Burton Albion managed to shock fans by signing an ex-Premier League player turned free agent in Oumar Niasse on Thursday afternoon.
The League One side Burton Albion have signed the 31-year-old, who scored nine goals in 42 appearances during five years with the Toffees and also played in the Premier League on loan with Hull and Cardiff.
Niasse, who cost Everton £13.5m from Lokomotiv Moscow, left Huddersfield in June without making an appearance.
BURTON ALBION STATEMENT:
Burton Albion have completed the signing of Senegal international striker Oumar Niasse.
The 31-year-old free agent was a prolific scorer in his home nation before enjoying success in the top flights in Turkey and Russia, winning the league’s Player of the Year award whilst helping Lokomotiv Moscow win the domestic cup in 2015.
That form earned him a £13.5 million move to the Premier League with Everton, scoring 12 goals in 36 starts and 29 substitute appearances in the English top-flight.
He also had loan spells away from the Premier League club at Hull City and Cardiff City to get game time during his time on Merseyside.
Huddersfield Town is Niasse’s most recent club, having earnt a deal with the West Yorkshire club after impressing on trial.
However, he didn’t make a competitive appearance for the Championship club due to injury and was released when his contract expired at the end of June 2021.
Oumar will take the number 21 shirt with the Club.
Manager, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, said: “We are obviously aware that Oumar has been out of training for a while since he left Huddersfield.
“He’s been training with us for a short period and has shown a lot of hunger and desire to get back playing.
“We know he’s made over 50 Premier League appearances, and he’s shown us that he can add something to the squad that we have – hopefully he’ll be a good help for us to finish the season strongly.”
Everyone at Burton Albion would like to welcome Oumar to the Pirelli Stadium!
