VIDEO: Brighton fans mock Everton with brutal chant as atmosphere turns toxic

Brighton fans chose to mock Everton with a brutal chant as the Goodison Park atmosphere turns toxic with pressure increasing on Rafa Benitez.

Going into the game, Everton only had one Premier League win in 11 while Brighton have one win in 14 (all comps).

It was a dire first half for the Toffees, with home fans watching their side fall behind after just three minutes when Veltman’s cross was cushioned into the path of Alexis Mac Allister by Neal Maupay and he tucked his first-time shot underneath Jordan Pickford.

The 21st minute saw yet more poor defending from Everton at a set piece and Brighton were in dreamland. The corner was flicked on at the near post by Mwepu and Dan Burn was completely unmarked to head into the net.

At half time, there were very loud boos from the Goodison faithful with Brighton fans hilariously signing “Rafa’s at the wheel” among other chants and taunts.

Everton halved the deficit shortly into the second half with Rafa Benitez’s men right back in the game.

Allan played a lovely ball out wide to Gordon on the right flank, he used Kenny as a decoy as he cut inside and unleashed a left-footed shot.

It took a huge deflection off Lallana and flew past the wrong-footed Sanchez.

Brighton regained their two-goal advantage on the 71st minute. Michael Keane’s poor with his clearance as Burn nipped in to feed Trossard down the left. His cross was flicked by Mwepu back to Mac Allister and his strike with the outside of the right boot flashed past Pickford.

It was against the run of play but they’re back in control of this game.

Then on the 76th minute, game on again, with Everton getting their second. There were questions about Anthony Gordon’s first goal, but there was no doubt with this second one.

Calvert-Lewin played a lovely weighted pass to Kenny down the right and his low cross is swept in by Gordon.

Everton couldn’t find that equaliser and Brighton came away thrilled with the three points, taking them to 8th (27 points from 19) while for Rafa’s men they sit 15th, 19 points from 18 games.

Again the boos ring out again around Goodison, while those in the away end celebrated another fine performance.

Player ratings

Everton: Pickford (6), Kenny (7), Holgate (6), Keane (5), Godfrey (6), Allan (6), Doucoure (5), Gordon (8), Coleman (6), Gray (7), Calvert-Lewin (5).

Subs: Gomes (n/a), Rondon (n/a).

Brighton: Sanchez (7), Cucurella (7), Webster (7), Veltman (7), Burn (8), Bissouma (7), Mwepu (7), Lallana (6), Trossard (6), Mac Allister (9), Maupay (7).

Subs: Lamptey (6), Moder (n/a), Duffy (7).

Man of the match: Alexis Mac Allister.

Everton boss Rafael Benitez: “I like to remember the things we do well and remember the things we don’t do right. We have shown character in a lot of games, but we’re not capable to avoid mistakes that are costing us games.

“We had a slow start, and after another mistake conceding a corner. It’s a big mountain to climb and it’s not easy with these mistakes. You miss a penalty and it’s even more difficult.”

On Calvert-Lewin playing the full 90 minutes: “Obviously, we didn’t want to keep him on the pitch as we felt physically he wouldn’t have the match fitness. Maybe he has the strength but not the stamina but at least he’s fine and hopefully he can recover quickly for the next one.”

“We have players coming back. We want players who want to fight for this club and his team-mates. You have to choose the best players possible and we were pushing but we have to manage games better.”

On Rondon being booed when coming off the bench: “It’s difficult to understand as when you bring a striker on for a defender and you need a goal, it’s because you are trying to do what’s best for the team.”

Brighton boss Graham Potter: “When you follow us, you can see we’re not one team and one team. It’s quite normal and it’s something we do anyway. The games depend on the opponent, and the consistency comes from the way we want to play. Who is playing and the formation is what changes.

“It’s an incredible effort from the players. To play at Chelsea and then come back late, you expend a lot of energy. It’s a credit to all the players as everyone has been ready to play. When the spirit is so good, you’ve got a chance to win football matches.

“We understood that here you can’t control things for 90 minutes. You can’t be perfect but the lads saw it out really well. The players have put a lot in during a heavy week so we need a couple of days to recover and recharge before we focus on the FA Cup next weekend. They’ll be ready.”

Twitter users reacted to that as well as Brighton fans going in to mock Everton with their brutal chant as the atmosphere turns toxic…

@emmaowen14: Why do fans keep saying if we lose to … or if we lose to … then he has to go. If us getting 5 points from a possible 30 isn’t enough for him to go then losing to another shit team isn’t going to be enough. Moshiri doesn’t care enough about @Everton, He’s here to stay.

@RichEvans104: When it ends badly as it inevitably will don’t be fooled into thinking he wasn’t given a chance cos he was a red.Everton fans WOULD have had Benitez had he shown some attacking intent and competence. His demise will be down to his shambolic tactics, formations and sheer arrogance

@GerMc31:
Benitez: ‘I know what Everton fans want’
Also Benitez: plays 5 defenders at home to Brighton for 75 mins. Plays Coleman at left wing back with Digne on the bench. Brings Rondon on while Dobbin is left on the bench.
This experiment has run its course now

@lukeWilko1878: Everton fans going to do something about this or just sit here moaning and watch us go down under that fat c*nt

@jellythemosher: How can you justify this man as our manager now @Everton? Please do the right thing for the club & sack him. He’s a poison that is killing this club of ours. Enough is enough us fans don’t deserve this. We are the heartbeat of the club, remember that! #EFC #EVEBHA #BenitezOut

@EvertonArntWe_: Fuck absolutely any blue who can still sit an defend that fat twat, fan base full of spineless cunts. Fuck Rafa an fuck the board.

@ellisp81: How are Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Jonjo Kenny still Everton players? Are there any fans out there who didn’t think 3 yrs ago that they weren’t good enough. There championship at best. And as for the manger and his tactics and team selection I have no words

@renepower: Been watching @Everton since 1983.
First Christmas we didn’t go. Felt it would be too toxic for my eldest boys.
And now a 3-2 home loss to a team that has never won at Goodison.
2 wins in 14.
So poor. And worse, losing the fans you want in your new stadium.
#efc

@LearyEFC: Gordon was great. The rest were shite. Rafa needs to go.

@cbawitheverton: Conceding 3 at home to Brighton is a complete disgrace. I’m ashamed to support Everton at the moment.

@efcalfie: Rafa out! How long are the board willing to let this kopites ego cost us games

@jacksonmoore87: I can’t watch this any more. Rafa has no plan, the players look so lost, and the games as a whole are just played at a horrible level by our players. Its been bad for a while but I’ve never seen it be this bad.

@evertonian6: How have a board allowed a passionate fan base who have stood by the club through all sorts over the years now despise pretty much every part of the club?! They tried throwing us a bone with the Brands dismissal. Time to stop hiding and change board and management as of today!

@EvertomEFC: I’m seeing fans on here accepting the fact that Rafa hasn’t been sacked yet, why? It’s outrageous he’s still there, he should’ve gone after:
Everton 2-5 Watford
Brentford 1-0 Everton
Everton 1-4 Liverpool
Palace 3-1 Everton
now Everton 2-3 Brighton
Embarrassing @everton

@scousericey: Rafa lovers back into hiding. He needs sacking. Being taunted by Brighton fans ‘rafa at the wheel’ not quite a new low as we’ve reached some depths in recent seasons. #rafaout

@_MattyTurnbull:
Brighton fans 🤝 Everton fans
Knowing Rafa’s crap
