Boos after Arsenal’s title hopes take damaging blow while Bournemouth boost European push

There were boos after Arsenal’s title hopes take a damaging blow while Bournemouth boost their European push with a 2-1 win.

Bournemouth went ahead on the 17th minute thanks to Eli Junior Kroupi. Alex Howell, an Arsenal reporter for BBC Sport, said that the Bournemouth fans could be heard singing ‘second again, ole ole’

On 35 minutes, Viktor Gyokeres’ well struck spot kick had Arsenal level. Premier League Match Centre said on the penalty awarded to Arsenal: “The referee’s call of penalty for handball was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Christie’s arm was raised away from his body.”

Midway through the second half, Viktor Gyokeres had a goal disallowed for offside. Then Alex Scott put the Cherries back in front, getting onto Evanilson’s ball on the edge of the box, and placed it past David Raya.

The BBC’s Alex Howell said: “There are Arsenal supporters near to where I am sitting who have headed up the stairs and into the concourse. They have seen enough.”

Bournemouth held on for a huge win, seeing them sit 9th in the Premier League with 45 points from 32 games played ahead of the 3pm kick offs. Arsenal however miss the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table, sitting 70 points after 32 games played, Man City are 2nd with 61 points from 20 games played.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports: “Disappointing. It’s a big punch in the face and it’s about how we react now. They are a team who haven’t lost for 11 games for a reason, they did a lot right.

“We were far from efficent. The first chance they had to attack the box, it’s a deflection, a bad defending action and it’s a goal. That’s something we have to recover from.

“The second half you expect a different game. We did a lot of strange things today.

“We have been very consistent. This can happen, this is football.”

On whether the players are hurting: “A lot. It has to hurt. They have to take it on the chin. You stand up and go for the fight or you’re out.

“It’s a big week. A lot at stake. We’re still in a good position in both competitions.”

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola told BBC Sport“We showed great personality to play in a big game and a big stadium. We’ve been at the level of the game. I’m very happy for the players.”

On 22 days without a game: “You are worried you lose the intensity of the competition. We started really well. We recovered some players. Physically we sustained the level of the game. We finished strong. We were coming from a lot of draws in a row.

“Alex [Scott] has been like this for many months. He was amazing today. He’s in such good form. I’m so happy for him. He’s worked a lot to be at this level.

“Defensively apart from the penalty we defended those [set-piece] situations. We were quite brave. A complete performance.

“It’s a matter of growing into the game. We had very good spells on the ball. We were finding good gaps in the middle.”

On their European hopes: “It’s difficult for us but it’s true that we are not far. There are many teams in a good run without losing. Whoever gets the final two spots will finish in a big run of games.”

Stewards forced to intervene after Arsenal fans vent fury at Bournemouth analysts

Here’s how fans reacted amid boos after Arsenal’s title hopes take a damaging blow while Bournemouth boost their European push…

@ALLCHELS_: If anything, winning the titlle will be because of pure luck and not because you have been any great

@Ryan_Colaco: Arsenal losing 2-1 at home to Bournemouth is disgraceful, but what did we expect? This style of football is not sustainable, long-term. The football again had lacked urgency and has been very lethargic. It’s like we are playing scared to avoid losing. It’s heart every player like this, except Max Dowman. I don’t like the mentality Mikel Arteta has coached into this team. #ArsBou #ArtetaOut

@NepentheZ: We’ve genuinely gone from a team that looked unstoppable, and could attract any player, to a team that is on the verge of bottling the lot and losing the likes of Rice, Saliba, Saka and Gabriel to winners. Madrid, Bayern, City, FCB, PSG… these clubs will come hunting if we win nothing. I’m genuinely exhaughsted with this team playing like they forgot where the goal is. We’ve made ourselves too easy to beat, we’re playing with fear and without freedom. This team doesn’t deserve to win anything if it doesn’t wake up. The City game is the league. We either show that we can be champions, or we might as well pack it all up and go home.

@Daisyb_0620: Back to back wins at the emirates in the league and 12 unbeaten which is a club record not bad 😁🍒 #afcb

@minty_9: I always think back to -17 and #afcb nearly going out of business on days like today. What a journey it’s been. Makes days like today even sweeter

@upthecherries29: May need to renew those passports, what a performance!!!!! Defended so incredibly and all around brilliance. That was a proud performance from the boys. What a feeling those 3 points are!!! 🍒🍒 #afcb

@KirkTovey: Massive winning vibes return & 12 unbeaten now. Iraola at it again. We played a perfect game choosing our moments to try & win. Hill & Scott stand outs for me. Up to 9th for the moment & now let’s go & get at Eddie Howe’s Newcastle next week. Up the Chez 🍒 #afcb

@Cantona_Collars: I don’t care if it means the cheating bastards win it – Arsenal bottling the league would be fucking hilarious

@jonsparkafcb: The wonderful thing is that Bournemouth have been comfortably the better side today. The Arsenal team was so flat. The fans could only do so much to urge improvement on a torrid performance from their team. Deserved 3 points today #afcb

@kw1satzhaderacc: What a performance, what a huge victory. 12 unbeaten now and to beat the league leaders in this manner is massive. Hill and Scott fabulous once again. UPPA CHEZZZ 😍🍒 #afcb

@APresserV2: Unfortunately, this is what bottling looks like.

@ConnCFC: Bournemouth on behalf of the footballing world, thank you. Arsenal bottling the league is such a beautiful gift to humanity
