Everton and Aston Villa give long bans to fans this month after they were caught shouting racist abuse at matches earlier this season.
Raheem Sterling was playing at Villa Park when 54 year old Timothy Hyslop shouted a racist slur towards the footballer.
He made the offensive comments in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the 16th of October 2022.
After the game, Hyslop was taken into question by police and charged with a section 5 racially aggrieved public order offence.
On Tuesday the 17th of January 2023, Hyslop appeared in Birmingham Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty.
Hyslop was given a three year football ban order (FBO) and was also ordered to pay costs and fines totalling £538.
PC Stuart Ward, football hate crime officer at West Midlands Police, said: “This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. “Abusing anyone for the colour of their skin is disgusting and can never, ever be condoned.
“There is no place for racism in football or society in general. I would like to thank Aston Villa for their assistance during this investigation.”
PC Ward was appointed the UK’s first dedicated hate crime officer based within a football unit two years ago.

Raheem Sterling has previously opened up on receiving racist abuse at Chelsea in December 2018.
Sterling was abused when he was getting the ball back a ball in front of the Matthew Harding stand during Man City’s 2-0 Premier League loss at Stamford Bridge that year.
The Blues banned a fan for life after an investigation as well as handing out sanctions against five other supporters for their behaviour during the match, despite the Crown Prosecution Service deciding not to initiate any criminal prosecutions.
Sterling, who would have spoken with the abuser over the incident, said: ‘My main focus is to move away from the racial kind of thing and focus more on nurturing and feeding the youth, like myself growing up, and giving them a map to what world lies ahead and show them that they can manifest a lot of stuff if they just put the time in and look after themselves.’
In 2015, Chelsea fans were filmed getting onto a Paris metro and refused to let a black man board the carriage.
They were recorded chanting: ‘We’re racist, we’re racist and that’s the way we like it.’
Meanwhile, a fan of Everton was also found guilty for shouting racist abuse this week, but aimed it at a Leicester supporter during a Premier League match.
32 year old Matthew Gillespie was taken into custody at Goodison Park on the 5th of November and he had admitted to racially aggravated the public order at South Sefton Magistrates’ Court, being issued a three-year ban.
Gillespie was given a total fine of £470 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge in the amount of £140.
Merseyside Police said that a steward was present and that a police officer was on the scene to address the situation. Bit it was fellow fans that pointed him out to security. Everton lost the match 2-0.
Fans assisted them and Gillespie was taken into custody on suspicion of racially-aggravated public order.
Det Con Mike Volynchook said: “It is pleasing to see this outcome, which shows just how seriously police, football clubs and the courts take such hate crimes in our football stadia.
“Such abuse is not welcome here in Merseyside, and people like Gillespie do not represent the overwhelming majority of football fans in the region.”
An Everton Football Club spokesperson added the club has a “zero-tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination and harassment”.
