Wolves fans go viral trying to taunt Liverpool with savage chant

Wolves fans go viral this Sunday evening after trying to taunt Liverpool with a savage chant during the game as Man City win the league.

They could be heard singing “You nearly won the league, you nearly won the league” with around 10 minutes remaining after Pep Guardiola’s side had come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Man City.

However Paul Gorst (Liverpool FC correspondent for Liverpool Echo) claims that ‘it actually ended up sounding like a compliment to Jurgen Klopp’s side being a sheer force of will was entirely in-keeping on an Anfield afternoon where nothing was quite as it seemed.’

He added in his report: “For the third time, Jurgen Klopp will break the 90-point barrier as manager, but like 2019 – when a whopping 97 was the final total – another magnificent haul of 92 is not enough to bring them a Premier League title.

“At times, it seemed as though the only thing stopping them securing a 20th championship was their own anxiety as they laboured while Manchester City, astonishingly, trailed 2-0 to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa.

“For the football romantics, however, there would be a fate much more hurtful than the laughable attempts from the Wolves faithful to rile their Liverpool counterparts: A Gerrard side, who doubled their advantage through Philippe Coutinho, could not survive the inevitable City onslaught. The dream quickly became a nightmare.”

Manchester City staged a superb late comeback with three goals in five minutes to beat Aston Villa and win the Premier League as their title chances looked to be slipping away amid dramatic scenes at Etihad Stadium.

Subs: Ings (6), Nakamba (n/a), Young (n/a).

Man of the match: Ilkay Gundogan.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: “It’s not easy, there was a bit of disbelief and we still had to believe in the turnaround.

“I’m so happy, and the way it was makes it a little bit better but let’s not try to repeat that.

“When you beat a team as good as Liverpool, it feels better. We have won it the last few years against top, top teams.

“But once again we are the best team in England and next year we will try to come back and give a bit more to the fans.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: “Congratulations to Man City and Pep Guardiola. Thank you to Aston Villa and Wolverhampton for making a proper game of it.

“It’s not the result we wanted. It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I don’t know the results exactly but I know they were 1-0 up – were they 2-0 up as well? Of course at the moment there’s disappointment here as well.

“If it’s 5-0 to City after 10 minutes it’s just a normal game for us. It wasn’t our best game either, but it’s all good. 92 points is absolutely incredible. We wanted it all, but now it’s OK.

“[Finishing second] is the story of my life. I’m still record holder for not getting promoted in Germany with the highest points tally. You need to get more points than any other teams, but we didn’t do that.

“You can’t do more than give your absolute best and that’s what the boys did again. We chased the best team in the world to the wire, that’s absolutely special. We’ll build a team again and go again.”

More from Jurgen Klopp: “If we’d known the situation before the season I probably would have said I’ll take that – although I’m not too sure with the league. If you want to win big, you have to be ready to lose big. That’s what we did today.

“It’s all about reacting. We can’t react in the league tomorrow, but next year we can.

“I’ve already told them 500 million times. This is the best group I’ve ever had. It’s a joy to come into work every morning. We need a solid basis to react to defeats. We know why we didn’t make it – we needed a bit more consistency in the first half of the season.

“There’s space for improvement and we’ll work on that. It’s really cool when you don’t need 10 changes, you just build on what you have. That’s what we’ll do.

“If people on the outside don’t understand how special this club is, I can’t help them. Hopefully now, we’ll get our third trophy of the season.”

Manchester City’s Jack Grealish speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s unbelievable. After the third goal went in, I ran on the pitch because we were all celebrating and after that I just went straight down the tunnel, I was crying my eyes out. When you’re a kid all you want to do is play in the Premier League and once you do that the next thing is winning it. I can’t put this into words, honestly.

“We know how good of a side Aston Villa were, they showed it today but we know with our quality we can beat anyone. We did that in the last 20 minutes or so, I can’t put it into words.

“It means everything – when I signed here people were saying to me ‘what do you actually want – to win the Champions League or the Premier League?’ and for me it was always the Premier League. I’ve never won it before and I’m so happy.

“[Being at City has been] harder than I thought. It was more difficult than I thought. I’ve enjoyed every minute, I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone to come here – new changing room, new surroundings, new team-mates, it’s been difficult. Way harder than I thought. But this today just makes up for all of it.

“I know that I can kick on and I certainly will – I feel like I’ve played my part in games, the goal last week at West Ham which obviously meant a lot. I can kick on so much more, I know in myself how much of a role I have to play in this football club and I will.

“All these guys have made me feel so welcome. My first day here was the worst ever! Going into a new changing room, something I’ve never done before, but the lads here are unbelievable and I love them all so much.”

Aston Villa’s Steven Gerrard speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live: “We were really good for 70 minutes, the players carried the plan out exactly as we wanted. We caused them a lot of problems but went into protection mode, stopped playing and City were relentless.

“They have been together for long time, spent a lot of money to put one of the best teams in the world together. I said to my players that you can never switch off, and they really turned it around in the last 20 minutes.”
