38-year-old, who spent nearly five years as the National League club’s academy boss, has guided them to five wins in eight games since Mark Molesley was got rid of in October.

They say they have a “view to extend” McNeilly’s contract further, with the Shots currently sitting 15th, with 26 points from 21 games played, eight points above the drop zone and seven from the playoff places.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Aldershot Town Football Club are delighted to announce the permanent appointment of Ross McNeilly as First-Team Manager until the end of the season with a view to extend.

McNeilly spent almost five years as The Shots Academy Manager before being given the opportunity to take interim charge of first-team affairs following the departure of Mark Molesley.

Under his interim leadership, The Shots have won five out of the eight games, picking up four clean sheets in the process.

Chairman Shahid Azeem said: “The board are delighted to be able to announce Ross as permanent First-Team Manager of Aldershot Town.”

“The performances and winning record during his Interim spell stood out amongst the high-quality pool of candidates that applied. He’s come through the Academy, knows the football club and the players want to play under him.”

“The Board are very excited to have Ross in charge until the end of the season where we will sit down and discuss plans for the future beyond this year. Football is always talked about as a results-based industry and Ross has produced those results and certainly deserves a ‘shot’!”

Head of Football Operations Terry Brown said: “As well as the results Ross has achieved, we’ve been really impressed with his man-management. He’s taken to senior management quickly and gained the respect of the dressing room and the players.”

“We’re all excited to now press on with the rest of the season and build on the fantastic results Ross and his team have achieved so far.”

@jimmy_g87: They waited until most supporters were on board with it, was inevitable. No denying performances and results have for the most part been better. Interested in how Ross/Terry/The Club go about strengthening the squad. For me we have to sign Vincent permanently for starters.

@TylerChambers_: By far the best manager I came up against at U23 level – a nice guy as well. Good to see someone given the opportunity coming from a development background and the club not just appointing ‘a name’ 👏🏻

@ChrisATFC87: He’s done alright but this isn’t the answer

@ShaunBrown995: Very well deserved after 5 wins from 8, especially when (of the losses) one was away to Wrexham and another was a complete outlier (Torquay). Onwards and upwards hopefully with the Woking games coming up in a few weeks time! 🔴🔵
