PATERSON STATEMENT:
“I would like to say what an honour and privilege it was to be Burton Albion Manager.
“I thank the Chairman, Ben Robinson MBE, for trusting me with the opportunity and supporting me in my role on a daily basis.
“My remit was to keep the club in League One and I am delighted the club remains in the division, with the foundations to improve and continue the club’s success.
“I would like to thank all the players and staff for their hard work and trust. Walking in to a football club on your own can be hard, but everyone made me feel instantly welcome and I am so grateful to all.
“There were tough periods, but we came through as a collective with dignity and humility, meeting the objective of staying in the division with two vital wins out of the last four games. It was a reward for trusting our process, never giving up, and being honest and good people. This was my proudest achievement in football and I enjoyed everything the job and responsibility entailed.
“I leave knowing I pushed the players to be better and worked hard to improve them, no matter how small the margins, which is a big part of my work and process. I was very proud to be able to field some young, homegrown players in big matches and help them in the early stages of their careers.
“Thank you to the fan base for continuously supporting the players, home and away. Burton Albion is a proud Staffordshire club, with its culture and core values being one for the community and supporters. I hope I have played a small part in helping the club to move forward on its fantastic journey and I wish everyone connected with Burton Albion the best of wishes for the future.
“My journey as a manager has just begun and I look forward to my next challenge with great determination and excitement.”

In April 2024, Martin Paterson was slammed for comments he made about his own club’s supporters after going winless in 10 after defeat to Oxford United.
The U’s won 4-0 victory to put them back into the League One playoff places at the time.
Burton boss Martin Paterson said post-match to BBC Derby Sport: “It lands on me as I’m the manager. I accept full responsibility for that performance and the performance was unprofessional in my opinion. We allowed a team that I had identified as being really dangerous on transitions with their speed in the outside areas to attack us. I know we prepare the group properly and we were aware of all their threats. The organisation is there but ultimately inside a game when pressure comes there seems to be a massive issue at home.
“I don’t think the players look like they enjoy playing here if I’m honest. They look in most moments scared and it shows. On the opposite side when we are 4-0 down we start to move the ball well because the pressure is off if we are being brutally honest.
“I have to keep my dignity and front it up as I’m the manager but I’m bitterly disappointed to have a performance like that.”

He went on: “I will never back down from a challenge – that’s my nature. I know regardless of what happens that I come in every day and work my socks off. I know that I give the players everything they need to be successful. The team should be safe already but we are not. I’m a man that won’t shy away from that. I clap the crowd, win, lose or draw. I never put anyone else under the boss and I take responsibility which you have to as a manager. But there are certain things you can legislate for and some you can’t. I don’t instruct, coach or manage players to do certain things in certain moments.
“Today the atmosphere was not good and it hasn’t been good for a while but I know that I give my all. I work hard and continue to do so.”
Paterson said: “At the moment we prefer playing away. There are issues at home, that’s obvious. I know I’m giving everything, and we know there are periods at home when we have territory and good control and we just get transitioned on and they score and now we have a mountain to climb.
“It now comes down to mentality and who can play under pressure. We are in a struggling moment and we need to find something to ignite the group, start the flame. It’s a question of the group and getting them to have the right mentality.”
This is what Twitter users said as the favourites to become new Burton manager emerge while Martin Paterson leaves months after criticising fans…

@Tom821992: #BAFC never wanted Patterson to stay but a full rebuild now needed on and off the pitch. Maybe to late looking at the clubs in League 1 this year but we will see. Players and coaches haven’t been good enough for years. Recruitment poor, injuries constant. I’m off to the pub.
Challenged by coming in mid-January with a group that was largely put together by other people.
All the same, the amount of 5-3-2s and 5-4-1s can’t be ignored. Terrible last 2 months that almost got Burton relegated.Fractured relationship with fans. It’s needed to end.#BAFC https://t.co/vZOvSY8eYZ
