VIDEO: Chelsea fans interrupt minute’s applause for Ukraine with chants of ‘Roman Abramovich’

Chelsea fans chose to interrupt minute’s applause for Ukraine with chants of ‘Roman Abramovich’ prior to Saturday’s game at Burnley.

Premier League clubs showed support to Ukrainians this weekend following Russia’s invasion of the country, but home supporters at Turf Moor had to boo the travelling Blues fans for their decision to pay tribute to Abramovich during the minute’s applause ahead of kick-off.

Daily Mail journalist Oliver Holt tweeted: “Crowd at Turf Moor stands and applauds to show solidarity with Ukraine.

“Chelsea fans interrupt with chants of ‘Roman Abramovich, Roman Abramovich.’”

Abramovich announced his decision to sell Chelsea on Wednesday evening, saying he believes “it is in the best interest of the club”.

The Russian billionaire bankrolled the club since his takeover in 2003, with his funding guiding Chelsea to win 19 major trophies during his reign.

Chelsea supporters to Turf Moor on Saturday took to sing his name ahead of kick-off as both sets of players observed a minute’s applause for Ukraine’s war victims.

In his programme notes Burnley chairman Alan Pace said: ‘The events happening in the world today do throw football into context,’ Sky Sports reports.

He added: ‘I want to use this column to again send solidarity and support to the people of Ukraine following the devastating scenes that have been unfolding in the country since the Russian invasion.

‘I believe at times like this football has the power to unite and send a clear message.

‘We were proud to welcome members of the local Ukrainian community to Turf Moor this week and I want to send my support to all those affected within the local area.’

Roman Abramovich has told his aides to set up a charitable foundation to benefit ‘all victims of the war in Ukraine’ which would receive all net proceeds from the sale.

Thomas Tuchel on Roman Abramovich chants from Chelsea fans during show of solidarity for Ukraine: “We show respect as a club and we need our fans to commit to this minute of applause.

“At this moment, we do it for Ukraine and there is no second opinion about the situation there.

The match itself saw Chelsea score four second-half goals to inflict damaging defeat on Burnley – Reece James, Kai Havertz (2) and Christian Pulisic were on target as Chelsea tighten grip on third spot and deepen Clarets’ relegation fears.

Chelsea: Mendy (6), Chalobah (6), Thiago Silva (7), Rudiger (6), James (8), Jorginho (6), Kante (6), Saul (6), Mount (6), Pulisic (7), Havertz (8).

Subs: Kovacic (5), Werner (5), Loftus-Cheek (5).

Man of the Match: Reece James

Burnley boss Sean Dyche: You hope you’re not going to pay for it [for not taking our chances] but we did. We were excellent in the first half. The gameplan we started out with was delivered by the players; we kept it nice and tight, the shape was excellent, they played around our shape and never broke us down. We had the best chances, one fell to Dwight [McNeil] which you hope will go it, but we were completely in the game at half-time.

“Then a really poor goal clearly affected us in the second half. It’s the madness of football sometimes, you can concede but that shouldn’t stop us from doing what we were doing. We lost sight of that, opened up too quickly and thought we would score right away against a team that have only conceded 18 goals.

“Then the second goes in, then the third and that is it, the game is gone. I’m really confused by that eight or nine minutes. We will debrief that because it was not like us, certainly not recently.”

Sky Sports’ Jack Wilkinson at Turf Moor:

“It was a case of what might have been, and a case of what might be to come for Burnley. Miss chances like they did in the first half and defend like they did in the second half and their Premier League status could expire come the end of the season.

“The Clarets were superb in the first period, but you cannot afford to miss chances like the one Dwight McNeil squandered. Chelsea were off colour and there for the taking, but Burnley let them off the hook and paid a heavy price.

“The opportunity to climb above Everton and out of the bottom three was not seized and their goal difference is now worse than the Toffees, who have two games in hand. The outlook is bleak.”
