His deal was set to automatically renew at the end of each of the next two seasons based on on-pitch results but as you can see, he didn’t even get another campaign.
The 39-year-old guided Charlton to 10 victories, four draws and 13 defeats during his time as the permanent manager.
His record during his interim spell in charge was much better with Charlton claiming nine wins from 13 games.
Jackson, who played 279 times for the club and was their assistant manager in the 2019-20 season, but could only take Charlton to 13th place in League One.
CLUB STATEMENT:
Charlton Athletic can confirm the departure of Johnnie Jackson as the club’s Manager.
Jackson was announced as Caretaker Manager in October 2021, before being appointed as the club’s permanent Manager in December 2021.
Charlton Owner and CEO, Thomas Sandgaard, said: “I would like to thank Johnnie for everything he has done for the club. He is a Charlton legend who has given his all for this club as a player, captain, coach, assistant manager and manager.
“I am grateful for all he has contributed during my time at Charlton, including stabilising us this season when he took over as manager, following our poor start to the campaign.
“This decision has been a very difficult one to make, Johnnie has done so much for the club, but I felt the time was right to make the change as we continue our preparations for next season.
“Our search for a new manager has begun. This season wasn’t the season any of us at the club wanted. I have big ambitions for Charlton and it will be important for us to find the right individual that can build on the foundations in place and help us progress on our journey.”
Jackson arrived at the club as a player on loan in February 2010, before joining permanently that summer. He played 279 games for Charlton, scoring 55 league goals and has been involved in two promotions to the Championship, as captain in 2011/12 and as Assistant Manager in 2019/20.
The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to Johnnie for everything he has done for Charlton Athletic over his 12 years at The Valley and wish him all the very best in his future career.

Twitter users reacted as the top six favourites to become new Charlton boss is revealed as their manager departs…
@BigJc022: sorry what
@jbennett1997: Had to double check this wasn’t a parody account then wtf
@matt789312: Wtf
@cafc_h: I’m devastated but not surprised. This really does show a statement of intent from Thomas really and I hope he can back this up with a solid appointment.
@daveynozza: Terrible decision. WTAF?!
@DooDooFestyles: Didn’t expect this, but he’s left now. A great servant to the club who will always receive a warm Charlton welcome. Who’s leading us to the championship next season then?
@nicobryan180: No way wtf
@CAFCmattt: Bizarre and incorrect decision. Sandgaard’s days as owner of this football club are numbered
@platty82639487: Good luck JJ in wherever you go. Disappointed it hasn’t worked out – you are club legend. 👊👊👏👏👏 Onward and upward – fingers crossed for the new recruit and hopefully a confident style of football. COYR
@nicoladowling75: Sad news. Club legend & would have been nice to see what he’d have done next season with his own signings.
@AndyLopata: Here we go. Another era of a new manager every other week and no chance to build something. The issue wasn’t the manager #cafc
@Packer_Joey: Genuinely shocked. Feel empty. Unless we are getting in a grade 1, top proven manager- I don’t get this at all.
@SmiffyCafc: Wow, was not expecting that
@DanHatton97: Oh this is gonna go down really well…
@_rhea_spxncxr_: Met him at the player of the year dinner on Sunday and he was talking about next season and his aims/goals for the club. This just seems unfair
@darrentimmsgolf: A brave and bold decision, one I personally think TS has got correct, but the next appointment will decide that. JJ still a CAFC legend, all the best for the future, I’m sure he will go onto do well as a manager 👏
@mr_moany: I was happy for Him to have the summer but TS obv starting early, need to get the right person in asap and get backing. Love JJ but formation and tactics were always the same regardless of the score and wouldn’t change it up. Too many players underperformed for Him too
@LiamForeman_: Good luck JJ. Massive club legend… one of the good guys!
@Steven_at_24: Thanks JJ you will always be a club legend.
@MantleNathan: Banter of a club
@natediazisking: What the fuck seems to be the general consensus, come out of nowhere that….
@charltonfcboy: Wait what
@mattbroadCAFC: Best of luck @johnnie_jackson Thank you for the service and you will succeed somewhere in management I’m sure
@Sophia66791355: WTF didn’t see this coming at all, Should of given him next season so can get his own players in
@addick74: It was always on the cards. We need an experienced manager who isn’t afraid to change formation when things aren’t going right. JJ will bounce back in time.
@Banksy85n: Right call, wouldn’t mind seeing Darren ferguson or Mark Warburton come in, preferably Ferguson as he knows how to get out the division
@Fire_Cafc: That takes some bollocks doing that, personally don’t think JJ was ready. Feel we need someone with more flexibility and tactical nous. Whether it’s the right move will become apparent
@ColinPep1: Was nailed on, sadly. The Morecambe game probably sealed his fate #cafc. Ferguson? Or will Sandy go for another guy who has been out of the game for many years, like Adkins.
@Jackosaysrelax: It was needed. A club legend for sure. Now make the right call. Darren ferguson or Warburton.
@chrisdsmall8: “Search for new manager starts” surely you would have a new & better manager lined up before sacking the old one? Should have been given a full season. With a full pre season & his own signings, feel last season would have been totally different. He inherited a team low on confidence
@LJ411980: Absolute joke. Pulled us out of a relegation fight, dealt with injuries to top players with a weak squad as back up. Not given a chance to see what he can do with his own squad. Hope he’s treated better elsewhere as that’s what he deserves
@jakeistead: It’s horrible to see him go but the results aren’t good enough and he made too many poor decisions. If we wanna move forward we have to realise that if he didn’t have the ties to the club he does the whole fanbase would’ve wanted this
@BigBadBraz: I’d say it’s probably the correct decision, the football has been pretty terrible at times and there’s not much room for sentiment in football. Thank you for everything though Jacko, a proper Charlton legend
