Bristol City claim seven more Championship clubs could be deducted points

Bristol City, who are losing £412,000 a week, claim that seven more Championship clubs could be deducted points for FFP breaches.

Pressure continues to grow on the EFL to agree new ‘force majeure’ Covid allowances, and the Robins, who last month admitted that they may be forced to take a points deduction next year, think they might not be the only club who will be affected.

The report suggested that Middlesbrough and Stoke are among other sides facing scrutiny as the English Football League enters the next 12 months of its three-year “profit and sustainability” cycle.

“I’d have thought there will five, six, seven in our league in a similar position as we are and there will be others that are struggling,” City chairman Jon Lansdown said.

Last month, Richard Gould, the club’s chief executive, told Telegraph Sport that the ‘Covid-inflicted collapse’ in transfer values in the Championship cost the club £30m.

On a more positive note however, Bristol City have recently secured a record sponsorship deal with e-commerce firm Huboo, who are to have their logo emblazoned on the shirts of all the Bristol Sport teams (City’s men and women sides, Bristol Bears rugby and Bristol Flyers basketball).

This deal will see the club part ways with MansionBet, which could prove to be a smart move considering the Government’s plan to ban betting companies banned from appearing on football shirts just like we’ve seen with alcohol.

With Bristol City reportedly losing £412,000 a week, the introduction of a soft salary cap and a recovery in transfer values are key in the club’s journey to financial recovery.

“I’d like to think that Bristol City is looked at as a very stable, well run football club, locally-owned, with sensible actions,” added Lansdown.

“We’ve all got slightly different models but you can see our track record that we use the transfer market so we can have a slightly higher wage than a club of our size would normally have.”

Twitter users reacted as Bristol City claim seven more Championship clubs could be deducted points, see how it went down below…

@Jonatha05884996: Might get lucky and only get -6 like Reading, QPR got hit hardest with a monstrous fine

@parsons_real: Sensibly run yet losing £412K a week? Fair enough, he’s paying the tab, local fan done well and in it for the long haul but if they’re in breach of rules, should be punished. Seems to me he gambled on being out of EFL and in the Prem but failed, now afraid to face the music.

@ashtonadams39·2hYou’re not far off but not spot on. Lansdown stepped away, mark ashton took the reigns. Every year gave bigger contract to his mates , began to rely on selling best assets. In a sense of becoming self sustainable, league cup semi, 7th placed finish year after. Each time. Stripping best values . Flint, pack, Reid, Bryan, Webster, kelly, brownhill, Freeman, ayling for examples. Then unfortunately Ashton didn’t invest properly. Signed players from Europe etc. Covid happened, the ceiling came crashing down as no parachute payments. When he saw the mess he’d made due to unforeseen circumstances. Jumped ship at the first opportunity. Now reliant on academy players after expiring 13 senior contracts to bring wage bills and impact finances down. Sell one of the youngsters , we’re back in the green.

@UsuallyAnn0yed: Covid has hit a lot of clubs already living well beyond their means. Parachute payments from @premierleague also kill championship clubs who’ve not been in the Prem.

@KieranTH17 (Bristol City fan): We are in the mud

@_bd_2003: can see us being sold and having to play games at some small stadium like Twerton in League One , while a new stadium is sorted. Bristol Sport was never about this club. will Always be the Rugby and Flyers First.

@dannysmithlaaa: It’s funny cause I rattled a load of Bristol City fans cages when we beat them before Christmas about this. Another deluded fan base of a club that tried throwing a load of money at players in hope of Premier League football.

@roathboy: Bristol City are losing £412k-a-week? How?! On that squad? Surely not. They must keep the heating on full blast at all times and subscribe to all the premium channels

@DDocker83: Surely Middlesbrough wouldn’t fall foul of FFP 😏

@LutonTownExile: We’re definitely going up.

@SenseSimon: The @EFL really have opened the Pandora’s Box to a murky world of litigation with their outright failure and refusal to deal with the spurious, and downright opportunist, claims from Middlesbrough and Wycombe. #DCFC

@bristolbluegas: They’re trying to drag more down with them.

@SincePlayed: Would be hilarious karma if Boro’s lawsuit against us set the precedent for them to be sued when their FFP breached her punished. #dcfc #dcfcfans

@Gilbers84:
Championship is pretty much categories at the moment.
– clubs with para payments so spend
– clubs living to their means
– clubs getting points deductions
