Fans slam decision to disallow Joelinton’s goal; ‘sh*thouse’ Jacob Murphy waves off Caleta-Car

Fans slam the decision to disallow Joelinton’s goal for handball and ‘sh*thouse’ Jacob Murphy waves off Duje Caleta-Car after his red card.

Newcastle United thought they took the lead on the 39th minute when the strike was disallowed by VAR because they didn’t have enough evidence to overturn Stuart Atwell’s decision at St Mary’s.

Joelinton was convinced he had put the away side ahead when he scored from six yards out just before the break.

He was deemed to have handled the ball after he brought it under control prior to his finish.

After Southampton players raised the matter, Atwell didn’t hesitate to blow his whistle immediately and it was ruled out, before Newcastle’s Joelinton got another goal in the second half, this time perfectly fine, however they go into the Carabao Cup second leg with a 1-0 aggregate rather than 2-0.

Many Magpies supporters thought that the ball had struck Joelinton’s body, not his hand. VAR examined the incident and concluded that there was not enough evidence to reverse their decision.

VAR came to Newcastle’s aid however midway through the second period when Adam Armstrong felt that he had scored for the hosts.

Although the ex-Newcastle player was able to score from close range, it appeared that Armstrong had handled the ball himself.

After being sent off in the cup semi final first leg, Jacob Murphy humbly waved goodbye to Duje Caleta-Car, what a sight it was.

Murphy was the focus of the clash, after he mocked Caleta-Car’s sending off.

In the 86th, the Croatian player was given a second yellow card. As the Southampton defender left the pitch, they locked eyes.

Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes tells Sky Sports: “We controlled the game but we missed big chances.

“It’s just the first game now we need to think about the next one. I’m proud of the team today.

“One goal is important, we could score more but most important was to be one-goal in front of Southampton.

“I want to thank Nick Pope I think he’s the best goalkeeper in the world.

“Let’s keep it going.”

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope tells Sky Sports: “I let one in and VAR helped us out.

“We’re happy with the defensive aspect of the game, we look solid at the back and the boys work hard to make it happen.”

On Joelinton’s goal: “Great finish, great team goal. It’s never easy when you come into a two-legged semi-final but you always want to get ahead and win the first leg.

“Every footballer wants to be part of, big semi-finals and delivering for fans.

“It’s something you dream of.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Sky Sports: “Tough game, both sides had their moments and had chances to win the game, but we know it’s only half time and there’s a long way to go.

“We created chances today, we weren’t clinical until the goal.

“It’s been a good day but there’s still a long way to go in the tie. I can’t be critical in any way. We defended well, Nick made some big saves again.

“The two saves he made were big moments. Adams’ one-on-one was at a huge time in the game when they were growing into it and the crowd were getting up but Nick stepped up and kept us in it.

“He’s been outstanding for us this year, the defence has played very well in front of him but when called upon he’s delivered for us.

“Pleased to win, that was our aim but we know 1-0 is delicate nothing is decided.

“We go back to St James’ with our fans behind us.”

Southampton boss Nathan Jones speaking to Sky Sports: “I am really proud of the level of performance. These are a top side, big physical and athletic. They have had time to recruit and recruited that way and they are a real tough side to play against.

“I thought we were excellent. They had a couple of big chances and we had a couple of big chances. For us to compete and be like we were it shows we have come a long way and in the second half we went after the game. We really stepped it up.

“We just lacked a little bit of quality in terms of wide areas, once we get that confidence and get one or two in we will be a different threat. I am really proud of them.”

Fans slam the decision to disallow Joelinton’s goal while ‘sh*thouse’ Jacob Murphy was praised as he waves off Caleta-Car…

@M4rkySp4rky2011: Cameras clearly show it hits his chest like, refs to lazy to check him the monitor. Whatever we move on

@Rob_Graha: Ball hits his thigh then his chest. It’s bouncing AWAY from his arm as it rises up past it.

@J1SWY: The Southampton players goal side of him didn’t claim a handball, so that decides it for me.

@MattM_9695: Shocking decision. No consistency in VAR what do ever. @fa

@kalib_downes: What’s he supposed to do?

@Noah_R_McCarthy: Definitely not a handball

@smccalden: VAR – “Not enough evidence to overturn the onfield decision” – Honestly in that case 99% of these hairline offside disallowed goals fall into this bracket too. Complete nonsense that an elbow can be millimetres ahead of a knee based on an angled camera 100yds+ away.

@alfielowings7: Hits his chest not hand, poor decision

@fairless_9: Just get rid of VAR at this point. They still get decisions wrong even with 10 replays in slow motion, pointless until the officials are held accountable and actually improve 🤷🏼‍♂️ #NUFC

@Woolfie_01: Another absolute shambles , get it gone

@ChrisAllen45: How!? 🤦🏻‍♂️ VAR is absolutely pointless. Fucking joke. #NUFC

@ConnorBromley: That’s a terrible decision 🙈

@C_Francis94: Fucking shock! Refs in this country are absolutely shite 😤

@mark_t0898: if refs want respect they should stop being useless

@kevcbrown: Murphy deserves a 10 year contract on 100k a week for this love it love it

@Dannyboy_785: Jacob Murphy just became a legend!!! #nufc

@Rob85777873Jack: That’s why we spent 12 million on him

@AlexNufc1997: He can stay another season for that.

@Skeets83: Best thing I’ve seen him do 😂

@Forbsey67: This is the level of petty I aspire to be

@GazBainbridge: I HOWLED at this… then I remembered I support #NUFC and I went into autopilot and assumed it would come back to bite us on the arse

@SkontoRigga: What a classless, shitty, utterly juvenile thing to do – And I enjoyed it immensely

@SamLovell91: Give this man a 10 year contract. Excellent shithousery 👋🏼
