Tributes paid to West Brom fan who died after medical emergency at Sheffield Wednesday game

Tributes have been paid to a West Brom fan who died after a medical emergency at the game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

West Brom confirmed a medical emergency took place in the away end with hundreds of fans urging stewards and medical staff for assistance in the upper tier.

Fans also chanted ‘stop the game’ during the incident, however it continued, then medics treated the supporter before moving them out of the stand and when into the concourse.

Twitter user Baggie Steve @SBraincell tweeted: “It is with great sadness that I have to report that my Brother who was taken ill during the match has sadly passed away, my son was with him and is absolutely devastated by the events that unfolded as we all are. My thanks to the Albion fan who did her best to resuscitate him.”

He added: “My heart is truly broken, my son had to watch my brother pass away and lose an Uncle, and is left with those memories, I have had to break the news to my parents and his wife. My brother loved the baggies, he was my best mate and going to a game will never be the same.”

Jimmy McCarthy @jimmymccarthy1 wrote: “Steve. We are absolutely numb with shock. Mark was like a brother to me and so proud he was part of our family (as you all are). You couldn’t meet a nicer person who loved his Albion.. Heartfelt condolences. Xx”

Roy field @Royfield1: “Hi Steve I am so sorry for your loss, was with your son while your brother was being treated, If you want any information on what went on please get in touch on Roy.field@gmx.com. God bless mate hope your son is ok.”

chels x @chelsleighjones: “Hi Steve, I was the off duty paramedic that tried to help – I’m so sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers go to you all. I think Deb has passed you my number. Feel free to contact me at any time. Again I’m so so sorry ☹️💙”

A statement from the West Midlands outfit read: West Bromwich Albion Football Club is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of a supporter following a medical emergency during Saturday’s fixture at Sheffield Wednesday.

The club has made contact with the supporter’s family to pass on its condolences and asks that they are allowed to grieve privately.

The thoughts of all of us will remain with the supporter’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.

Sheffield Wednesday said: “Sheffield Wednesday are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a West Bromwich Albion supporter during today’s game following a medical emergency.

“Our hearts go out to the supporter’s family, loved ones and the wider WBA community at this incredibly difficult time”

Tributes continued to be paid to the West Brom fan who died after a medical emergency at the Sheffield Wednesday game…

@Geordiebaggie: Please push for an inquiry into the utter abject stewarding and paramedic work or lack of…. RIP baggie boy 💔💙🤍

@WB_A_: Devastated. The whole thing was a disgrace. RIP mate

@CameronHarris07: Albion family RIP 💙

@Benhadlington1: No one should go to a game and not return! Really awful news. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Mark 💙

@Carlmcd7: Being at the game and seeing the emergency response, this was embarrassing. Paramedics walking and talking along the side line taking way too long to attend. Why didn’t the referee get alerted to stop the game? Happening way to often so why aren’t stewards and staff prepared?

@Jw95Kieran: It’s a shame this fan isn’t heading home after going to watch the team they love, even more so for their family who saw them leave this morning, not knowing this would be the last time they spoke. Life really can change in an instant. Thoughts go out to their family, RIP 🙏

@CraigyG123: Awful news, not nice knowing we could see the fans begging for help during the game but nothing really being done. Thoughts with the family & all concerned 😔

@LukeLaister: Some things are bigger than football. No one should ever go to a game and never return home to their family and friends. My thoughts and prayers go to his friends and family and to the supporters in the stand who witnessed this incident. #wba #swfc

@_Simonian: Really horrible to hear this, the slowness in which the @swfc stewards reacted to the incident was truly shocking, numerous stewards were warned & none wanted to listen until the whole away section made them aware. Thoughts go to the family #wba

@BaggieBoing: We lost today, but the fact someone lost their life is devastating, football comes a very distant second to such awful news, thoughts, prayers and condolences to the loved ones of the Albion fan, so sad #WBA #WBAFC #Wbafc #RIP #COYB
