The seven players cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad with James Maddison brutally axed

We look at the seven players cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad with James Maddison brutally axed before the Iceland warm-up game.

James Maddison was the first name taken out of the team. The 27 year old was brought on as a 61st-minute substitute in Monday’s 3-0 victory in the friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park, pictured training with the group on Wednesday, and then travelled with the England squad to London ready for the second warm-up game at Wembley.

Joining him is Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah set to join him, James Trafford has also been cut from England’s squad, as expected, while Jack Grealish, Jarrad Branthwaite and Harry Maguire are also not included, the latter due to injury.

James Maddison gave his reaction on social media, saying: “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

“I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”

Harry Maguire said: I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.

Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.

For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.

Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.

Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett: “It’s a big blow to Grealish and it is unexpected. Grealish himself decided to turn up early for training as part of the Manchester City squad that was part of the FA Cup final.

“He arrived at the earliest opportunity to try to prove his fitness and show how desperate he was to be part of this squad but Southgate feels he has better options elsewhere.

“Grealish and Marcus Rashford have fewer goals and assists across the 2023/24 Premier League season than Eberechi Eze. He now looks like a strong contender for the squad.”

Sky Sports’ Sam Blitz: “With three goals and five assists in his first nine Premier League games for Tottenham, Maddison was on course for Player of the Season, let alone a spot in the England Euros squad.

“He was a shoo-in nine months ago, but now he is the first to be omitted from this extended England group.

“This is no surprise. His form has dropped off since that scintillating start for Spurs this season. The only Premier League goal contributions he made since March 10 came against Burnley and Sheffield United, while he was not given a starting role in a makeshift England line-up against Bosnia.”

This is how fans are reacting on social media at the seven players cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad with James Maddison brutally axed…

@scottystanhope: Fully think that Wharton cameo has given Southgate a serious headache. You can’t not take him now

@MKTIRB: I’m not sure how Grealish makes the squad, I’ve got GK, Toney, Dunk missing out. Maddison. Quansah, Jones now have too. Eze, Wharton, Mainoo were probably the rumours pre-squad but played themselves into it. Guehi? Maybe? Gomez or Konsa maybe? But Grealish could be cut here…

@TheEwing9: Maddison out the England squad, right call. Quansah, Jones, Trafford, Dunk, Toney to follow. Will be between Bowen & Gordon for final spot I think depends on Gordon injury #Euro2024

@ConnorNeville3: I would have taken Maddison to Germany. He’s too good not to bring him, we’ll regret this decision. I’d be fuming if I were him, now Quansah and Jones too. 4 more players to go, let’s just hope our Bowen makes the final cut.

@wardy22589: Maddison, Quansah, Jones out are right calls Trafford Dunk Grealish Toney (tough call) Next 4 to go although feel he will keep Dunk and it’s a toss coin between Gomez and Konsa

@Redrum_101: Maddison, Jones & Quansah dropped. Right 3 so far. Trafford, Toney & Gomez should be another 3.. Final 1 will be tough..

@SomePalaceGuy: With Maddison, Quansah, Jones & Trafford all expected to miss out – there does seem to be hope that our boys might make the final squad. Seems to me like Palace are about to win their first major trophy: EURO 2024 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ❤️ 💙 🦅

On who they think will be the other players cut…

@JS121198:
Trafford
Dunk
Quansah
Jones
Maddison
Bowen
Watkins

@JHarvey24_:
Trafford
Branthwaite
Wharton
Grealish

@JayGazBallLover: Trafford, Dunk, Quansah, Guehi, Jones, Maddison, Toney. It’s that easy tbf

@LewisStubbs1302:
Trafford
Guehi
Quansah
Jones
Maddison
Toney
Bowen

@NS_THFC: I think Gary will leave out;
Trafford
Quansah
Branthwaite
Jones
Maddison
Bowen
Toney

@OufcKaden:
Trafford
Dunk
Quansah
Jones
Gallagher
Toney
Maddison

@PhilHRoberts: Trafford, Dunk, Quansah, Jones, Maddison, Gordon, Toney.

@BaileyBowden3: Trafford dunk Maddison jones quansah Gordon toney are the 7 who don’t go 👍🏻

@shaunlevett: I know Quansah is young but he’s been better than Dunk and Maguire this season.

@LiamTFitzG: Trafford, Dunk, Grealish and Toney for me I think. Lack of form, exposed at international level, lack of form and lack of form.

@isthatGH: Should be Dunk, Trafford, Grealish and Toney

@jonjwood_real: Trafford, Quansah, Jones, Dunk,Bowen, Maddison and Watkins are the 7 I’d cut. It’s come too soon for 3 of them. The other 4 simply aren’t good enough for the required level.

@Jayph96: Trafford, Dunk, Grealish, Toney.

@lpatz80:
Maddison (doesn’t suit the system)
Jones (better options than him)
Quansah (too early for him probably)
Trafford (barring an injury)
Toney (will probably go as 3rd striker)
Personally I’d leave out Dunk, Gomez & Bowen in addition to the top 4 listed.

@TacticallyMatt:
Curtis Jones
Jarell Quansah
James Maddison
Ollie Watkins
James Trafford
Lewis Dunk
Jarrod Bowen
The seven I’d drop if I was Gareth Southgate.

@Joelbirmz12:
Maddison
Jones
Quansah
Trafford
Toney
Dunk
Bowen

@ThePeakSanti: Why are people acting like dropping Maddison from England squad is a crazy decision, he had few good games in the beginning of the season, got injured came back and has been average ever since.
