Barrow’s National League game against Forest Green Rovers was abandoned after just 14 minutes, despite the referee carrying out hourly pitch inspections before kick-off.
Barrow confirmed that adverse weather ended the contest at the Furness Building Society Stadium on Saturday. The home side were leading 1–0 after scoring just 15 seconds into the match.
In their official statement, the club said the referee had deemed the playing surface suitable for the game to start. Conditions then deteriorated, prompting the decision to stop play.
Standing water pictured hours before kick-off
A photograph posted by Kieran (@kw2403_) at 11:12am shows a large area of standing water on the pitch. He wrote: “Not looking good down at the Furness Building Society Arena.” The timestamp places the image several hours before kick-off; it does not establish the exact state of the surface when the referee’s final inspection took place.

Barrow’s official account then posted its “Go time” clip at 2:57pm, showing the teams heading out shortly before the match. Together, the posts document the build-up to a game that lasted only 14 minutes.

Hourly inspections, then an abandonment
The inspection timeline will be a source of frustration for supporters who travelled and paid to attend, only to see the afternoon end so quickly.
It raises a fair question: with repeated checks required before kick-off, was there enough confidence that conditions would allow the match to continue? Barrow’s account is that it was judged suitable before the weather worsened. The statement does not establish whether that deterioration could have been predicted before kick-off.

Barrow’s response
The club said its ground staff had worked to give the fixture the best chance of going ahead. It thanked them and the supporters of both teams who attended in difficult weather.
There is no independent assessment in the club’s statement of whether the abandonment could have been predicted earlier. The confirmed sequence is that inspections took place, the referee allowed kick-off and worsening conditions led to the match being abandoned.
What happens to the score and tickets?
Barrow says the fixture will be replayed in full, beginning at 0–0. The 1–0 lead at the time of the abandonment will therefore not carry into the rearranged game.
A new date and the relevant ticketing information will be announced in due course. Supporters should wait for that guidance before making fresh arrangements.
