Jack Wilshere and some of his Luton players were held back when confronting fans after the 1-1 draw with Burton on Saturday afternoon.
Fabio Tavares’ stoppage-time cancelled out Nahki Wells’s 13th minute opener, and come full time, Town’s players were booed off.
The result sees Luton sitting 10th in League One, with 46 points after 33 games played, 6 points from the playoff places. Burton meanwhile are 20th with 36 points from 32 games played, 2 points above the drop zone.

Well I called it around 70 minutes… 1-0 and they will go get a late goal and it will turn nasty. Exactly what happened. A poor home performance on a game we had to win. Nasty scenes at the end!

Wilshere stopped Kal Naismith from confronting one fan, but the manager also had words himself with a supporter as he made his way down the tunnel.
When asked for his reaction to what he witnessed, Wilshere said, per Luton Today: “First of all, I understand their frustrations, I do. I’ve said that a lot, but right now we need them, we need them. I understand their frustrations, but it’s not for a lack of the players trying. They’re giving everything every single day, we work really, really hard to try and win games, to try and make supporters happy.
“I think you can see that the players are really lacking belief, they’re lacking confidence. It’s difficult then when in the first minute there’s booing, because we’re trying to create an identity, we’re trying to create a way of playing that we want to move forward with which we’ve done really well I think. Some games we’ve been excellent, I think we need to be more consistent, Cardiff wasn’t good enough, Wigan wasn’t good enough, we understand that, but right now, everyone needs to be together, everyone needs to stick together.
“We have to accept where we are, we’re in League One, that’s happened. I understand where the club was, I understand that supporters want to get back there, but we have to accept that we’re in League One and that’s the challenge. We have no right just to turn up and win games and expect that we can just do that as we can’t, you can clearly see that at the moment that is not the case. I doubt at any level that is the case and especially at this level. I look at teams that have come down from the Championship, this is a tough league where you have to fight for every single thing you get, every single thing to get a point, to get three points, to win a duel, whatever it is.

The 1-1 draw with Burton Albion yesterday was a flashpoint as much as a result – and Jack Wilshere faced both sides of the emotional reaction…

“We’re trying to do that, I think you can see that in the performance from the players today, I didn’t think we started that well, but we had intent, we wanted to play a certain way, a little bit slow at the start where we couldn’t quite find our rhythm, but then we had a little bit of rhythm.
“We scored and then we tried to hold on to the lead and that for me tells me that the players are lacking in confidence, lacking in belief.
“I have to get the right amount of challenge, the right amount of care. We challenged them at half time, we said, ‘boys that’s not who we were, go and get the next goal.’
“You can see they’re trying, they’re really trying, it’s hard for them right now and it’s frustrating, but it’s not through a lack of fight.
” I thought their efforts were outstanding today and we need to do better with the ball and be more confident, but I thought without doing that we controlled a lot of their long balls and second balls apart from that one chance where we switch off and it hurts.”
Here’s how social media users reacted after Jack Wilshere and Luton players had to be held back when confronting fans after the 1-1 draw with Burton…
@mindgey1279: The “project” manager has failed, write this season off. Dont know what was said to wilshere but he has to get down the tunnel and ignore it. Players not accountable, Gary Sweet only cares about Power court. Less than 2 years ago playing premier league football. Complete mess
@andysherry4: Time is up for JW, cannot react like no matter what. Tactics so wrong second half especially, 5 at the back v Burton. This just invites pressure and then the inevitable happens.
@LTFC_screech: JW obviously doesn’t resonate with the club. The players and staff hate the fans and visa versa. Need someone who can get the players running and fans cheering
@upthetown1989: The leader of the football club telling our fans to shut their fucking mouths. What a role model to the kids watching on
@ltfc_rhys: Saville having to drag wilshere away is beyond embarrassing…
@Hitesh_78_: Didnt go… I didn’t want to go. Disconnected. Disenchanted. Absolute rubbish.
@Pandamonium1881: Start of the end that one
@Stalte3: Wilshere: “Direct your anger towards me”. Also Wilshere when a fan directs their anger towards him “shut your fucking mouth”. Hasn’t got the minerals required.
@abboluton2: Couldn’t agree more , booing has never inspired a team or a manager to perform better. Abusing the manager is not Luton, it’s a preserve of that lot down the road. Blooms and Wiltshire inherited the worst recruitment in the history of our club
@chrisdalton1977: It’s a shame the only fight that Kal Naismith showed all game was wanting to fight a fan at the end! Disgusting from him and all the team!!
@jackski50742974: I am telling you sack him and sack the board that was an absolute disgrace
@TParton8: Time for JW to go the team is a shambles at the end players going at fans being sarcastic putting thumbs up by the tunnel JW has made fans hate this team just walk you have enough money you dont need a pay off
@LTFCblockF: Sack the board. Defund the trust – complicit in this.
