Tottenham and PSG play out eight-goal thriller; Thomas Frank’s side throw away lead twice

Tottenham and PSG play out an eight-goal thriller with it seeing Thomas Frank’s side throw away their lead twice.

Richarlison had put Spurs ahead on 35 minutes, but Vitinha equalised for PSG on the verge of half time with a superb right-footed strike.

Randal Kolo Muani then had Tottenham in front again against his parent club, five minutes after the break.

But PSG then ran riot with three goals in 12 minutes from Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz and Willian Pacho.

Kolo Muani had given Spurs so hope after 72 minutes, but then the former Wolves loanee Vitinha completed his hat-trick four minutes later from the penalty spot.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports:

“There is a frustration when you go 1-0 up and 2-1 up against PSG away from home. The performance was to really get something out of the game – a point or three points. That was the performance.

“You hope Vitinha doesn’t put the ball in the top corner. That was very tricky. Then the two goals, their third and fourth, you can’t concede them if you want to win here.

“By the way, Vitinha, best midfielder in the world, he’ll be the next Ballon d’Or winner for me.

“I’m very pleased with the performance, I liked the bounce back from the setback in the last game.

“This showed more of the identity of the team. The aggressivity, the bravery, going forward, running at them, just everything about the performance. I was very pleased with that.

“Another positive from the game, two strikers scoring three goals between them. I think the whole team performed well overall. I think Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall in midfield, looked really, really good.

“I think that can definitely be a turning point, and the two goals give you some confidence to go forward.

“He’s been struggling a little bit with form for various reasons. He had a setback with the dead leg, a broken jaw, and came to us not being fit. Now it looks better and better, and we saw the best of him.”

PSG boss Luis Enrique said: “There are no easy games in the Champions League.

“Tottenham defended very well in the first half. We had to come back from two goals down. It’s very complicated, very difficult.

“We played a complete game. I would like to congratulate our supporters because the atmosphere is incredible when there are difficulties.

“The team can only have this mentality going forward. We are very happy to have these twelve points and we are almost certain to be in the top 24.

“We saw last season how difficult it is to get into the top 24.”

Tottenham’s Archie Gray, speaking to TNT Sports:Ā “We played against a top opponent tonight, they are probably the best team in Europe at the moment. There were some good moments we can take into Fulham.

“We scored some goals, there are things we can work on but they are a top, top team and there are moments you will suffer against them.

“They are the best team in Europe and they are relentless in every aspect of their game and they have that individual class. They are a top team and there are things we can learn from.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tottenham and PSG play out eight-goal thriller…

@GaryRWard: So many positives, but again, the architect of our own downfall by overpaying in tight, unnecessary areas, & switching off. However, a big reaction for parts of the game over Sunday. Limit the errors, keep the energy out of possession high, while sorting the balance issues on the left & we could a solid side to cause teams problems. A big performance is needed against Fulham on Saturday.

@CptnCockerel: Not too disappointed with that. We were entertaining for a change. Scored 3 against a top, top team and lost by conceding a couple of worldies and a lucky pen.

@PReddog84: Sunday League Defending. Nine goals conceded in two games playing a defensive back five – wow

@ltcooper_3: There’s only so many Pedro Porro free kicks a man can take…

@mrcraigo10: Better going forward (could not be any worse), but horrific defensively again. Bergvall and Kolo Muani should be starting 99% of games. They’re too good not to.

@ltcooper_3:
Step 1: expect nothing from the game
Step 2: Spurs perform for 20 minutes
Step 3: get your hopes up
Step 4: lose and have your day ruined

@coystodian: Now we have to pretend that was a good performance when in actuality the Arsenal game was so bad, anything looks better. We conceded 5 and let another player dunk a hat trick on us. Getting boring now.

@ShaunR180: The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s 1 hell of a rollercoaster supporting this club and apart from the few brain farts we gave it a good go at times tonight. Kolo take a bow and please kick on from here. Rest up Fulham next. 3 points please šŸ™šŸ»

@johnrhueston: Frank was supposed to sort #Spurs defensive problems. To concede 9 goals in 2 games and having 2 of the so called best defenders in Romero and VDV needs to be addressed. At least they showed character, gave it a go for 50 mins until PSG went through the gears. #THFC #COYS

@LaneAryeh: If we actually play football, we can win and score goals. Hopefully Thomas Frank builds on these positives from tonight. Bergvall and Gray MUST PLAY. Bentancur MUST NOT. I have no confidence that Thomas Frank will build on these positives at all.

@1882spurs1: I’m immensely frustrated by that. So many positives to take. That third goal killed it. Muani was sensational & I really rate him, always have. Romero a shocker. I can take so much from that. Best team in the world & arguably should have done them twice. We move

@SteveSmith_cam: 60 mins gave a good account of ourselves and going toe to toe with the best team in Europe until we, or rather Romero and Sarr between them, decided to hit the self destruct button FFS, at least positive approach to the game Munai off the mark so bit more encouraging

@msegs13: Tbf not the worst display we ever have seen. Thought Frank had them set up pretty well tho probably waited too long to make subs. Romero chose a bad day to have his worst day in Spurs kit. So many preventable individual errors
