Sam Folarin produces a ‘miss of the season’ contender, then Sutton United go on to lose 3-0 to Barrow on Saturday afternoon.

He stood up strong, got past the defender and then chipped the keeper, but sent the ball higher than expected, had to wait for it to come back down it bounced just inches from the goal line and instead of tapping it in, possibly expecting it go in, he leaves it to bounce onto the top of the bar and over.

Sutton went on to concede three goals, MJ Williams (18′), Isaac Marriott (78′) and Ben Whitfield (90’+7) giving Barrow their first league win of the season.

They are 18th with 5 points from 6 games. Sutton meanwhile are 5th with 12 points from 6 games.

Barrow wrote in their report: “The visitors were inches away from taking the lead as Sam Folarin’s effort was over the crossbar.

Sutton United said in their report: “U’s will wonder how different it might have been had Sam Folarin, restored to the Sutton starting line-up, not produced a contender for the miss of the season that is unlikely to be challenged inside the first five minutes.

“Put clear by a long clearance, Folarin did everything right to get in behind the defence and lift the ball over the advancing Barrow goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom, but in trying to make sure from inside the six yard box he headed the ball in to the ground and saw it bounce up over the bar and on the roof of the net rather than in it.”

Meanwhile, Woking also had their own ‘miss of the season’ contender, with John Marquis unable slot the ball past Hartlepool keeper Max Merrick.

Sutton boss Chris Agutter told the club’s media: “We got into some really good positions.

“We gave a sloppy corner away, an uncharacteristic error, and they’ve then scored from the corner.

“That’s disappointing because, in terms of set pieces, we’ve been excellent this season so far.

“It’s the first goal we’ve conceded from a set piece, which is frustrating, but we’ll look at that.

“We won five in a row and we’ve lost a couple of games. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that we’ve lost the last couple of games.

“You look at the team that we’ve put out there. We’re missing key personnel.

“We’ve lost the last couple of games and we haven’t been able to field the side which won five out of five, or four out of four in the league.”

“We’ve gone about our business with the intention of competing at the top end of the league.

“I looked at the league table and we’re one point off the top. When we walked in the door, I think we were bottom of the league.

“So, you know, it’s frustrating, it’s disappointing, but there are reasons. There aren’t excuses, there are reasons.

“We’re essentially missing our John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho at the back, you know – what those guys were to Chelsea. Those are big misses for us.

“That’s the experience we brought in in the summer, and it’s no surprise that in the last two games we’ve looked a bit inexperienced, a bit naive along the back line, and we’ve given up silly goals.

“They’re a dying breed, that type of centre-back, and we’re missing them.

“They make players better around them which is why, as I said before, they add another five per cent to themselves, another five per cent to the lads in front of them.

“In time, Kirk and those guys will get to that level, maybe even higher, but experience is massively lacking in the side, and we’ve found that over the last couple of games.

On Toby Byron: “He shouldn’t be playing, but we don’t have a choice.”

“They [Barrow] are a big, powerful side that go direct from back to front, so we had to play Toby. He’s not fit, but I thought he was great.”

“It’s really positive that he’s back in the side and back available for selection, and that does help us.”

On the travelling fans: “As always, brilliant.

“Obviously, that will be very disappointing and frustrating for them because they’ve seen what we’ve seen today. I feel for the supporters.

“We haven’t been great today, but we haven’t been bad enough to lose that game 3-0, absolutely no way.”

Barrow’s Adam Murray said: “Relieved. I think when we go 1-0 up and rightly so, I thought we had more of the ball today. We had more control. I felt we had more control of the game against a very very good team. They’re up there at the start of the season for a reason. They put you under a lot of stress but we kind of knew what was coming so we planned for that. Made a couple of changes to try and deal with that and to get us flowing a little bit more in possession, and then we got into half time at 1-0 and my message to the lads was like we went into protect mode at the end of the first half.

“It was like, right, we’re 1-0 up. Let’s try and protect it. No, no, no, no, no. That’s not the mentality. We’ll go in for the next one and the next one. So, snap out of that, we ain’t spending 45 minutes defending defending on our defending on our 18 yard box. So, credit to the boys. They took that on board. And no, it’s a tough game, but I think you could feel even at 2-0, you can still feel that anxiety and that you people just need the whistle to blow till we get that first victory.

“But I’m over the moon for everyone tonight, the chairman, the fans, the players that they’ve been so so good in this first month of the season without their rewards, so look, let’s just enjoy the moment and when we’ll we’ll move on to the next one.”
