Billy Sharp ends retirement for AFC Rushden’s historic FA Cup tie with 300 goals in sight

Billy Sharp has come out of retirement to sign for AFC Rushden & Diamonds ahead of their first appearance in the FA Cup first round proper, returning to the area where he scored his first senior goals more than two decades ago.

The 40-year-old former Sheffield United captain joins the eighth-tier club before their trip to Burton Albion on Saturday 7 November, with kick-off at 3pm GMT. Diamonds confirmed the move on 1 November after Sharp announced his retirement in October.

The club have linked his arrival directly to James Clifton’s suspension and the cup tie, saying they want to see Sharp pull on the shirt “one final time”. His immediate task is to help Diamonds’ squad on its landmark cup day.

A return to where his goalscoring career took off

Sharp scored nine goals in 16 appearances while on loan from Sheffield United to the original Rushden & Diamonds in 2005. The club’s announcement recalls that his first career goal came during that spell.

There is an important distinction between the two clubs. The original Rushden & Diamonds folded in 2011; AFC Rushden & Diamonds were subsequently formed by supporters. Sharp’s link is to the town and its football history, while this is a new signing for the current club.

Diamonds’ announcement credits him with 299 career goals across 22 years. Another goal would take him to 300 on that published tally, adding a personal milestone to the club’s landmark cup occasion.

How the move came together

Manager Elliot Sandy had discussed the possibility before the signing was confirmed. The Northamptonshire Telegraph reported on 27 October that Sandy had spoken with chairman Rob Usher, initially in a half-joking conversation, before contact was made about Sharp coming out of retirement for the Burton tie.

The confirmed arrival turns that possibility into a selection option for Sandy. Clifton’s suspension is the immediate squad issue identified by the club; Sharp brings a very different level of senior experience into the group.

The experience Diamonds are adding

Sharp scored 129 goals in 377 appearances for boyhood club Sheffield United. His career also took him to Southampton, Scunthorpe, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Reading, Hull, LA Galaxy and Doncaster.

At Doncaster last season he made 45 appearances in all competitions and scored 14 goals, according to BBC Sport. His latest retirement announcement therefore came after a season in which he was still playing regularly and contributing goals.

Burton away on a historic cup day

Saturday’s tie is AFC Rushden & Diamonds’ first in the first round proper. It is the current supporter-founded club’s milestone, separate from the original club’s cup history.

The club’s published ticket information confirms the 7 November date, with general sale having opened on 31 October. Supporters planning to travel can check Diamonds’ official ticket guidance.

Sharp’s involvement remains subject to selection, but his return gives the occasion another clear storyline: a striker whose first goals came in Rushden now has the chance to help its supporter-owned successor make more FA Cup history.
