The league teams who have still never played at the new Wembley

We list the 6 league teams who have never played at the new Wembley and it’s fair to say some have come very close to getting there.

Out of all the 92 clubs in the top four leagues of English football, @DaleJohnsonESPN mentioned 6 teams left who have never played at the new Wembley.

Prior to the 2021/22 season’s playoffs, Nottingham Forest and Port Vale had never been to the new Wembley.

It’s worth noting that AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United have visited the new one but only in an away match against Tottenham, rather than it being a neutral venue for say a cup semi or final.

For the Cherries, their last trip to Wembley was in April 1998 against Grimsby Town in the Football League Trophy Final.

The Magpies haven’t played at Wembley in a cup or play-off since their FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea in April 2000, just prior to the old stadium’s demolition.

Oldham Athletic also haven’t ever been to the new Wembley, but since they are relegated to non league, they aren’t no longer a ‘league club’.

* = Never ever played at Wembley, old or new

ACCRINGTON STANLEY*

The closest Accrington got to Wembley was when they lost the League Two playoff semi finals in the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons.

At the time in 2011, the club’s achieved what was then their highest ever league placing when they reached 5th in League Two, beating their previous best of 15th in 2009–10.

This took them through to the League Two Play Offs for the first time, where they lost to Stevenage 3–0 on aggregate in the semi final.

Then in 2016, the club’s achieved a new highest ever league placing when they reached 4th in League Two, again got to the semi final but lost 3-2 on aggregate.

BLACKBURN ROVERS

Blackburn won the League Cup in 2001/2002 season, but at the time, Wembley was getting renovated. This was played at the Millennium Stadium.

Their last visit to the old Wembley was in 1992 for the Football League Second Division play-off final.

The former Premier League side were candidates for promotion – and a possible Wembley playoff final – at the start of the campaign.

However, their form dipped in the second half of the campaign led to them dropping out the playoff places, finishing in 8th, six points off a chance to play for a game at Wembley.

COLCHESTER UNITED

Colchester United are another one of those sides who have never been to the new Wembley Stadium.

The closest they’ve come is in 2020 when they finished the League Two season in 6th place.

The campaign officially ended on the 9th June following a vote by all League Two member clubs during the coronavirus pandemic.

Final league positions were determined on a points-per-game basis, and Colchester’s 1.57 points-per-game was enough to secure sixth position in the league and the third of four playoff spots.

In their play-off semi-final first leg with Exeter City, the U’s won 1–0 at home, but lost 3–2 on aggregate following a 3–1 extra time defeat at St James Park.

Had they got to the final anyway, fans wouldn’t have been allowed to go to the game at the new Wembley.

Colchester United have previously played at the old Wembley, a memorable Division Three play-off final victory over Torquay United.

CRAWLEY TOWN*

Crawley have reached the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy (2007/08) and area quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy (2014/15). As close as they’ve got to making it to Wembley.

Yep, the West Sussex outfit have never been to England’s national stadium, however it seems they don’t need it, going up via automatic promotion places rather than via playoffs.

Getting to a cup final at Wembley hasn’t happened either, losing a 2007–08 FA Trophy, losing to Torquay in the quarter final, and then 2014/15 saw them lose to Gillingham in the area quarter finals of the Checkatrade Trophy.

IPSWICH TOWN

The closest they have got to reaching Wembley came in the Championship playoffs, losing two semi finals (three but final of 2003/04 final at Millennium Stadium).

They also played Arsenal in a League Cup semi final but lost 3-1 on aggregate despite winning first leg 1-0.

Since being relegated form the second tier in 2019, their fans haven’t exactly had much to cheer about, finishing 11th, 9th and 11th. And in cup competitions for the last three seasons, they’ve exited in the first or second round.

HARTLEPOOL UNITED*

Hartlepool United have never played at Wembley, old and new, though they have come rather close.

Their return to League Two was confirmed with a penalty shootout win over Torquay United in June 2021 in an unforgettable National League play-off final, however it was held at Bristol City instead of Wembley due to hosting the Euros.

Hartlepool United also had fans dreaming of a first ever trip to Wembley in the 2021/22 season when the team reached the Papa John’s Trophy semi final, but lost to Rotherham United.

A quick look at those potentially coming up into the EFL – Chesterfield and Grimsby have both played a match at the new Wembley.

Solihull, who finished third in the National League for the 2021/22 season, took on Chesterfield in a playoff semi final. Win that and the final is played at West Ham’s London Stadium with Wembley again being used for England matches this summer. Solihull have never played at the new Wembley, and as far as we’re aware, haven’t played at the old one either.
