Barrow manager receives EIGHT game touchline ban, fine and education course

Barrow manager Mark Cooper receives an EIGHT game touchline ban, has been fined £3k and made to attend an education course by the FA.

This punishment has been put to Cooper after he allegedly used abusive and/or insulting words in the 91st minute of game in a League Two game last August.

This came against Exeter City, however it would see that the decision hasn’t gone down well with the Cumbrian outfit ahead of their battle to stay up.

FA’S STATEMENT:

Barrow AFC’s Mark Cooper has been banned from the touchline for eight games, fined £3,000 and ordered to attend a face-to-face education course for a breach of FA Rule E3 that occurred during their EFL League Two game against Exeter City FC on Tuesday 17 August 2021.

It was alleged that the manager used abusive and/or insulting words in the 91st minute, which are contrary to FA Rule E3.1, and that these words constitute an “aggravated breach”, as defined in FA Rule E3.2 as they included a reference, whether express or implied, to gender.

Mark Cooper denied these allegations but an independent Regulatory Commission subsequently found them to be proven and imposed his sanctions, which remain subject to appeal, after reviewing the available evidence. The written reasons for their decisions will be published in due course.

Barrow said in their statement: “The Club is aware of the decision made by the FA Regulatory Commission in the case of our Manager, Mark Cooper.

“Mark is obviously disappointed by the decision.

“Neither he nor the Club have yet received the reasons for the decision, which will be considered with a view to appeal in due course.”

As it stands, this punishment means Mark Cooper will have to operate away from the dugout for more than half of the Bluebirds’ remaining league fixtures – starting with this weekend’s trip to Exeter.

At the time of the sending off, Barrow assistant boss Richard Dryden was unsure what was said as Cooper was sent off for remarks made to an assistant referee towards the end of the goalless draw with Exeter at Holker Street.

Cooper was given marching order late on for apparent comments made to referee Andrew Kitchen’s colleague Helen Edwards.

The Cumbrians – unbeaten now in three league and cup outings – sent out assistant boss Dryden to conduct post-match media interviews.

“I didn’t see it to be fair,” said Dryden. “I was at the other end of the dugout trying to do stuff.

“I honestly didn’t hear what he said or what went through it all. I looked round and all of a sudden there was a red card out.

“I didn’t see or hear because I was organising lads off the pitch.”

@JamesHibbert11: Crooked FA have it in for us don’t they first getting us out of the leagues and now trying their best to make sure we get relegated with poor officials week after week and now this

@gjb1971: So this happened at the start of the season and they’ve decided to wait until the business end of the season to deal with it, 6 months later…. going to be missing for half of the remaining games. Anyone would think they wanted us to go down. Smacks of 1972 all over again.

Will Haskell: Cooper loves getting into trouble, surprised how long it took to get to this decision though, gunna have quite the impact to our end of season now

Jason Foley: FFS Mark why can’t you just behave for once

Paul Taylor: what the actual fuck we might as well appoint a new manager at this rate

Liam Westwell: Thank god his is no longer at my club

Keith Bernard: Would love to know what was said, surprise the FA or Barrow don’t say

Eddie Rayment: Might actually have a chance at staying in that case haha

Reece Tunstall: Jesus christ an eight game ban?! never known a manager to get a long one like that, really must have been a bad one

Ollie Avery: That’s a big blow to our chances of staying in League Two
