Video emerges of heated scenes as Bayern Munich fans clash with Arsenal stewards and police

Video footage emerges of heated scenes pre-match as Bayern Munich fans clash with Arsenal stewards and police, who had to intervene.

There was significant disorder in the away section at the Emirates Stadium before their Champions League match.

Violent clashes broke out involving pushing and shouting, leading to officers storming the area, separating groups and dragging at least one fan away down the tunnel.

The reason behind the chaos has since emerged, read on through this article as to what allegedly led to it…

German media report that Bayern fans ‘experienced a night in London that once again raises fundamental questions about security and how to deal with away supporters.’

Vjekoslav Keskic of fcbinside.de wrote that Bayern Munich fans were severely mistreated. Banners, choreography, and fan leader positions, which had been pre-approved and coordinated with security, was then suddenly blocked by stewards, who tried to banners and chant leaders, sparking confrontation.

Dozens of security personnel then lined up provocatively in front of the away end, then after the game, the situation escalated, fans attempted to leave, police are then said to have aggressively kettled and attacked groups of supporters without provocation.

Bayern fans were punched, pushed, and injured, some required hospital treatment.

The game meanwhile saw Arsenal beat Bayern 3-1. Jurrien Timber opened the scoring for the Gunners 22 minutes in, before 17-year-old Lennart Karl levelled with Bayern’s only goal of the game just after the half hour mark.

Noni Madueke netted his first Arsenal goal since his £48.5m move from Chelsea with 20 minutes remaining, then substitute Gabriel Martinelli adds a third shortly after.

Arsenal sit top of the Champions League table with 15 points from 5 games, 14 goals scored and the 1 conceded. Bayern are 3rd with 12 points, and their first defeat of the season.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to TNT Sports on what pleased him most: “Probably the overall performance and the way we dominated the game. This game was going to require a different dimension, and individually we were exceptional.

“This will bring more confidence and trust to the players. We made changes. The players performed in an incredible way. I am so pleased, I thought we were excellent.

“It’s very important to have them back and available [Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard]. The impact the players are showing is remarkable.”

On whether it feels like it could be Arsenal’s season in the Champions League: “I don’t know. We’re going to enjoy tonight and then start to prepare for the weekend. There is still so far to go.”

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to TNT Sports: “Look at Bayern Munich this season, they have been the best team in Europe. This was probably the toughest game tactically we have played this season. The way they work it is so, so good.

“We went man to man with them in the second half and I thought tonight we were outstanding. The manager is so happy. It was a special European night.

“Yes, definitely [it feels different to last season]. There are so many leaders in the team. We are just taking it one game at a time. There is a hunger and desire to win every game. There is a long way to go – let’s not get carried away.”

Rice, speaking to TNT Sports: “It’s been so easy to play with Martín Zubimendi. From the first moment we had with each other in pre-season, I just knew we’d play some good football. I really like him, he’s such a nice guy.

“He is Spain’s No 6 and you know what Spain No 6’s are like. He has been so, so good for us.

“Every game requires something different. Every player knows their role.”

Arsenal’s Noni Madueke, speaking to TNT Sports: “I couldn’t have picked a better game to score my first Arsenal goal. I am so happy the team got the win as well.

“It’s an incredible statement, but we know the work we put in. We go into these games with every confidence that we are going to win.

“I am a confident player. I don’t like someone telling me I cannot do something. But my team mates and the staff have belief in me.”

Bayern Munich striker and England captain Harry Kane, speaking to TNT Sports: “It was a tough game which is kind of what we expected. It was a good battle in the first half which was fairly even.

“Second half we didn’t quite have the same energy or intensity and we lost too many duels. It’s our first loss of the season. We don’t’ want to panic too much about it. But we will learn about it for sure.

“They won the first and second balls. Set pieces, we knew they would be dangerous. I’m sure we’ll see them [Arsenal] again in the later stages of the Champions League.

“They defended man for man pretty much all over the pitch. As I said, I don’t think it’s time to panic. We have played Chelsea, and Paris St-Germain and Arsenal away. We have won the majority of our games.”

Twitter users reacted after video emerges of heated scenes as Bayern Munich fans clash with Arsenal stewards and police…

@Alan_Alger_: Police were a little aggressive with one fan, but the reaction from the rest of them should have led to far more arrests than the one or two that were eventually thrown out.

@RealRobertBusch: They caused a problem, but they should have punished more people for the consequences of their own actions. Sounds weird to me. But I guess that’s England.

@Alan_Alger_: As I VERY clearly pointed out, one of the Bayern fans was treated badly, yet the overreaction from more Bayern fans was what caused the main trouble. The first incident was being resolved when they started attacking the police.

@aubayern: the police was terrible

@evilgeniuslevi: @MPSFootballUnit Facial recognition at NLD… Stop & searching home fans that smell fragrant but ejecting zero Bayern fans after assaulting stewards and your own officers… well done lads… red caps for the clowns!

@PatchJS: Bayern fans (and German fans generally) are the most self righteous people in the world. Hope everyone was backing our brave stewards when it kicked off 👍🏻 In all seriousness when you go away to Bayern you get put in the top tier behind netting and get a proper shake down in the searches outside. At English grounds they get lower tier, no netting or perspex and this is how they behave!
