Unai Emery has been labelled as ‘bitter’ for snubbing a handshake with Jason Tindall at full time of Newcastle’s win over Aston Villa.
Eddie Howe’s assistant appeared to be ignored by the Villa boss come the final whistle after Newcastle produced their second away win of the Premier League season so far.
As the match ended, a disappointed Unai Emery immediately turned around and shook Eddie Howeβs hand. But the Spaniard immediately turned around after the handshake, despite Tindall following Howe clearly expecting one too.
After the supposed snub, Tindall can be seen with a massive grin on his face, and it didn’t go unnoticed with those watching…

Player ratings (as per Sky Sports)

Subs: Bailey (7), Zaniolo (6), Ramsey (6).
Newcastle: Dubravka (7), Trippier (7), Schar (9), Botman (7), Burn (7), Guimaraes (7), Longstaff (7), Miley (7), Murphy (7), Gordon (8), Isak (6).
Subs: Almiron (7), Livramento (6), Krafth (n/a).
Player of the match: Fabian Schar.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: “I thought it was a good goal for Jacob but obviously not. I think when you see how hard he’s worked, he’s played 70 minutes and a 90 minutes in a week. It’s all down to the hard work he’s put in.”
On performance: “It was mixed emotions for me because that team is an elite team. The mixed part is that we haven’t seen that for a number of weeks. We looked much like ourselves and we have players coming back.”
On game plan: “Our game plan was to be aggressive and stop their rhythm. We did that well in the first half. They play a high line and we used that well. We had to adjust our plan when they got the goal but the players saw it out well. When you’re coaching a team, you want them to play how you see the game. That has been there but it’s been frustrating. Today I saw the team and the identity we’re looking for.”
On away fans: “When the team is not getting the results, it is easy for the supporters to change. They ahve never done that during this run we’ve been on. Hopefully we’ve made that worthwhile for them tonight.”
On Schar goals: “Great to see him back on the scoresheet tonight because he’s been a bit quiet. It’s a great finish. It was a good defensive performance and it had to be.”
On momentum: “We know every game is so tough in the Premier League and we will look to use this game to push on now. The only disappointment today is Alex.” [Injury to Isak]
On Isak injury: “We don’t really know. It looks like a slight groin injury. Hopefully we get him back sooner rather than later.”
On transfer window: “I’d be more than happy for the window to shut with no incomings or outgoings.”
"It doesn't look too serious." πͺ

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I am just happy to get the three points. This place is tough to come for any away team so our performance was brilliant. I am so proud of the team. I am happy with the goals but three points is what matters.
“I was somehow lucky to be in the right position and it is really nice to get my first goals of the season. Really pleased with the performance and the way we played. It gives us a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.
“We know what we are capable of but we haven’t shown it enough. Today we know we were going to have to be at our best. This should give us a lot of confidence and hopefully we can build on these last two results.”
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports: “Good evening. First, congratulations to Newcastle and they played tonight being successful in their performances. First half we did not control the game like we wanted. Obviously at the beginning was because they were playing well and we had to assess. In the second half we got the goal and had chances then to be close to score the second goal but we have to assess the match. I spoke with the players and told them I am very proud of them after a lot of matches we are successful here. One loss has to come and it was today. We have not lost our perspective. The message is to keep going ahead and try and find comfort in the work that we are doing overall.”
On conceding set-pieces: “It is not frustrating because we know that they won last week in two set-pieces at Fulham. They are strong. We were more or less not controlling the game like we wanted and they were threatening in behind, getting in our box and getting corners. After it they scored two goals. Again, we are frustrated, little bit disappointed, but in our perspective we are happy. We have 43 points. We are going to work and try to keep the distance that we have now and then focus on Saturday.”
Emery was asked by TNT Sports about Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers, who has been heavily linked with Villa throughout January:
“We analyse him and we follow him with a scout and as well when we played against Middlesbrough,” said the Spaniard, when asked about whether Rogers was due to have a medical at the club.
“I think he is a potential young player and hopefully tomorrow we can sign him and he can start his new chapter here. We are motivated and excited to work with him and hopefully he can progress here like we think he will do.”
Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey speaking to PLP after the loss against Newcastle: “I couldn’t tell exactly why it was missing tonight. They are a brilliant team. They play good football and have a brilliant structure. They were on it from the first moment and made us work a lot. Scoring two goals early gave us a lot of pressure to come back from. They played better than us and they deserved to be two goals up. But in the second half, being Aston Villa, there were hopes of getting an early goal and they got it.”
On conceding set-pieces: “That’s a part of their style of play as well. They have big players and are very good set-pieces. We tried to work on our set-pieces but we didn’t get it right today. We have to accept that and move on.
“I wouldn’t say the level has dropped. This is football. You have City who win games back to back and Arsenal and teams like that and you have times where things don’t go your way and the other team is better than you on the day. We just have to bounce back and focus on the games coming up to turn things round. We have to accept the loss and bounce back.”
On his display from the bench and Ollie Watkins’ 50th goal for Villa: “It’s difficult, coming from 3-0 down. Coming from the bench is difficult, and I just wanted to give my best and try to push the team forward and get some momentum in the attacking third. I am happy for Ollie to get his 50th goal. He has been very important for us and hopefully he can score many, many more goals for Aston Villa.”
“We are excited to work with him.” π
